The Hajj operations from Mangaluru and a few other Indian airports are likely to be stopped, at least temporarily, as a fresh Hajj Policy drafted by a ministry of minority affairs committee has explicitly recommended reducing the embarkation points for the pilgrimage from 21 to nine.

The five-member panel appointed by the by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union government to draft a new policy for the Hajj pilgrimage between 2018 and 2022 has pointed out that reducing the embarkation points will bring down the cost of pilgrimage to a large extent.

“The cost of travelling from smaller airport is double the cost of travelling from major airports. That’s why we have recommended limiting the embarking points to major airports in the country," said Shafi Parkar, a former judge of Bombay HC and a committee member. The nine embarkation points recommended are Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Begaluru and Cochin.

Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has already confirmed that the 2018 Hajj pilgrimage will be in line with the new Haj policy, which according to him, has been drafted in light of a 2012 Supreme Court order asking the Centre to abolish the Hajj subsidy gradually by 2022.

The Hajj flight operations had commenced at the Mangaluru Airport in 2009, nearly three years after it started handling international flights and three years before it secured the international airport tag. It was a dream come true for many Muslims of coastal Karnataka and neighbouring districts. Until then, Hajj pilgrims from coastal and northern regions of the state had to fly to Saudi Arabia from Bangaluru, Kozikode or Hyderabad.

For the past nine seasons, Mangaluru International Airport had been embarkation point for the Hajj pilgrims from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and Hassan districts of Karnataka. The local Hajj committee had been providing all the necessary support to the airport authorities to ensure smooth hajj flight operations.

The demand for the direct Hajj flight from the coastal city was first raised during a Hajj camp in Mangaluru in 2007. The very next year a delegation of 32 Muslim leaders from coastal Karnataka comprising of Congress leader U T Khader, Udupi Khazi Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal, Yenepoya University chancellor Y Abdulla Kunhi and others had called on then Union Minister for External Affairs S M Krishna, his deputy Shashi Tharoor, Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and others in New Delhi and convinced them to take necessary step for the commencement of the Hajj flights from Mangaluru in 2009.

Hajj Bhavan

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had promised that a state-of-the-art Hajj Bhavan would come up in Mangaluru in Mangaluru before the 2018 Hajj season. The state government has also identified a land for the construction of the building near the airport at Kenjar village. However, if the Mangaluru Airport stops operating Hajj flights, the Hajj Bhavan project will lose its significance.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: Several ministers staying at the Bengaluru resort had been emotionally pressurised to leave the Congress party, said Congress leader Jitu Patwari on Thursday after he was rescued by party leader DK Shivakumar from getting arrested due to the scuffle that had broken out at Embassy Boulevard here.

"We had received information that one of the MLAs, Manoj Chaudhary, staying at the Boulevard wanted his father to bring him back home," Patwari told reporters.

He said, "We had accompanied Manoj's father to the resort but the moment we entered the restaurant at the resort, some miscreants took away Manoj to some other unknown place," Patwari told reporters.

"Meanwhile, we (Lakhan Singh and Jitu Patwari) were manhandled and taken to the police station," he added.

Patwari said that the police had started the process of arresting them but Shivakumar came to their rescue and stopped their arrest.

He further said, "The police manhandled us even though we tried to talk to them in a very calm manner."

"If the MLAs giving resignation was their decision then why is the BJP not allowing them to contact their families," the MP said.

He further said that Jyotiraditya Scindia would soon become a minister but "why are the other ministers being made scapegoats."

Earlier in the day, a Congress leader in Madhya Pradesh had said that if action on the assaulters of its two leaders is not taken then the matter will be taken to the court.

The Karnataka BJP, which faced action on Twitter earlier this month over incendiary tweets, this time has passed the blame of Sangh Parivar sponsored Delhi violence to the victims.

In an insensitive tweet on Friday, it dubbed the protests against the notorious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as "fake" and added that the violence that followed was "the most well-planned assault on the Idea of India," in an apparent attempt to portray the victims as villains.

The handle, notorious for tweets targeting Muslims, blamed the clashes that erupted in Delhi between people demonstrating for and against the CAA on "so called 'Peacefuls'" - a known right-wing slur for Muslims.

Many people on social media called out the tweet for misleading people and covering up the role of Delhi BJP leader Kapil Mishra's provocative speech for triggering the violence or the failure of the Delhi Police, which reports to the former BJP chief and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in controlling the riots.

Earlier this month, the Karnataka BJP had tweeted a video of Muslim women standing in queue to vote in the Delhi elections, showing their voter ID cards, with the snarky caption: "Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during NPR (National Population Register) exercise."

Soon after, the party unit's Twitter handle was blocked by the social media platform for 24 hours after many accused it of encouraging Islamophobia.

NPR has been widely criticised by opposition parties as a precursor to the government's planned NRC or National Register of Citizens which intends to make Indians prove their citizenship with documents that many poor or illiterate do not possess.

Many fear that combined with the already imposed CAA - which promises citizenship to only non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh - the NRC can be used to make millions of Muslims stateless.

The government has denied the allegation and said the CAA only intends to help those who have faced religious persecution. In recent weeks, it has gone back on its rhetoric on the NRC which was announced by Amit Shah in parliament as "it will certainly happen".

The CAA, which was cleared by parliament in December, has triggered deadly protests in the country which left at least 25 dead till Sunday. Since then, at least 42 more people have been killed as large-scale violence erupted in northeast Delhi and hundreds of homes and shops have been burned to the ground.
