Akhila alias Hadiya, a Kerala-based girl, who was forcefully confined in her father’s house for several months for embracing Islam and marrying a Muslim man, has now got partial freedom. The Supreme Court on Monday allowed her to resume her homoeopathic studies. However, it appointed college Dean as Hadiya’s guardian whereas she wanted her loving husband, who has been fighting for her, to be her guardian.

“Nobody forced me to convert. Nobody forced me to marry a Muslim man. It was my decision. I want justice. I want freedom. I want to go with my husband. I want to meet my husband now,” a helpless Hadiya cried out in the Supreme Court requesting the judge not to send her back to her father’s house, where she was tortured.

Her deposition began after the Supreme Court in its October 30 order directed Hadiya's father Ashokan, who has links with saffron elements, to present her in the court to ascertain her views on her marriage to Muslim man, Shafin Jahan.

The Supreme Court today asked Hadiya if she wants to continue her studies on state expenditure. "I want to (continue my studies) but not on state's expense when my husband can take care of me," Hadiya replied.

Chief Justice Dipak Misra, however, told Hadiya to resume her studies and directed her to return to Salem. The court said that it is important to protect the economic interests of Hadiya and asked the state of Tamil Nadu to "provide her protection if any situation arises".

The court also said that the Dean of her college can apprise the court in case of any untoward situation. "I should be considered a human being. I want to be a good citizen," Hadiya told the Supreme Court. The court fixed third week of January as the next date of hearing in the case.

Want to meet husband, pleads Hadiya

The court spoke to Hadiya via a translator for nearly 20 minutes during which it asked her about her dreams and aspirations and what she wanted to do in her life.

“I want to meet my husband and I don't want any local guardian to be appointed,” Hadiya told the court.

She said that she has been in unlawful custody for 11 months and wanted her freedom back. As court recorded her testimony, Hadiya repeatedly said that she wanted to meet her husband.

The court directed the Salem-based Homeo Medical College to re-admit Hadiya and grant her hostel facility while also appointing the Dean of the college as her local guardian.

The apex court also asked the Kerala police to provide Hadiya with security and ensure she travels to Salem at the earliest.

Kapil Sibal shocked

Kapil Sibal, who is appearing on behalf of Shafin Jahan, told the court that he was saddened by the communal arguments in the case. "Will now all marriages between Hindus and Muslims be scrutinised by courts like this," Sibal asked.

"Why is the Bench not listening to Hadiya," Sibal said. Hadiya, before leaving for Delhi from the Kochi airport on Saturday, told the media that she wants to be with her husband. "I am a Muslim. I was not forced. I want to be with my husband," Hadiya said.

The court is hearing a plea by Shafin Jahan challenging the Kerala High Court order of May nullifying his marriage with Hadiya and seeking recall of its order asking the NIA to investigate the conversion of Hadiya to Islam and her marriage.

Hadiya’s father takes media’s help

Earlier, Hadiya's father K M Ashokan cited several controversial media reports about Kerala’s “conversion factories” in the Supreme Court and said that Sathya Sarini, PFI's sister organisation, is involved in radicalisation and conversion of youths.

Prominent television channels and news papers in India have unanimously declared Hadiya’s conversion and marriage as love-jihad, though she has rubbished the allegation repeatedly.

Hadiya realised that NA TASYA PRATIMA ASTI...  (There is no image of God) from the VEDAS. From that Quran she gets the hope of ONE GOD and she believes in the God that protects her from all the deception playing around her.  No one can harm her if ALLAH protects her.  she needs daring to accept God's will rather than following with the false flow of worshiping man made Gods without using God given intellect... When U look and search for the CREATOR, the one who put soul in our body will definetly guide U  to TRUTH of worshiping the one God ALLAH and will follow the messenger of ALLAH. When U believe in your CREATOR, U will see the reality of this World which is filled with LIES, Deception and evils.May Allah protect her and give her Peace, and May Allah make her parent realize the TRUTH of worshiping the one God who has no image.

"The Congress President Sonia Gandhi has approved the proposal for the candidature of B K Hariprasad and Naseer Ahmed as Congress candidates to contest the biennial elections to the Legislative Council of Karnataka to be elected by the MLAs," the AICC said in a release.

The election is necessitated as the term of seven MLCs- Naseer Ahmed, Jayamma, M C Venugopal, N S Bose Raju, H M Revanna (all Congress), T A Sharavana (JDS) and independent D U Mallikarjuna- will end June 30.

Polling will be held on June 29 to fill seven MLC berths, and June 18 is the last date for filing of nominations.

He has also served as general secretary of the party.

Naseer Ahmed, who is retiring as MLC on June 30, will be seeking another term.

According to state Congress president D K Shivakumar, more than 200 aspirants have sought tickets for the two seats that the party can win in the legislative council polls.

Feb 29: The "Dadi of Shaheenbagh" on Friday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not understand the pain of losing children, as speakers at an anti-CAA rally here called on protesters to maintain peace and not give in to any provocation.

Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, said that the battle is not for a day or two, but the protesters will have to be prepared to continue it for years to come.

Asma Khatoon, who has earned fame as the "Dadi of Shaheenbagh" in Delhi, asked how can a person take care of the whole country when he cannot maintain his own family.

"He would have realised how it feels to lose a child if he had his own children," she told a gathering at the Park Circus Maidan, which is being termed as the Shaheenbagh of Kolkata with women holding a sit-in for the last 53 days to protest the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, proposed nationwide NRC, and the NPR.

The death toll Delhi's communal violence has gone up to 42.

She said it is not biryani that has attracted women to the protest at Shaheen bagh while holding that such vilification campaigns will have no effect on the agitation.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh has claimed that "uneducated men and women" are protesting at Delhi's Shaheen Bagh and Kolkata's Park Circus as they get money and biryani purchased with foreign funds.

"Home Minister Amit Shah has called 20 protesters to meet him, but I want to tell him that we are one lakh and I want him to mention the place where he wants us to go for the meeting," she said.

Tushar Gandhi said, "People should stay united and not give in to any provocation," he said.

Gandhi said that the people of West Bengal are lucky to have Mamata Banerjee as their chief minister.

"They will try to break her also and it is necessary that you continue to give her support," he said.

Gandhi claimed that no one can harm a country where its mothers and sisters come out to save it.

He claimed that the CAA is not about Hindus or Muslims, but will really affect the poor people, who will be made to run around to get their papers instead of earning for their basic and daily needs.

"It's a dichotomous government that we have at the Centre. On the one hand, they want us to provide documents to prove our citizenship, while on the other they refuse to accept the papers that one produces before it for the purpose," he said.

He claimed that the government is forcing its people to resort to lies and declare that they are political refugees from countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Gandhi claimed that time and again documents with the government like electoral rolls and land documents have been used to identify people of certain communities during riots.

"So it is dangerous to give too much information to the government," he said.

He called on the people to have faith in non-violence and asked them to maintain peace and harmony.

B R Ambedkar's great-grandson Rajratna Ambedkar claimed that it is the Adivasis who will also be affected by the CAA.

"I want to tell Modi and Shah that the country runs on the Constitution by Ambedkar and not M S Golwalkar (of RSS)," he said, adding that because of the rights conferred on people by the Constitution, those backward people who did not have the right to sit on a bullock cart are now flying jet planes.

He said that Modi and Shah committed an error by enacting the CAA as it has turned the people of the country into Indians only, instead of Hindus, Muslims, Christians or Sikhs.

"Every machinery of the country has been taken control of by the RSS. If one Modi or one Shah goes, they will bring in several more Modi or Shah," he said.
