Bengaluru, Aug 2: In a major setback to the Congress party in Karnataka, which is hosting 42 party MLAs from Gujarat, ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls onAugust 8, the IT department on Wednesday conducted simultaneous raids on energy minister D K Shiva Kumar's residences and at the resort where the legislators have been put up.

The raids commenced at 7 am and are still continuing with the IT officials raiding at Kumar's residence in upmarket Sadashivanagar in Bengaluru, his MP brother D K Suresh's house and in their constituency Kanakapura. The team is also at Eagleton resort where the 42 MLAs have been put up from July 27 onwards against poaching from the BJP.

Kumar and his brother were in complete charge of hosting the MLAs. The former returned from New Delhi late on Tuesdaynight and was at the resort at the time of the raid.

Meanwhile a press statement from DGIT (Inv), Bengaluru without naming the minister said the Karnataka Investigation Wing of the Income tax department said the search was under Section 132 of the Income Tax Act and is an evidence gathering exercise which is being carried in compliance with all statutory requirements. The search is the continuation of an investigation which has been in progress for a considerable period of time.

Besides, the timing of the search was decided well in advance. The events involving certain MLAs of another state being brought to Karnataka were unforeseen and unpredictable events.

"The Minister being searched was staying at the resort near Bengaluru where some MLAs from another state are put up. Hence the Minister's room alone is being searched," the statement said.

The statement said the search team has no concern with the MLAs and there has been no contact between the MLAs and the search team. "It is again reiterated that the Income Tax search is only on one Karnataka minister," it added.

No searches on resort: I-T department

According to a release issued by the I-T department, the raids on Shivakumar's residence and at Eagleton resort were only related to the energy minister only.

"The search team has no concern with the MLAs and there has been no contact with MLAs and the search team. It is again reiterated that the Income Tax search is only on one Karnataka Minister," reads the release.

The department has said the raids were an "evidence gathering exercise" and is a continuation of an investigation against the minister.

While Congress leaders allege that the raids are a handiwork of the BJP-led central government to "influence" the Rajya Sabha elections, the I-T department has said that the search was decided well in advance.

"The search is the continuation of an investigation which has been in progress for a considerable period of time. The timing of the search was decided well in advance. The events involving certain MLAs of another state being brought to Karnataka were unforeseen and unpredictable events," states the I-T department.

Bengaluru, Jul 16: Rattled by the spurt in Covid-19 positive cases, a Karnataka minister on Wednesday said only god would save the people from coronavirus pandemic.

"Only god has to save us from the virus or the people should be made aware of the infection so that they wear mask and maintain social distancing," state Health Minister B Sriramulu told reporters in Chitradurga, 205-km northwest of Bengaluru.

Noting that the infection does not differentiate between rich and poor, police, doctors, politicians or legislators, Sriramulu said the communicable disease could rise to alarming level in the ensuing two months, as the cases were rising daily the world over.

"Who can control coronavirus? In the present situation, only god has to save us. Otherwise, the people should become aware of its (virus) consequences. If we have made mistakes, we are ready to face punishment for them," said Sriramulu, who is the ruling BJP's legislator from the Molakalmuru reserved assembly segment in the district.

Refuting the opposition Congress charge that the cases were rising in the state due to negligence by ministers, officials and legislators, Sriramulu said Karnataka was performing better than other states till the cases began to steadily rise since unlock started and the people were moving in violation of the guidelines.

A record 3,176 cases were reported from across the southern state during the day, taking the Covid tally to a whopping 47,253, including 27,853 active cases after 18,466 were discharged, with 1,076 during the day, while 928 succumbed to the virus, with 87 in the last 24 hours.

In Bengaluru, which is under 9-day lockdown since Tuesday night till July 22 morning, 1,975 positive cases were registered, taking its tally to 22,944, including 17,051 active after 5,455 were discharged so far, with 463 during the day, while 437 died of the infection, with 60 in the last 24 hours.

Belagavi, Mar 16: Despite issuing an order banning large gathering, including lavish weddings, Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa attended the grand marriage celebrations of the daughter of BJP MLC Mahantesh Kavatagimath in Belagavi on Sunday.

The Chief Minister had advised people to postpone weddings till the COVID-19 scare passed off, or to restrict the number of guests to around 100. But the wedding on the lawns of Shagun gardens in the Udyambag industrial area in Belagavi had many more times the number of visitors.

A police officer on duty at the venue estimated the crowd to be over 3,000.

The large gathering was in clear defiance of the government order and the Chief Minister’s appeal. But Mr. Yediyurappa’s presence seems to have vindicated this act.

Hundreds of cars were parked on both sides of the Khanapur road, outside the venue which was decorated with flowers, buntings, rolls of paper and colourful cloth. Two huge banners about preventing the spread of COVID-19 have been put up at the venue. There are wash basins at two ends and several hand sanitiser counters across the ground.

Apart from Union Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi, and ministers Srimanth Patil and MLA Mahesh Kumthalli, there were several leaders from the BJP, the Congress and the JD(S) who attended the marriage. There were some officers from the city corporation and district administration among the guests.

The Chief Minister arrived around 11 a.m. and stayed for nearly an hour at the venue. He left after wishing the couple and greeting some leaders.

On his arrival, at the Sambra airport, Mr. Yediyurappa said the State was well-equipped to handle the spread of the infection. “Over one lakh have been tested. Among the 100 suspected cases, the virus was detected only in six persons. One person has died. But otherwise the situation is under control. Officers are working round the clock,’’ he said.
