Mangaluru, Feb 15: Even as the row over collecting toll at the newly commissioned toll plaza on National Highway 66 at Talapady in Mangaluru taluk remains to be settled, a fresh row erupted on Tuesday, with the vehicle owners accusing the operators of duping them by reissuing unclaimed receipts.

tollfeesSometimes, vehicle users in a hurry to pass through the plaza move out immediately after paying the fee without collecting the receipt. Booth operators allegedly reissue such unclaimed receipts to those who demand receipt, accused vehicle owner.

On Tuesday Zainul Abideen, a resident of?Bokkapatna in Mangaluru was travelling in a car towards Kerala when he was stopped at the plaza around 1.20 pm. He paid the toll of Rs 35 and proceeded further. After travelling a distance, Abideen glanced at the ticket only to be taken aback that he was cheated. He had received a receipt for another vehicle KL 14 M 5820 that was printed at 8.37 a.m. the same day.

NHAI Project Director Z. Samson Vijay Kumar said that the aggrieved person has to lodge a complaint with the NHAI, which would verify the allegation.

The concessionaire, Navayuga Udupi Tollway Company Pvt. Ltd., has said that it would examine the matter in detail. Company manager S. Amarnath Reddy said that all receipt details of the day, CCTV footages and vehicle counts would be examined.

Bengaluru, Jun 17: The Opposition leader in the Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Wednesday strongly urged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to desist from invoking amendment to the Land Reforms Act, saying it would make buying land easier for the corporate companies and the rich.

In a hard-hitting letter to the Chief Minister, a copy of which was released to the media, the Congress leader had urged to rescind the decision from amending to the Karnataka Land Reforms Act and also Agriculture Produces Marketing Committee Act.

Asserting that the state government's move was only intending to help to the land grabbers, Siddaramaiah, also the former chief minister, said easing of restrictions to buy land to the tune of over 216 acres per individual would sound a death knell to the farm sector.

Mangaluru, May 7: The Dakshina Kannada District Muslim Okkoota has strongly condemned permit for opening of textile and footwear shops across the district at a time when the number of Covid-19 positive cases are on the rise.

In a press note here on Thursday, former Mayor and Okoota President Ashraf alleged that the permission to open the shops at a time when Eid-ul-Fitr was nearing would lead to rush in the shops in turn bringing in fear of spread of Covid-19.

He expressed his resentment over the fact that the administration has neglected the appeal made by the Okkoota as well as the Qazi of Udupi against permitting textile shops during the lockdown period.

He warned that the administration, district in-charge Minister, MLA and MP themselves will be responsible in case of increased infection cases due to this decision.

The district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary yesterday had announced that textile shops in the district can be opened from May 7.

Bengaluru, May 28: A thousand government schools in Karnataka are set to get Englishmedium sections from this academic year (2020-21). These institutions will function in both English and Kannada medium.

The decision was taken by primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar and officials of the education department at a meeting on Wednesday.

Suresh Kumar said dualmedium will help improve the standard of schools and enable their development. The poorest of the poor spend almost 40% of their income on their children’s education in private schools. With the introduction of dual-medium, the government hopes such families will be able to save their earnings, he said. These schools will impart lessons in both English and Kannada. They will also provide textbooks in both languages.

‘Kannada must for all’

The meeting reviewed implementation of the compulsory Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015. Officials from the Kannada Development Authority were present at the meeting who claimed that some private schools have failed to implement the Act properly.

“Action will be taken against such institutions. Every child studying in schools across the state must learn Kannada,” Kumar said at the meeting.
