Guwahati, Aug 2: Miscreants shot dead president of All Bodoland Territorial Council Muslim Student's Union Lafiqul Islam Ahmed at Kokrajhar town in broad daylight on Tuesday. The ethnically volatile Bodo heartland witnessed spontaneous protests across the minority-dominated pockets of the state, within hours the incident.

Eyewitnesses said that the student leader was sitting at his shop at Titaguri market at Kokrajhar when two motorcycle-borne gunmen shot him dead from a close range.

As protestors set up blockades on national highways at several places in four Bodo-dominated districts, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal convened an emergency security meeting and asked the police to launch a manhunt to nab the culprit.

CM Sonowal, while condemning the dastardly act, called upon the people at large to maintain peace and harmony and stay away from the rumour mongers for the benefit of all sections of the people in the state.

Lafikul was scheduled to address a public rally at neighbouring Chirang district convened to address the problems of the state's minority community.

A source said that Lafikul has been vocal against the illegal trading of cows to Bangladesh across the international border close to Dhubri-Kokrajhar districts.

The incident occurred when the state is on high alert due to Independence Day and specially on the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in the state for a day-long review of the flood situation.

Police said that they were examining all angles to ascertain the identity of the killers.

Kokrajhar has a history of several ethnic clashes between Bengali-speaking Muslim and Bodo militants as well as between Bodos and Adivasis in the past, the worst being in 2012.

Assam CM asked Assam police director general Mukesh Sahay to rush to Kokrajhar to review the situation and initiate an inquiry to nab the culprit within 24 hours. He also asked Kokrajhar deputy commissioner to keep a vigil on the situation and maintain peace and order in the district. CM Sonowal also asked special DGP Kula Saika to rush to Udalguri and assess the situation.

Rajghat, Feb 23: The maternal uncle of Dr Kafeel Khan, who was recently arrested for allegedly making inflammatory statements during anti-CAA protests, was shot dead in front of his house at Bankatichak in Rajghat area, police said on Sunday.

Dr Nusratullah Warsi aka Dada (55), a property dealer, was shot dead on Saturday night at about 10:45 pm and an FIR against two people was filed in this connection on a written complaint of his family members.

According to police, it appears to be a case of murder due to monetary and property dispute and they are searching for both the accused.

Dr Kafeel Khan, suspended doctor of Gorakhpur BRD Medical College, was last month arrested under charges of giving a provocative speech during a protest against the CAA and NRC at Aligarh Muslim University and was later charged with the National Security Act.

Warsi on Saturday evening had gone to his lawyer Siraj Tariq's house, a few metres away from his own house, and was returning home on foot when a man shot him in his head, killing him on the spot.

"On the written complaint of family members, case of murder against one Imammuddin and Anil Sonkar has been registered and police has initiated probe and is searching for both the accused. Police met the women in their house and is interrogating them," Circle Officer VP Singh said.

Prima facie it appears to be a case of property and money dispute, he said, adding, three teams have been constituted to investigate the case and soon the accused will be caught.

Dr Kafeel Khan had last month raised apprehension in a Mumbai court about being killed in an "encounter" by the Uttar Pradesh police after claiming that he had been "falsely" implicated in the case by them.

The paediatrician had come to the limelight in 2017 when a controversy broke out after the death of over 60 children in less than a week at the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, where he was posted.

Pune, Jul 4: Now that wearing mask in public places has become the new normal, a resident of Pimpri-Chinchwad of Pune district, Shankar Kurade has got himself a mask made of gold worth Rs 2.89 lakhs amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It's a thin mask with minute holes so that there is no difficulty in breathing. I am not sure whether this mask will be effective," said Kurade.

Kurade loves wearing gold ornaments and his hands and neck are loaded with jewellery.

This unique idea struck him soon after he saw a man wearing a silver mask on social media.

"I saw a video on social media of a man in Kolhapur wearing a silver mask and then an idea struck me to have a mask of gold. I talked to a goldsmith and he gave me this five and a half pound gold mask in a week," said Kurade.

"All my family members love gold, if they too demand it, then I will get it designed for them too. I do not know if I will be infected with coronavirus wearing a gold mask or not, but following all the rules of the government can prevent the spread of virus," he added.

Since childhood, Shankar is very fond of gold ornaments, that is the reason he wears gold rings in all the fingers, gold bracelets on his wrist and huge gold chains around his neck.

May 9: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said the West Bengal government is not allowing trains with migrant workers to reach the state that may further create hardship for the labourers.

In a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Shah said not allowing trains to reach West Bengal is "injustice" to the migrant workers from the state.

Referring to the 'Shramik Special' trains being run by the central government to facilitate transport of migrant workers from different parts of the country to various destinations, the home minister said in the letter that the Centre has facilitated more than two lakh migrants workers to reach home.

Shah said migrant workers from West Bengal are also eager to reach home and the central government is also facilitating the train services.

"But we are not getting expected support from the West Bengal. The state government of West Bengal is not allowing the trains reaching to West Bengal. This is injustice with West Bengal migrant labourers. This will create further hardship for them," Shah wrote.
