Mangaluru, Jan 4: Even though Hindutva groups such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal had planned to take out a funeral procession of Deepak Rao, who was hacked to death yesterday, the police foiled their bid by secretly transporting the mortal remains in an ambulance to the house of the victim at Katipalla on the outskirts of the city on Thursday morning.

When the saffron activists came to known that the police shifted the dead body without their knowledge hundreds of them gathered in front of Deepak’s house and prevented the police from shifting the body from the ambulance to the house. A tense atmosphere has prevailed in the region. The activists are exerting pressure on the police to take the dead body back to the hospital and allow them to hold a procession.

Meanwhile, police have clamped prohibitory orders under Section 35 of Karnataka Police Act in the entire commissionerate limit till Thursday 10pm. Any procession will be considered violation of law during this period.

According to sources, the BJP and other right wing organisations had asked city police commissioner T R Suresh for permission to take out a funeral procession from AJ Hospital to Katipalla, a 15km stretch on the national highway. However, the top cop denied the permission considering that procession may lead to a law and order problem like in the past and result in a communal violence.

In the past many funeral processions taken out by the Hindutva groups had led to communal riots in Dakshina Kannada. In July 2017, the Hindutva groups had taken out a funeral procession of a slain RSS activists even though police had denied permission for the procession. This had led to communal tension in various parts of the district.

Bengaluru, Jul 5: In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic and the fear of layoffs lurking everywhere, the state government is holding a first-of-its-kind virtual job fair on July 10, to help people find jobs commensurate with their skill sets.

Co-ordinated by the Karnataka Skill Development Corporation (KSDC), the job fair will see participation of more than 40 companies for about 6,000 job openings.

The government will connect companies with job seekers who have registered on the recently-launched Skill Connect portal or on the Kaushalya Karnataka’s portal for migrant workers from the state who have returned home.

A candidate can either directly apply to a company, or await the portal to match their skills with available jobs. There is also a self-evaluation section on the website which will suggest whether a candidate needs to further skill oneself or whether they are eligible for jobs with their current set of skills.

Firms such as Life Insurance Corporation, Barbeque Nation and Arvind Mills are among the participants.

New Delhi, Jan 28: The Supreme Court of India today granted bail to 17 convicts sentenced to life imprisonment in 2002 Gujarat massacre case, pending their appeal before the Supreme Court.

The convicts also have to participate in social and spiritual services, said the court, announcing the riders for bail.

The Bench of Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant directed for the convicts to be segregated into two groups to be sent to Indore and Jabalpur.

District legal authorities in Indore and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh have been asked to ensure that the convicts do the spiritual and social work the court has asked for.

The Supreme Court has also asked the administration to find them work for livelihood. The state legal services authority has been asked to file a compliance report as also report on their conduct.

The case concerns the mass killing of 33 innocent Muslims - mostly women and children - who were burnt alive at Sardarpura village in March 2002.

This was part of the mass massacre that swept through Gujarat in the aftermath of the death of train passengers on Sabarmati Express in Godhra on Feb 27, 2002. Thousands of innocent Muslims were killed and raped in the three-day violence. The victims include hundreds of children including newborns.

In 2016, the Gujarat High Court had upheld the conviction of 17 accused in the Sardarpura massacre case.

Earlier, a Special SIT court had convicted a total of 31 persons in the case, after three years of trial against 73 persons from Sardarpura and nearby villages.
