Residential school student dies, parents suspect foul play

Davangere, Sept 18: A Class 7 student of Morarji Desai residential school in Kariganur near Basavapatna in the district died at McGann Hospital in Shivamogga on Sunday.

However, her parents have lodged a complaint with the police, raising doubts over the cause of the her death.

The deceased has been identified as Aishwarya. According to the complaint lodged by the girl’s father Rangappa, he got a call from the school on September 12, that his daughter was ill.

“I went to the school on September 13 and found that Aishwarya’s leg was swollen. We shifted her to the district hospital in Davanagere and then to McGann Hospital in Shivamogga. She died on Sunday.

“There are suspicions about the cause of her death,” the complaint said.

Dr Bhimashankar Guled, Superintendent of Police, Davangere, told DH that the exact cause of the girl’s death would be known after receiving the post-mortem report.

Deputy director of Social Welfare department Kumara Hanumanthappa said that Aishwarya had injured her leg after she fell down on the school premises on September 10.

Mumbai, Apr 15: A 35-year-old man, who worked as a priest in suburban Kandivali, allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday afternoon, hours after learning that lockdown to contain coronavirus has been extended.

The deceased was identified as Krishna Pujari, native of Udupi in Karnataka, who was attached to Durga Mata temple in Iraniwadi area of Sanjay Nagar.

Pujari, who lived with three other priests, was waiting for the lockdown to end as he wanted to go back to his hometown, a police official said.

When he learnt that the lockdown has been extended till May 3, he was terribly depressed and allegedly hanged himself in kitchen, the official added.

No suicide note has been found, he said.

Bengaluru, Apr 11: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar on Saturday lodged a complaint with Director General and Inspector General of Police Praveen Sood seeking action against four BJP leaders for their alleged communal statements.

In his petition, Mr Shivakumar cited remarks made by BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje, former union minister Anant kumar Hegde, MP Renukacharya and MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal were ''vituperative statements'' which were offences under Section 153A of the IPC.

The Congress leader alleged that the four leaders ''joined in a criminal conspiracy to create enmity between Hindus and the minority community.''

Mangaluru, May 24: A youth committed suicide by jumping into River Netravati from the old bridge at Panemangaluru on the outskirts of the city. 

The deceased has been identified as Nishant, son of Chandrahasa Moolya, a resident of Kolakeeru, near Kalladka in Bantwal taluk. 

When Nishant jumped to river, a few Muslim youths - identified as Shameer Goodinabali, Mohammad, Tauseef, Mukhtar, Zahid and Arif - also jumped to river in an apparent bid to rescue him. 

Though they managed to take an unconscious Nishant out of the water, he breathed his last without responding to any treatment. Jurisdictional Bantwal town police visited the spot later.

Meanwhile, a few locals captured the video of Muslim youths' attempt to rescue a Hindu youth on Eid al-Fitr amidst covid-19 lockdown. The video went viral within hours. 

Social media platforms including WhatsApp and Facebook flooded with messages appreciating the courage of Muslim men, who endangered their lives to save a Hindu youth on Eid day.
