Bengaluru, Nov 11: The allegations of sexual exploitation levelled against K.C. Venugopal, AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, provided fresh fuel for the BJP who traded charges with the Congress over the issue.

While the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Jagadish Shettar demanded that the AICC should immediately withdraw the services of Mr. Venugopal from Karnataka as the party’s in-charge, the Karnataka Pradesh Congres Committee (KPCC) President G. Parameshwara defended Mr. Venugopal and said the allegations were politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing his image.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Shettar slammed the Congress pointing out that Mr. Venugopal’s name figured in the Justice G. Shivarajan Commission report that was tabled in the Kerala Assembly on Thursday.

“There are also allegations of rape against him. He has no right to speak about others and should own responsibility and go back from Karnataka. Otherwise, the BJP will launch an agitation,” Mr. Shettar said.

In a separate press conference, Mr. Parameshwara said the allegations were baseless and politically motivated. “The CPM-led LDF government in Kerala, backed by the ruling BJP at the Centre, have been making allegations since 2013 but have not been able to establish any wrongdoing or corruption. The Judicial Inquiry Commission, instituted to probe into the allegations, has not come out with any findings or substantiated any allegations,” he said.

“Mr. Venugopal has already denied all the allegations and has even filed a defamation case against Sarita Nair (who made the allegations) and certain sections of the media at CJM court, Ernakulam. Let us wait for the court to decide. The Congress will face all allegations and prove them as nothing but politically motivated,” he said.

Pointing out that the party’s image had been built up after Mr. Venugopal was entrusted with the responsibility of managing the party’s affairs in Karnataka, Mr. Parameshwara said the BJP is indulging in “cheap politics” as it is unable to digest his popularity in the State.

Bengaluru, July 29: The Central Crime Branch arrested four international drug peddlers belonging to Kerala and recovered drugs worth Rs 1.25 crore from them, said Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday.

"We have started a war on drugs. Our agenda is to curb the drug mafia not only in Bengaluru, but in entire Karnataka. Many people are involved in the drug mafia. They are targeting students, other states, and international students who can spend and afford to become victims," said Bommai.

The recovered items include 2,000 kg LSD strips, 110 grams MDMA Cristol, 10 ecstasy tablets, 5 kg Ganja, five cell phones, weighing machine and pouches.

"When we raided a house in Soladevanahally police station area, we arrested Shahad Mohammed, Azmal, Ajin KG Verghese and Nitin Mohan. All are from Kerala and we will arrest their contacts as well. They are involved in the dark web mafia," Bommai said.

He said the peddlers were using post offices and couriers for their business.

"I'll speak to the central government, the home ministry and postal department, and other issues related to this mafia. Canada, Netherlands, and other nations are also involved in this mafia," said the state home minister.

"People from influential backgrounds are also involved in this mafia, but our objective is zero tolerance. We are using our intelligence. Drugs are coming from other states like AP, Goa, and other states," he said.
Bommai said he was personally addressing this case and appealed for support from parents, schools and colleges.

"I'm addressing this issue personally because it's important to curb the drug mafia. I need support from schools and college managements and parents. I'll also call college and hostel managements before colleges start. We will make managements responsible," he said.

Mangaluru, Jan 18: Congress leader Siddaramaiah targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah soon after he arrived in Bengaluru on Saturday, demanding his answers on various questions pertaining to the state.

In a slew of tweets under the #AnswerMadiShah banner, Siddaramaiah raised issues ranging from the August 2019 floods to the recent police shootout in Mangaluru that killed two people during an anti-CAA protest.

On December 19, Jaleel (45) and Nausheen (24) were killed after the police opened fire during a protest against the CAA.

“Two innocent victims were killed in Mangaluru in what public opinion says that it is a fake encounter. You are the Home Minister of the country. Don't you think adequate investigation has to take place when people cry foul about the incident?” Siddaramaiah asked.

He further asked: “Mr Amit Shah, before investing time to brainwash people to accept your divisive policies, why don't you visit flood-affected areas again and assess if the Central government funds  are sufficient or not?”

The Congress leader pointed out that Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had claimed that Karnataka suffered losses of over Rs 35,000 crore due to the floods. “But your aid is just Rs 1,870 crore. When are you planning to give the remaining? Will there be any funds left after the implementation of CAA, NPR & NRC?” he added.

The former chief minister brought up the Mahadayi river water sharing dispute. It may be recalled that Shah, in the run-up to the Karnataka Assembly elections in 2018, had promised a resolution to the dispute within six months if BJP was voted to power in the state.

“Mr. Amit Shah, your colleagues give contradictory statements on the initiation of Mahadayi project. Why is there a change in stance after elections? What is your stand on the issue,” Siddaramaiah asked.
