Gorakhpur (UP), Oct 16: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today stressed on freeing the state from the "politics of caste and appeasement" claiming it had been rampant during the last 15 years.

"To make Uttar Pradesh strong, it is essential that we end the kind of politics being practiced here during the past 15 years," he said.

Adityanath said the focus of his government is on farmers, women, villages and people who were not part of the mainstream, he said.

"India can become able and powerful only when UP becomes able and powerful, and for this we need to end the politics of caste and appeasement which has been in practice for the last 15-20 years," Adityanath, who arrived here on a two-day visit, said.

The chief minister was speaking at the 'bhumi pujan' ceremony of a GAIL gas terminal and a unit of the Hindustan Fertiliser Corporation Limited here.

The chief minister mentioned a number of works being undertaken by his government for the development of the state's Purvanchal region.

"We purchased 37 lakh metric tonnes of wheat from farmers whereas the previous government was not able to purchase even 30 lakh metric tonnes in five years...A new sugar mill will be inaugurated in Gorakhpur which will also have a distillery and power generation unit. It will increase employment in the area," he said.

Asking people concerned to send a proposal for setting up a central school as the one functioning earlier had been closed down, he said development is the way for everyone to move forward.

The chief minister is likely to come here again on October 19 to spend Diwali with the Vantangiyas, a community of forest dwellers.

The Vantangiya community comprises people who were brought from Mayanmar to plant trees for afforestation during the colonial rule.

The community faces problems related to the use of natural forest produce like fruits, honey, wax, wood and leaves to meet their daily needs as the forests inhabited by them are not considered as revenue villages.

Conversion of tribal-dominated forest villages to revenue villages under the provisions of the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act will enable the administration to adopt development measures such as setting up of schools, dispensaries, and other such facilities in these villages.

Officials said the chief minister, who had raised issues concerning Vantangiyas in the Parliament as an MP, will accord revenue village status to 23 hamlets.

New Delhi, Jul 29: Coronavirus infections in India continue to mount as the country's total case tally crossed the 15-lakh mark.

India added 48,513 fresh cases in 24 hours, taking the total tally to over 15.3 lakh, according to the Health Ministry’s 8 a.m. update on July 29.

Key Figures

Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 15,31,669
Active cases: 5,09,447
Cured/discharged/migrated: 9,88,029
Deaths: 34,193
Number of fresh cases in 24 hours: 48,513
One-day recoveries: 35,175
One-day deaths: 768
India’s coronavirus epidemic is growing at the fastest pace in the world, increasing 20% over the last week, according to Bloomberg’s Coronavirus Tracker. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are among the states where the maximum number of daily cares are being reported.

Fresh cases continued to come in at a heightened pace, hovering just below 50,000 for the last six days.

Moderna Inc.’s vaccine candidate against Covid-19 protected against the virus in a trial that inoculated 16 monkeys, an encouraging step on the path to a defense for humans against the pandemic. Pfizer Inc., however, is preparing for the novel coronavirus to endure, leading to long-term demand for a seasonal shot to protect against Covid-19.

“There is a likely scenario that either the vaccine’s immunity will not be lasting forever,” said Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla in an interview Tuesday, “or that the virus will mutate, or that the virus will find ways to come back again and again.”

Even as the transmission rate of Covid-19 remains high in India, the pace of recovery has risen too. On Wednesday, India reported its third day of over 35,000 recoveries.

Global Update

Flare-ups in virus cases from Hong Kong to Europe are proving difficult for policy makers to wrangle. The U.S. neared 150,000 deaths from Covid-19, even as daily infections slowed in some hard-hit states. China reported 101 new cases, up from 68 a day earlier, with 98 of the total from local infections, mostly in Xinjiang.

Philippine health authorities warned that hospitals and infirmaries risk getting overwhelmed.

Globally, confirmed Covid-19 cases have topped 16.6 million with over 658,000 dead.

Washington, Jul 1: The United States has approved four coronavirus vaccine candidates for clinical trials, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) head Stephen Hahn told reporters.

"Four vaccines have been approved for moving into clinical trials... and another six are in the pipeline for us to review," Hahn said during a press briefing on Tuesday.

The US Administration launched in May Operation Warp Speed, a joint project of Health and Defense Departments, which aims to deliver 300 million doses of a vaccine for COVID-19 by January 2021.

The country's top pandemics expert Anthony Fauci warned on Tuesday, however, that there is no certainty the United States will be able to develop a vaccine against COVID-19 that works and will be safe.

Data on vaccine effectiveness, he added, may be available in the winter or early next year.
