Pak’s victory triggers tension in Kodagu, Shivamogga; saffronists thrash youth

Madikeri/Shivamogga, Jun 20: Tension prevailed for some time in remote areas of Kodagu and Shivamogga districts of Karnataka following the victory of Pakistan against India in the finals of the Champions Trophy. india

Based on a complaint of Sangh Parivar activists, the Kodagu police have arrested four persons on charge of celebrating Pakistan’s victory. Riyaz, Samad, Munir and Jabir of Elane Hosakote are the arrested. Riyaz is the son of Elane Hosakote Gram Panchayat vice president Kunhi Kutti.

According to sources, a group of saffron activists thrashed the four before handing them over to police. The saffron activists claimed that the four youths came on their scooters and in a Maruti van, burst fire crackers and raised victory slogans at seventh Hosakote Junction around 10.30 p.m.

As the news spread, hundreds of Hindutva activists assembled in front of the police station on Monday morning and urged the police to file sedition case against the accused. BJP district president B B Bharatish, Vishwa Hindu Parishat district general secretary D Narasimha and others submitted a written complaint to the PSI in this regard.

When the saffron activists attempted to stage a protest at Kannada Circle, Kushalnagar DySP Sampat Kumar and Circle Inspector Kyate Gowda spoke to the protestors and promised to register an FIR under IPC Sections 153B and 295A.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed for a while at Melinakuruvalli near Thirthahalli in Shivamogga district on Monday, after a local youth reportedly posted congratulatory message to Pakistan.

Jabi Qureshi, a resident of Melinakuruvalli, reportedly posted a message on his Facebook wall that “we are champions”.

Come on guys, just keep aside your enemity atleast in sports.. Support whichever team you like..

They should not have celebrated Pak win openly...if at their home does not matter but not openly....their soldiers are killing our innocent soldiers....

Cheering for a team of enemy country, Celebrating the victory of enemy country against our own country is not at all justified. We all Indians should be ONE against such country in any activity. There is hard feeling or soft feeling PERIOD.

Are we going to celebrate victory of Bangladesh against India??? No one does that. Then, why Pakistan???

Police stations in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi to be sanitized in a phased manner

Mangaluru, May 26: In the wake of mounting case of covid-19 in the coastal Karnataka, the police department has decided to sanitise the police stations in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

The superintendents of police in both the districts have been instructed to take necessary steps for sanitisation of stations in a phased manner, according to Devajyoti Ray, inspector-general of police (Western Range).

Meanwhile, the top cops of Uttara Kannada and Chikkamagaluru that forms part of the Western Range have been asked to take a call on doing so. “Hebri police station in Udupi was sanitised as part of this process and not because of any positive case emerging from staff there,” he said.

Allaying fears over stations being sealed down over positive case among station staff, Karnataka police chief Praveen Sood said this is a temporary measure and stations do not become non-functional.

“It is just that, for a mandated period police station will function from different premise when the station is being sanitised,” he said.

Noting that policemen are quarantined as precautionary measure, he said additional staff can be drafted from other stations or districts if need for it arises.

Karnataka: Covid-19 positive cases mounts to 651 including 304 recoveries and 26 deaths

Bengaluru, May 4: A total of 37 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in the last 24 hours in Karnataka taking the total number to 651, State Health Department said on Monday.

"Thirty seven new coronavirus positive cases have been confirmed in Karnataka from 5 pm yesterday to 5 pm today. The total number of cases in the state stands at 651," the department said.

The total number of cases includes 27 deaths and 321 persons who have been discharged. Of the remaining 302 cases, 296 patients are in isolation in designated hospitals and six patients are in ICU.

India has registered 2,553 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours and the total number of cases now stands at 44,532.

COVID-19: Udupi, Uttara Kannada districts appeal govt to allow test at Manipal’s Kasturba Hospital

Udupi, Apr 7: The district administrations of Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts have appealed to the state government to request Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to allow COVID-19 tests at Manipal’s Kasturba Hospital.

Kasturba Hospital was granted approval by the ICMR to conduct tests on samples to detect the novel coronavirus on March 24, however it rescinded it later.

Udupi district Deputy Commissioner (DC) G Jagadeesha stated that the Council did not provide any reason for the cancellation of approval; his office has requested the Chief Secretary to pressurise the Council in granting approval again.
