Chikkamagaluru, Nov 27: Provocative statements by leaders of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal ahead of Datta Jayanti programme at the historic Baba Budangiri darga site on the outskirts of the city has created a tense atmosphere in the communally sensitive region.

The activists of VHP and BD are also organising bike rallies in different parts of Chikkamangaluru district to mobilise people for the three-day saffron event beginning on December 1. With the Assembly elections coming soon, the programme has gained significance.

The saffron outfit leaders have been repeatedly saying that they would exhibit their strength on December 3 in Baba Budangiri. A Bajrang Dal leader on Saturday warned that the December 6 incident (Babri mosque demolition) may recur in Baba Budangiri too if Muslims failed to voluntarily shift their graves from the site. SDPI has demanded the police to arrest those who deliver provocative speeches.

Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has been demanding that the Baba Budan Dargah is declared a Hindu shrine, are also participating in bike rallies.

VHP and Bajrang Dal leaders have often said that they would mobilise good crowds for the programme this year and pressurise the State government to declare the shrine a place of worship for Hindus.

In view of the three-day event, the Chikkamagaluru district administration has imposed prohibitory orders as per various sections of the Criminal Procedure Code. Those participating in the rally or procession have been restricted from carrying weapons and raising objectionable slogans.

Deputy Commissioner M.K. Srirangaiah has said that the administration will make arrangements for providing basic facilities for the devotees visiting the shrine during the event. Carrying cameras and phones inside the shrine has been banned.

Meanwhile, the district administration has put a restriction on tourists’ visit to places around Baba Budangiri Darga for three days from December 1, in view of the Datta Jayanti.

Srirangaiah has issued a press release stating that no tourists would be allowed to Baba Budangiri, Mullayyanagiri and other places in the hilly ranges. Similarly, movement of long chassis vehicle on the narrow roads connecting these places has also been stopped.

The Datta Mala Abhiyana that began on November 24 will conclude on December 3 when the devotees visit Baba Budangiri for the “religious” programme. Prior to that, the organisers will take out a Sankeertana Yatra on December 1 and Shobha Yatra on December 2.

Mangaluru, June 11: The Saudi Arabia based Expertise Contracting Company, which is repatriating its employees to India and other countries, today allocated around 90 seats of one of its chartered flights to Kannadigas stranded in Saudi Arabia.

The Gulf Air flight took off with around 175 passengers on board from Dammam International Airport around noon local time. It is expected to land at Mangaluru International Airport at around 7 p.m. Indian time.

In fact the company had chartered the flights only to repatriate its employees. However, due to the lack of special flights under Vande Bharati Mission, the company decided to help the other stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia, who had approached Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum for help.

A company official said that around 2,000 employees from various countries in the Indian subcontinent are being repatriated, of which 1,665 are Indians.  Already hundreds of them have reached India, and hundreds are still waiting for repatriation.

“We are grateful to Expertise for allowing to travel in the flight which the company had chartered to repatriate its own employees,” said one of the passengers before boarding the flight at the airport.

Director of Expertise, KS Shaikh said the 20-year-old Expertise group, one of the largest conglomerates in the GCC operating in petrochemical and heavy equipment sectors, has more than 10,000 employees and their family members in the Gulf, mainly in Jubail, one of the largest industrial cities.

Of these, the company has chosen over 2,000 employees for the covid-related repatriations considering various emergencies. He said 12 chartered flights have been engaged to carry out the repatriation exercise to the Indian subcontinent.

Bengaluru, Jul 16: Aiming to forge a citizen-government partnership in combating the Covid pandemic, the Karnataka government is seeking plasma donations from survivors for a token appreciation of Rs 5,000, a minister said on Wednesday.

"I request all those who have recovered from Covid-19 to donate plasma and save lives. As a token of our appreciation, we will give Rs 5,000 to patients who come forward and donate their plasma," said Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar.

He said the battle against the pandemic can only be won through citizen-government partnership.

On Wednesday, Covid cases swelled by 1,975 infections in Bengaluru, ground zero for the pandemic in the southern state, raising its total number of cases to 22,944, out of which 17,051 are active.

In the past 24 hours, the state as a whole registered a record 3,176 cases, raising Karnataka's tally to 47,253, even as 87 people succumbed to the virus.
