3 cops suspended for ‘royal treatment’ for accused in Bhaskar Shetty murder case

Udupi, Aug 22: The Udupi district police on Monday suspended three police personnel for alleged dereliction of duty in bringing the three accused in the Bhaskar Shetty murder case in an air-conditioned Multi Utility Vehicle (MUV) from the prison in Mangaluru to the Court Complex here in Udupi.

The three accused — Rajeshwari Shetty, Navneet Shetty and Niranjan Bhat — were being brought from the prison in Mangaluru to be produced in court here for hearing in the case on Monday.

Sanjeev M. Patil, Superintendent of Police, said that the three police personnel, Sudhakar, Assistant Reserve Police, Sub-Inspector, Renuka, woman police constable, and Salman Khan, civil police constable, have been suspended based on a preliminary enquiry by the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Udupi Sub Division.

They have been suspended pending detailed departmental enquiry, he said.

The visuals of them being brought in the air-conditioned MUV were telecast on some Kannada news channels.

Bhaskar Shetty, a NRI businessman, went missing from his house here on July 28, 2016, and his mother Gulabi Shetty lodged a missing complaint at the Manipal police station on July 29, 2016. The police arrested his wife Rajeshwari Shetty and their son Navneet Shetty on the charge of murdering him.

Ujire, May 7: A child was killed and four people were injured after a car they were travelling in rammed a stationary truck near Ujire, on Tuesday night.

The deceased is nine-month-old Madhavi, the daughter of Pramod, a resident of Panyalu Ujire.

Pramod, his wife Ashwini and relatives Mamatha and Swati, have been grievously injured in the incident, and are being treated in a private hospital.

The incident took place around 11pm. According to police, the victims had gone to a relative’s house at Vamadapadavu. On reaching Ujire, Pramod wanted to stop the car beside the road, but failed to notice the stationary truck.

The car was completely mangled as a result of the impact. A case has been registered at the Dharmasthala police station in this regard.

Belagavi, Feb 25: Left Parties will launch countrywide door-to-door campaign from March 1 to 23 against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Population Register (NPR), National Register of Citizens (NRC), Communist Party of India (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference here, he said that CPI (M) and other Left parties were participating in the awareness programme that will conclude on March 23, on the martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekar and Rajguru.

"Till now 13 states have expressed their opposition for NRC and will not implement it, which means more than fifty per cent of country will not have it," he added.

Mangaluru, Apr 22: Iftar parties, Taraweeh and weekly Friday prayers in mosques have been banned in the district during Ramadan amid Coronavirus theat, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said here on Wednesday.

In a release issued here, she said, “As per the guidelines issued by the State government and Wakf Board, arranging Iftar gathering, and offering Taraveeh Namaz and Friday Namaz at mosques or dargas during the month of Ramadan has been prohibited as a precaution measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Therefore, offer prayers at homes instead of going to mosques," the DC said.

“No one can perform Namaz in the mosques except the muezzin and the Pesh imam and the staff of the mosque. Also, gathering neighbors and offering collective prayers at anybody's home is also not allowed. Masjid administration committees must follow the directives of the government, Wakf Board and the District Administration”, the DC urged.
