Mangaluru, Nov 12: Harikrishna Bantwal, the confidante of former union minister B Janardhana Poojary, has formally embraced the Bharatiya Janata Party nearly two years after he was expelled from the Congress on charge of anti-party activities.

The Billava community stalwart, who officially joined the saffron party during BJP’s public meet held at BC Road in Bantwal on Saturday as part of Karnataka Parivartana Yatra, on Sunday addressed another public meet at Nehru Maidan in Mangaluru city and reiterated his commitment to Hindutva ideology.

Harikrishna claimed that he quit Congress because it lacked patriotism and nationalism. “Congress leaders tolerate pro-Pakistan slogans but cannot tolerate pro-Hindu and pro-India slogans,” he claimed.

It could be recalled here that in December 2015 Harikrishna had termed the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee’s decision to expel him for six years as unacceptable. He also had claimed that party should have expelled the senior leaders instead of taking action against him. The KPCC had expelled him for contesting the Legislative Council polls as a rebel candidate against the party’s official candidate.

Continuing the barb against Congress and its leaders, Harikrishna predicted the death of Congress in coastal Karnataka in 2018. “Tulu Nadu will become a gateway for victory for BJP in the upcoming Karnataka assembly elections,” he said.

He also said that he was not new to BJP. “Earlier I was with the other BJP (B Janardhana Poojary). Now I have joined Bharatiya Janata Party. This is in fact a homecoming," he declared.

Vociferously praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that former’s dream of Congress Mukt Bharat will soon be a reality. “Modi hails from the land of Gandhi who drove away the British. Now, Modi will drive away the Congress,” he said.

Mangaluru, May 26: In the wake of mounting case of covid-19 in the coastal Karnataka, the police department has decided to sanitise the police stations in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

The superintendents of police in both the districts have been instructed to take necessary steps for sanitisation of stations in a phased manner, according to Devajyoti Ray, inspector-general of police (Western Range).

Meanwhile, the top cops of Uttara Kannada and Chikkamagaluru that forms part of the Western Range have been asked to take a call on doing so. “Hebri police station in Udupi was sanitised as part of this process and not because of any positive case emerging from staff there,” he said.

Allaying fears over stations being sealed down over positive case among station staff, Karnataka police chief Praveen Sood said this is a temporary measure and stations do not become non-functional.

“It is just that, for a mandated period police station will function from different premise when the station is being sanitised,” he said.

Noting that policemen are quarantined as precautionary measure, he said additional staff can be drafted from other stations or districts if need for it arises.

Bengaluru, Jul 16: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday hit out at state Health Minister B Sriramulu for stating that "only God can save Karnataka" from COVID-19 and asked him to resign from his post.

Speaking to media here in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said, "The government cannot say that we are helpless. Why is the government in power? You have power and you have money. It is your primary duty to serve the citizens of the state."

On being asked about Karnataka Health Minister's statement, the Congress leader said: "Let him resign and go out. God will help you only if you will put all your efforts."

Meanwhile, President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee DK Shivakumar tweeted "Karnataka's Health Minister saying 'Only God can save Karnataka' reflects poorly on @BSYBJP govt's ability to handle the Covid crisis. Why do we need such a government if they cannot tackle the pandemic?"

Sriramulu had said on Wednesday that either people should inculcate awareness or only God can save them from COVID-19.

"Who can save us at this time? It's either God or people should inculcate awareness in them. Congress leaders are involved in political mudslinging at this time. This is not fine and it will not help them in any way," the Minister had said.

"It is a crucial time, in the interest of the general public. I request all the Congress leaders not to indulge in loose talk regarding the issue, it leads to more panic situation among the general public. We are ready to adhere to any punishment if we did any wrong thing," he had added.
