Mangaluru, Dec 21: A young non-resident Indian engineer from coastal Karnataka had to land in police custody soon after he arrived at Mangaluru International Airport on Thursday after working in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for two years. In what appears to be a case of mistaken identity, the authorities detained him because they believed him to be an accused in a five year old murdered case.

Mohammad Ashfaq, son of Ahmad Bava, a resident of Kulai Vidyanagara on the outskirts of Managluru, had been to Saudi Arabia’s Dammam in 2015 after completing his engineering graduation. He was eager to meet his family members who were waiting for him at the airport on Thursday morning. However, to his shock, immigration authorities surrounded him and handed him over a court notice.

The murder case

In 2012 rowdy-sheeter Kodikere Shivaraj was hacked death by two miscreants – Dinesh and Prakash – at Kulai Kodikere. Police managed to arrest both the accused. Later, Prakash was murdered by the gang members of slain Shivaraj. Dinesh was sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court earlier this year.

However, the police believe that one Mohammad Asfar had given supari to eliminate Shivaraj. Asfar hails from Kulai Sannangara and his father’s name also Ahmed Bava. Police suspect that he had flown to Saudi Arabia to evade arrest. They have also issued a lookout notice for him.

Finally released

After reading the passenger’s first name and his father’s name, the immigration authorities did not make any delay to detain Mohammad Ashfaq, who had come from Saudi Arabia.

Even before an innocent Ashfaq could realise what’s happening, he was handed over to the jurisdictional Bajpe police who in turn handed him over to Panambur police who are looking for Moammad Asfar.

However, after interrogation, the coups realised that they have detained a wrong person who does not even aware of Shivaraj murder case. He was released following the intervention of senior police officers of Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate.

Thank God, Police realised their mistake soon.  Otherwise Mr. Ashfaq would have been put in jail and kept for years without any trial.  Police should give full opportunity to any one for clarification before arresting.  Innocents should not be harassed for no reason.  thanks to senior police offers of Mangalore city police commissionerate for their quick response.

May 6: Congress general secretary KC Venugopal on Tuesday termed as "inhumane" the government's decision to "impose excessive costs" on NRIs and expatriates for bringing them into the country from COVID-19-affected nations.

He demanded that the central government fly in the poor and vulnerable free of cost while charge the others with normal fares instead of high costs.

"The central government's decision to impose excessive costs on NRIs flying in special flights from the Covid-affected countries is an inhumane act," he said in a statement.

Venugopal said it was due to protests by a large number of expatriates and their relatives as well as the general public over the past few days that the central government took the decision to bring back Indian citizens from abroad.

"However, it is cruel that the Central government has taken advantage of this plight of expatriates by increasing the price of air fares up to three times. This is inhumane," Venugopal said in his statement.

He urged the Centre to take urgent steps to provide free travel to the most vulnerable, unemployed, sick and pregnant women and to others on normal fare.

Air India will operate 64 repatriation flights for a week from May 7 while the Navy deployed two ships as India rolled out a massive evacuation plan on Tuesday to bring back thousands of its nationals stranded abroad due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown.

Those availing the repatriation flights will be charged, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told a virtual press conference in New Delhi. A passenger on a London-Delhi flight will be charged Rs 50,000 and on a Dhaka-Delhi flight Rs 12,000, he added.

From the Gulf countries to Malaysia and the UK to the US, the multi-agency operation christened 'Vande Bharat Mission' will see the state-owned airline operate the non-scheduled commercial flights till May 13 to ferry around 15,000 Indian nationals from 12 countries.

Mangaluru, Mar 7: After coronavirus cases were confirmed in different parts of the country, there has been a sudden jump in demand for mask and safety gears like gloves and sanitizers in Mangaluru and Udupi.

With the increase in demand, medical shop owners said that they were finding it difficult to meet the demand.

In fact, there is a demand for bulk supply of masks and gloves. There was demand for masks when Covid-19 was confirmed in China two months ago. Bulk quantities of masks were purchased in order to supply them to Indian employees working in China. A few private firms had purchased masks from Mangaluru in the month of December.
