Bengaluru, Sept 12: The Karnataka BJP Yuva Morcha on Monday sent a legal notice to renowned historian Ramachandra Guha for alleging that its ideological mentor, the RSS, and the party had a role in the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh.

In the legal notice, the Yuva Morcha demanded Guha issue an unconditional apology in the next three days, and also refrain from making such comments. Failure to comply with the aforesaid instructions will ensue the initiation of a civil and criminal prosecution against him, the notice stated.

"If Ramachandra Guha does not apologise, our party will initiate a legal process and take this to the court. Not just Guha, we are observing everyone who makes such comments, and notices will be issued to them, too," said Karnataka BJP spokesperson Ashwath Narayana.

After the murder of Lankesh, Guha had claimed that the RSS was behind the recent killings of activists and journalists and blamed the BJP government for sowing the seeds of intolerance in the country.

"It was likely that Gauri's murderers came from the same Sangh Parivar from which the murderers of Pansare, Dabholkar and Kalburgi came... The ruling dispensation in Delhi has created a climate of hate and intolerance," Guha had said.

Karunakar Khasale, state secretary of BJP Yuva Morcha in Karnataka, said Guha's allegations were baseless and sought to undermine the organisation which he represents.

Reacting to the BJP-issued notice, Guha took to Twitter and said, "Atal Bihari Vajpayee said the answer to a book or article can only be another book or article. But we no longer live in Vajpayee's India."

In another tweet, the eminent writer said, "In India today, independent writers and journalists are harassed, persecuted, and even killed. But we shall not be silenced."

An ardent critic of the BJP-led NDA coaliton, Ramachandra Guha has often been at loggerheads with the saffron party. Earlier, Guha had alleged he was receiving threats from the ruling party for criticising the Modi government and the RSS.

Gauri Lankesh, known for her strong views against right wing Hindutva politics, was gunned down by unidentified assailants outside her residence in Bengaluru on Septmber 5. The Karnataka government has formed a Special Investigation Team to probe the coldblooded killing that has caused national outrage and protests.

The threat comes in the wake of the Deputy Commissioner’s warning against attack on cattle traders by anti-social elements ahead of Eid al-Adha.

It is learnt that a discussion was held about DC’s warning in a pro-Hindutva WhatsApp group. The death threat was issued in the same group in Tulu language.

A police officer said that if the deputy commissioner doesn’t lodge a complaint, the police will file a suo motu case in this regard.

Bengaluru, Feb 12: Hinting at the possibility of a consolidation of ex-Janata Parivar leaders, JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda said Tuesday his party was open to talk to any former Janata leaders, who are at present either in various factions of the Janata Dal or in Congress and BJP. The veteran leader also appreciated Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP's way of work.

At the party's National Executive Committee meeting held here, Gowda said that some ex-Janata Parivar leaders had reached out to him in this regard. His comments come at a time when JD(U) leader Mahima Patel recently rekindled the debate of a unified Janata Parivar.

However, Deve Gowda was clear that he was not interested in pursuing anyone who was happy with the party they were in. "It's a waste of time to pursue someone who has seen success within their party. I am not going to do that. I am willing to persuade only those who are not holding any office at present," he said. He added that he had already asked party leaders in Kerala to take the initiative and figure out ways to bring leaders together. As for other places, it would take him some time to reach out people, he added.

The party, which organised the National Executive Meet here on February 10 and 11, spoke of strategies to rejuvenate the party from the grassroots level. The party is also conducting a membership drive.

'Much to learn from AAP'

There is much to learn from Aam Aadmi Party, which registered a victory in Delhi elections on Tuesday, said Devegowda. "Kejriwal has showed that caste does not matter. There is lesson to be learnt from the work done by AAP," he said. Later in the day, Deve Gowda also wrote a letter to Arvind Kejriwal, congratulating him on his victory.

On the occasion, the party also came up with resolutions to urge the central government to release pending amount of GST it owed to state governments apart from focusing on development of labour, industries and agriculture; to demand the centre to rollback decision on CAA, NRC and NPR and to urge the centre to pass the women's reservation bill.

At the JD(S) National Executive Meet, even as news poured in about the victory of Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi elections, the JD(S) leaders celebrated Arvind Kejriwal's victory. Seeing it as an optimistic sign for regional parties across the country, the leaders distributed sweets to mark the hat trick win of Kejriwal.
