Mangaluru, Nov 4: Young girls and women should learn martial arts such as Karate which would not only protect them from stalkers but also make them self-confident, said Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

He was speaking after inaugurating a two-day Indian Karate Championship 2017 organised by Self Defence School of Indian Karate Mangalore Dojo here on Saturday.

Though he does not know much about Karate, he is aware that martial arts empower people, particularly women, against intruders and hence, it is a must for women.

Therefore, every school should promote Karate, particularly among girls, to make them self-confident. “I know Kavita Sanil [Mayor of Mangaluru] is a Karate Champion and wish every girl to become like her while facing difficult situations,” the Chief Minister said.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said that since one month, the Mayor was asking him personally as well as through Minister B. Ramanath Rai to inaugurate the event. He had another programme at Shravanabelagola in neighbouring Hassan district in connection with the Bahubali Maha Mastakabhisheka on Sunday and hence, he took time to inaugurate the programme here.

After the formal inauguration, Mr. Siddaramaiah went to the competition area and exchanged “punches” with Ms. Sanil as well as the children participating in the championship. Later, he unveiled the trophies of the championship.

Mr. Ramanath Rai, MLAs Shakuntala Shetty, K. Abhayachandra Jain and Mohiuddin Bava, Indian Karate founding president and Shree Devi Education Trust chairman Sadananda Shetty and others were present.

Mangaluru, Jan 29: Days after some youths allegedly threatened to 'behead' local MLA and former Karnataka minister U T Khader during a pro-CAA rally here, the Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Congress on Wednesday urged the police to register a case against the culprits.

A video of the incident that went viral on social media showed the youths raising slogans that they will "cut off his limbs and chop off his head if necessary" during the rally organised by the BJP in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday.

Addressing reporters here, District Congress Committee president Harish Kumar demanded that the police register a case on their own against the youths. He said if prompt action was not taken against the youths seen in the video, the Congress will launch an agitation before the office of the Commissioner of Police.

When asked by reporters about the video, Khader had on Tuesday brushed aside the threat, saying he had not taken it seriously. The MLA had also said he did not file a complaint with police as he had concern for the families of the youths.

Bengaluru, Apr 13: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President and former Minister D K Shivakumar has demanded resignation of Minister In-Charge of COVID-19 for his alleged irresponsible comment, despite holding a responsible post.

Mr Shivakumar's comments came after Dr Sudhakar on Sunday shared a picture of him and his children in a swimming pool, on Twitter with a caption, ''After a long time joined my children for swimming hope maintaining social distance here as well…hahaha.''

However, Dr Sudhakar deleted the tweet from his account, soon after he was criticised for sharing such a picture, when the country is facing a health crisis.
