Mangaluru, Jan 23: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign against incumbent Congress government in Karnataka took an extremely ugly turn when a party leader declared in a public speech that the looming Assembly polls will be a direct battle between Allah and Rama in Bantwal constituency of Dakshina Kannada district.

The Bantwal town police booked a case against Karkala MLA V Sunil Kumar under Sections 153(A) and 505(2) of the IPC for his vicious and provocative speech wherein he obliquely warned the Hindu community that the victory of six-time MLA B Ramanatha Rai in next polls will be a victory of Allah and defeat of Rama.

The case was registered on Tuesday based on a complaint lodged by Bantwal Youth Congress president Prashant Kulal, who accused Sunil Kumar of trying to divide society in the name of religion and disrupt harmony.

Addressing the saffron party’s rally in Kalladka town of Bantwal on Monday, Sunil Kumar, came down heavily on Rai for stating in a Muslim programme that he won from Bantwal constituency six times by the grace of Allah.

"This is a question dignity of Hindus… The upcoming election is not a battle between (BJP candidate) Rajesh Naik and Ramanath Rai. This is not a clash between BJP and Congress. This is an electoral battle between Allah and Rama. Now you have to decide whether you want to make Allah victorious once again in your constituency or to the one who loves Rama,” he said.

Replying to Sunil Kumar’s controversial statement, Rai, who is also the district in-charge minister of Dakshina Kannada, said that he belongs to people of all religions and not to any particular caste or community.

“There is no clash between Allah and Rama. For me both are same. Both Islam and Hinduism ask their followers to become good human beings. Using gods and religions for poll campaign is an extremely ugly practice. Being an elected representative Sunik Kumar shouldn’t have stooped to such a low level,” Rai said.

Bengaluru, May 5: Life is limping back to a new normalcy in most parts of Karnataka with easing of Covid-19 induced restrictions yesterday as the State headed into the third phase of lockdown started since March 24.

According to the guidelines issued by the Centre, industrial activities, construction works, essential, non-essential shops, delivery of essential goods through e- commerce, courier and postal services, banking and agriculture activities, plying of four-wheelers and two-wheelers and inter-state movement of goods vehicles is permitted in all the zones, whereas buses are allowed to ply only in green and orange zone districts.

This apart, sale of liquor was also allowed at the designated shops. Police said vehicular movement is allowed only from 7am to 7pm for ordinary citizens.

Clarifying about the movement of people, Bengaluru police commissioner Bhaskar Rao tweeted, "From Monday you don't need a pass to move in Bengaluru between 7am and 7pm. After 7 pm and up to 7am the following morning, even if you have a pass you are not allowed to move except medical and essential service. Checkpoints will remain and your ID may be asked. Please be responsible." After the restrictions were lifted, heavy vehicular movement was witnessed in parts of Bengaluru leading to traffic jam in some areas.

Chikpet, which is the main trade area in Bengaluru, saw some activities.

With restrictions on public transport continuing, this unusually crowded place had very less footfall. "Movement of public is limited due to ban on public transport, such as city buses and Metro Rail.

"The trade activities are taking place between retailers," trade activist and joint secretary of Jain International Trade Organisation Sajjanraj Mehta said .

Select liquor shops in the city and other parts of the state pulled up shutters after being closed for about six weeks due to the lockdown with tipplers thronging them in huge numbers at many places.

Some traders in the city complained that they received notices regarding the Tax Deduction at Source for the month of April "thought here were no trading activities."

Meanwhile, Chief minister B S Yediyurappa announced on Monday that free bus service for migrant labourers, which is operating smoothly, has been extended till Thursday.

Chikkamgaluru, Feb 21: Wazi Noronha, aka, Vojald, the father of Amulya Leona Noronha, who lives in Koppa taluk of Chickmagalur district has said that he was shocked by his daughter’s pro-Pakistan slogans.

“Let her rot in jail. I don’t mind if police break her bones, I don’t support what she said and I will not approach lawyers for her bail. She has committed a grave mistake,” he said.

Amulya, a 19-year-old student activist, was booked for sedition yesterday after she raised ‘Long Live Pakistan’ slogans at a CAA-NRC rally. A visibly embarrassed Asaduddin Owaisi, AIMIM chief and MP tried to snatch the mic away from her and slammed her. Karnataka Police have registered a case under IPC Section 124A (Offence of sedition) against Amulya.

Mr. Wazi, who owns a two-acre areca plantation and runs a poultry farm, said he would not make any attempts to get her bail. “Let the law take its course. I cannot approve of her statement,” he said.

He said he had cautioned his daughter against getting involved in protests. “I told her to complete studies first and later she could fight for poor people. But what she said yesterday is not acceptable. I don’t know what made her so. I hope a probe would bring out who prompted her to make such statements,” he said.

Mr. Wazi also admitted that he was associated with BJP and had worked for saffronite leaders like Shobha Karandlaje and D N Jeevaraj.
