Fed up with delay, Kalburgi's family files plea for SC-monitored probe

Dharwad, Jan 7: Rationalist Dr M M Kalburgi's family has filed a petition before the Supreme Court, pleading that a committee headed by a retired judge of the court be formed to probe his murder. They want an investigation by a team of experienced officials led by an ADGP-rank officer.

They said the ongoing investigation was getting delayed and was going nowhere.

Dr Kalburgi family has filed the petition before the Christmas vacation bench, and it is expected to come up for hearing on January 10.

The writer was shot dead on August 30 in 2015, and the state government had ordered a CID probe into the incident. The murderers have not yet been traced.

It is said there are similarities in the murders of Kalburgi, Dr Narendra Dabolkar and Govind Pansare. But there is no co-ordination between the CID and CBI and there has been not much progress in the investigation, they said.

The report should be submitted to the Supreme Court, and the team members should not be changed without the direction of the court, the family has said. The Maharashtra and Goa governments should appoint IGP-rank officers as nodal officers to co-operate with the investigating team, which should collect reports from NIA, CBI, and police, they added.

"We waited for two years, having faith in the state government. There is a limit for the wait, and we decided to approach the Supreme Court," Umadevi said.

Bengaluru, Mar 2: Karnataka Minister BC Patil on Monday repeated his earlier statements that he will approach the Centre to bring a law to "shoot at sight" anyone who raises anti-India slogans.

"I am not going back on my statement as I have not said anything wrong. I had said that I will ask the central government to bring a law to shoot at sight those who shout slogans against India. Nowadays it has become a fashion for some youths to get popularity this way which spoils the country and patriotism," Patil told reporters here.

"There is nothing wrong in asking for a law. I have not said that I will myself shoot someone who shouts slogans against India. If the same thing happens in Pakistan, they will be beheaded. But we are not so brutal, we book a case and send them to judicial custody," he added.

Patil also said that there was no need for holding discussions over the amended Citizenship Act, but added that the ruling BJP will defend it if the opposition raises a stir in the state Assembly.

The budget session of the Karnataka Assembly began on Monday.

Bengaluru, Jul 3: Opposition leader in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday opined that there is no other option left but to resort to 'Jail Bharo' agitation to expose the ruling BJP government's indulge in 'Corona Corruption' which runs into more than Rs 2000 crore.

Siddaramaiah said that according to a submission to the Karnataka High Court the government has submitted that it has incurred Rs 3,392 crore expenditure for Corona in the State so far. While the market price for equipment purchased will not exceed Rs 1163 crore and it clearly shows that the corruption is to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore.

Siddaramaiah speaking to a private TV channel here on Friday said the chief minister B S Yediyurappa-led State government should come out with a White Paper on the money spent for purchases made facilities provided to patients.

According to submission to the Court, the Government has purchased 1000 Ventilators by paying Rs 120 crore, while the market price is Rs 40 crores at Rs 4 lakh for each Ventilator. Why is Rs 120 crore more paid, does it not lead to doubt the government's claim. For purchase of kits, mask, gloves etc. it amounted to Rs 1,500 crores but paid by the government was Rs 9,000 crore."
