Mangaluru, Mumbai to be first Indian cities to submerge: NASA study

Mangaluru, Nov 18: In what will come as a big shock for the residents of both Mumbai and Mangaluru, their beloved cities are in big danger and they should be aware of what is likely to happen, sooner rather than later.

The port city of Karnataka, Mangaluru is currently at risk of flooding from the sea levels. As per the data released by NASA, this is due to melting glaciers. In next 100 years, glacial melting may push sea levels of the city by 15.98cm as compared to 15.26cm for Mumbai and 10.65cm for New York respectively.

The study has been carried out in journal Science Advances. The study is based on findings by the scientists at NASA’S Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The research is based on forecasting tool and gradient fingerprint mapping (GFM). The tool helps planners to find out on how melting glaciers can push up sea levels for nearly 293 major port cities, including Mangaluru, Mumbai in Maharashtra and Kakinada in Andhra, a report said.

The GFM tool shows how troubling the rise of sea-levels is. An ice sheet is a glacier that covers huge area and the melting will release huge amounts of water into the sea, it added.

“By exhaustively mapping these fingerprint gradients, we form a new diagnosis tool, henceforth referred to as gradient fingerprint mapping (GFM), that readily allows for improved assessments of future coastal inundation or emergence,” the study said.

Erik Ivins, senior scientist at the laboratory said that even as cities and countries across the globe plan to weaken flooding, they have to think about next 100 years. As most of the earth’s freshwater is stored in glaciers and ice sheets, their melting owing to global warming is a major reason rising sea level, the paper added.

The melting ice sheets lead to lower gravitational pull on sea waters, permitting them to flow out. The shrinking ice mass results in the swell of the land below. This also impacts the rotation of the earth.

The rise in sea level diminish coasts and can also lead to surges of storm and flooding. Under the high emissions scenario for greenhouse gases, sea level will rise by 0.51 -1.31m by 2100, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as per report.

Bengaluru, Apr 11: Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar on Saturda said that he was hopeful that the Karnataka Chief Minister would take stern action against BJP MLA M Jayaram--who was on Friday seen celebrating his birthday with several villagers in Gubbi taluk in Tumkur, in violation of social isolation measures and nationwide lockdown to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

"I am sure that the Chief Minister will take action on all these types of activities. We have already petitioned the DGP. Suo moto case should be registered immediately," the Karnataka Congress Chief told media.

Speaking about the video conference meeting that Congress President Sonia Gandhi held with all Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) presidents via video conference, he said: "She has given us directions that the party has to play its own role. She said that the party needs to be very active, apart from the government."

With regards to the farmer's struggles due to the national lockdown, the Karnataka Congress Chief said that the farmers are in a 'very grim situation'. "I appeal to all the people of Karnataka that we should go to the fields and discuss with farmers and buy the materials. Let us purchase their fruits and vegetables and distribute them at the village level."

Bengaluru, May 19: Containment zones in Karnataka will be much smaller in size under the latest lockdown norms. However, rules and loopholes will be tightened and action against violators will be stringent in order to check the spread of the disease.

Revised guidelines issued by the Centre to the state, reveal containment zones are delineated based on mapping of cases and contacts. Intensive action will be carried out in these areas with the aim of breaking the chain of transmission. Therefore, the area of a containment zone should be appropriately defined by the district administration/local urban bodies with technical inputs at local level.

The health department is considering shrinking the size of containment zones from the existing 100 metres to open up more space for economic activities. Medical education minister K Sudhakar, also a member of the Covid taskforce, said additional chief secretary (health department) Javed Akthar will issue a new definition of a containment zone after the Covid-19 taskforce holds its next meeting.

“We are planning to further shrink it and restrict containment zones to an apartment complex, independent house or even a lane where the Covid-19 patient resides,” Sudhakar said. He went on to say bigger containment zones will impede businesses and normal activities in the vicinity, something which the government wants to avoid.

The minister said Karnataka will also do away with colour-coding districts. “With restrictions being relaxed for almost all activities, it does not make sense to pursue with colour codes. It is either containment zone or outside containment zone,” he said.

In rural areas, the minister said containment zones will be identified by the taluk heads. Government sources say it is difficult to restrict activities to certain areas or smaller location in rural areas as farmers and people will have to travel to the outskirts of their villages for their livelihood.

An official said, a containment operation (large outbreak or cluster) is deemed successful when no case is reported in 28 days from the containment zone.
