Mangaluru, Jan 18: The authorities have suspended a woman pilot pending enquiry after she was found to be an inebriated state just before the scheduled take off of a Dubai-bound SpiceJet flight at Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday.

According to sources, the 35-year-old Turkish woman, who was supposed to fly the aircraft found to be reeking of alcohol and was made to undergo breathalyzer tests, following which she was not allowed to board the plane.

Due to the incident, nearly 180 passengers off the flight had to spend the whole night  at Airport in anxiety.

The flight was supposed to take off at 12.40 a.m. on Wednesday. All the passengers had already completed check-in formalities. However, the regular medical examination of the crew revealed that the woman pilot had no control over herself thanks to excessive consumption of alcohol.

A senior official said that as part of the airline’s duty to protect the lives of passengers, it took the preventive measure of not allowing the pilot to command the flight.

The passengers had to wait till 6 a.m. when the airline managed to arrange another pilot.

SpiceJet has been operating flights between Mangaluru and Dubai for past one year. The plane has been leased from Turkey based Corendon Airlines. Hence, all the crew members are said to be Turkish nationals.

Bengaluru, May 3: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa requested his Maharashtra counterpart Uddhav Thackeray to release six TMC water from his state's reservoirs to rivers in Karnataka to meet acute drinking water shortage in North Karnataka.

Yediyurappa pointed out that the North Karnataka districts, namely Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Kalaburagi, Yadagiri and Raichur are facing acute shortage of drinking water due to onset of summer during early days of March this year.

"I request you to kindly direct the concerned authorities to release 3 TMC of water from Warna/Koyna reservoirs to Krishna river and 3 TMC of water from Ujjaini reservoir to Bhima river on humanitarian grounds for drinking purpose," Yediyurappa said in his letter.

He reminded Thackeray that even in the past the Maharashtra government had released water from its reservoirs to meet the drinking water needs of both human beings and livestock in drought-affected areas of Karnataka.

Mangaluru, Jan 27: No power can now stop Kashmiri Pandits from going back to Kashmir, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday, forcefully defending the NDA government’s decision to reorganise Jammu and Kashmir and abrogating its special status under Article 370.

Addressing a massive pro-CAA, NRC rally organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party at Gold Finch city, Kuloor, on the outskirts of the city, the Defence minister also sent a strong message to Pakistan and said India will not let anyone live in peace if it is harmed.

"We will not touch anyone, but if someone bothers us, then we are not going to let them live in peace," he said.

Referring to the exodus of a large number of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley in the late 1990s at the height of militancy, Singh said no power now can stop them from returning to their homes.

On the Citizenship Amendment Act, the minister said it is not a law to hurt the sentiments of any religion but to give relief to victims of religious persecution.

Mahatma Gandhi had told Nehru to give citizenship to minorities like Hindus and Sikhs if they come to India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has fulfilled that vision by bringing in the law, Singh said.

On several non-BJP states refusing to implement the CAA, the defence minister said it it is a central law and everyone should follow it.

Accusing the Congress of misleading people on the issue, he said the party should not forget its duty towards the nation just because it is in opposition.
