Former hockey player from Kodagu stabbed to death by wife

Madikeri, Aug 21: A former hockey player from Kodagu was allegedly stabbed to death by his wife over some dispute in Malad suburb located in the northern part of Mumbai.

52-year-old Chenanda Naveen Appaiah and his wife Amita had an argument over some issue at around 1 pm yesterday. The dispute escalated into a fight and during the scuffle, Amita stabbed her husband, said a police official.

"Even though the motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, the dispute appears to be the immediate reason behind the killing," a senior police official attached to Malad police station said. Amita is yet to be arrested as she too has sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment at the hospital, said police.

Meanwhile, a television actress, who stays on the 26th floor of the same building, said, "My domestic help heard a scream at around 1:15 pm and found Amita lying near her door and writhing in pain. "He then went down and informed the security guards about the incident, but they refused any help and instead asked the domestic help to call police helpline number."

Appaiah, who had moved to Mumbai years ago was a close friend of former Indian hockey captain Dhanraj Pillai.

Jun 19: BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray should sign an agreement with neighbouring Karnataka to avoid a repeat of flood in part of the state like it happened in August last year.

In August 2019, Kolhapur, Sangli districts and some other parts of the state faced unprecedented floods triggered by huge release of water from dams in western Maharashtra and from the Almatti dam in Karnataka.

Fadnavis said, The Maharashtra chief minister should hold an urgent meeting with the Karnataka chief minister and enter into an agreement over-discharge of water from the Almatti dam located on the border of both the states."

If water is not released from the Almatti dam in time, it will cause flooding in border areas of Maharashtra such as Kolhapur and Sangli.

"A pact between the two states would benefit both as it would help in keeping water levels in control, the former chief minister said.

The dams in the state already have sizeable water stock. It would be better if the chief minster schedules a meeting with the Karnataka chief minister regarding the same (agreement), the Leader of Opposition in the assembly said.

Ballari, Apr 18: Hosapete town in Ballari district of Karnataka gasped in disbelief as it turned out that 11 members of one single family are positive for the coronavirus.

The whole town has been declared a containment zone and is being surveilled 24X7.

The family includes seven members whose tests returned positive today, three who tested Covid-19 positive on March 30 and one other member subsequently.

The seven who tested positive today had been negative when they were earlier tested along with the others.

They have all now been shifted to isolation wards at the District Hospital in Ballari.

Including this family of 11, Ballari has 13 positive cases so far, with one case each reported from Ballari and Siraguppa towns.

Startled by this sudden upsurge from Hosapete, the district administration has set up 16 fever clinics to screen people and six COVID care centres to treat positive cases. There are two dedicated COVID hospitals, one at Ballari and another at Torangallu in Sandur.

A team of psychological counsellors have been put on duty to provide support to the patients at the isolation centres.

Mangaluru, Apr 10: Eight people were arrested on Friday on charges of illegally arriving at Addur near the city through boat violating the lockdown.
 
Police said that Yakub and other seven in his group have been charged with criminal cases for entering the city illegally as the border between Kerala and Karnataka has been sealed and a ban on travel between the States is in effect.
 
The group had arrived through boat despite there was ban. Police are now investigating the existence of a gang who are illegally transporting people through the sea across State borders.
