Bengaluru, Jun 19: The controversial encounter between Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai and Superintendent of Police Bhushan Gulabrao Borase caused a commotion in Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Monday with legislators of ruling and opposition parties engaging in a heated argument.kalldkabhat

The development comes after Mr Rai urged the SP to take stringent action against RSS veteran Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat if he tried to disrupt communal peace in Bantwal taluk. A secretly recorded video clip of Rai-SP meeting has gone viral on social media. In the video, Mr Rai has held Mr Bhat responsible for the communal clashes in the region.

Raising the issue during assembly session, former chief minister and leader of the opposition Jagadish Shettar charged Mr Rai of exerting pressure on police and demanded his immediate resignation. He also accused Mr Rai of targeting Hindu leaders.

Responding to Mr Shettar, Food and Civil Supplies Minister U T Khader strongly defended Mr Rai, stating that the latter never makes baseless allegations against anyone. He said that being the district in-charge minister of DK, Mr Rai was giving priority to maintain law and order while some elements were trying to spread hatred in the society. “Mr Rai will not bow to threats,” he added.

Joining the debate, Mulki-Moodbidri MLA Abhaychandra Jain too endorsed the remarks of Mr Khader. Mr Jain said that the intention behind Mr Rai’s advices to the top cop was to restore peace in Bantwal constituency and not to target anybody.

BJP MLAs were outrageous towards Mr Rai when he entered the Assembly. They demanded his clarification over the video, in which he had claimed that the Sangh Parivar was responsible for the murder of Karopady Gram Panchayat Vice President Abdul Jaleel. This triggered another debate between ruling and opposition parties.

Mangaluru, Jan 29: Days after some youths allegedly threatened to 'behead' local MLA and former Karnataka minister U T Khader during a pro-CAA rally here, the Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Congress on Wednesday urged the police to register a case against the culprits.

A video of the incident that went viral on social media showed the youths raising slogans that they will "cut off his limbs and chop off his head if necessary" during the rally organised by the BJP in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday.

Addressing reporters here, District Congress Committee president Harish Kumar demanded that the police register a case on their own against the youths. He said if prompt action was not taken against the youths seen in the video, the Congress will launch an agitation before the office of the Commissioner of Police.

When asked by reporters about the video, Khader had on Tuesday brushed aside the threat, saying he had not taken it seriously. The MLA had also said he did not file a complaint with police as he had concern for the families of the youths.

Bengaluru, April 3: Former prime minister HD Deve Gowda has written to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stating that he has communicated in writing to Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to make arrangements for the passing of vehicles related to medical facilities and essential goods between Mangaluru and Kasargod.

"What made me write this letter is the pain and anguish I experienced when BM Farookhji, the national working president of JDS and K Krishnan Kutty, MLA and a member of your Cabinet and member of JDS, a coalition partner of your government brought to my notice the inhuman and inappropriate action on part of the authorities of Karnataka to block the interstate highway between Mangaluru and Kasargod, bringing the traffic movements between the two states and particularly to Kasargod district having a sizeable population of Kannadigas to a grinding halt," Gowda wrote in the letter.

"I immediately wrote a letter to Yeddiyurappaji, the Chief Minister of Karnataka to make arrangements to permit goods movement and the passage of ambulances and other vehicles for any emergency. But authorities of Karnataka government appears to be very adamant despite the assurance given before the High Court," it added.

Gowda said that the situation is very grim since he learnt that four to five patients died for want of medical facilities since the ambulances ferrying the patients were denied permission to cross the border, to avail treatment from the hospitals at Mangaluru.

He also condemned the Karnataka government for denying access to medical facilities to people in Kerala.

"I very strongly condemn the attitude of the BJP government in Karnataka denying access to people from Kerala to avail medical facilities on emergency and also the movement of essential goods for the survival of the people and deprivation of such emergency services amounts to violation of human rights and opposed to all norms of humanity and humanitarian considerations," the letter read.
Gowda said he will take up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"I take this opportunity to assure you that I will take up this issue with the Prime Minister who had assured while imposing 21 days of lockdown that the supply of essential commodities will be maintained and hospital facilities will be kept open round the clock so as to prevent any untoward incident," he stated.

Bengaluru, May 30: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has announced that on May 31 (Sunday) there will not be a total lockdown and all activities will be permitted and continue like the rest of the week.

The decision was taken in view of demands from citizens and “keeping their interests in mind,” said a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

This means that public transport services - buses, autos and cabs - shops, commercial establishments and others will be open on May 31.

Under a Lockdown 4.0, Karnataka had decided to throw open public transport, except metro, shops and commercial establishments, except Metro, on all six days between 7 am and 7 pm. However, May 24 and May 31 - Sundays - were exempted from the relaxation and a curfew was to be imposed throughout the day.

The Lockdown 4.0 ends May 31 and the government's decision to keep Sunday free comes ahead of the Lockdown 5.0 that the Centre is expected to announce soon.
