Ramanagaram, Jan 24: A tense atmosphere prevailed in a local court in Karnataka’s Ramanagaram on Wednesday when a rape and murder convict turned violent after getting death sentence.

Salim (35), the rape convict, who was given a death sentence by the district and sessions court judge, picked up some bricks in a fit of rage while walking out of the court premises and hurled them at media people and lawyers. He then grabbed a rifle from a policeman's hand.

The police then wrested the firearm back from him and took him away in an autorickshaw.

Rape and murder

Salim was convicted and sentenced to death, for raping and murdering a nine-year-old girl. The sentence was awarded by the third district and sessions court here.

Police said Salim raped the girl on August 15, 2012 at Janata colony, Tavarekere, Bengaluru Rural taluk.

Salim, a resident of Goriplaya in Bengaluru, was visiting his sister in Tavarekere on that day.

He took the rape victim with him on the pretext of buying beedis and then raped her at his sister's house when no one was at home. He killed her there.

The Tavarekere police had registered the case and arrested him. When the charges were proved, the judge sentenced him to 10 years in jail and Rs 50,000 fine for the rape; and death sentence for the murder.

It was good if police would have shot him when he went aggressive. This type of people should not have any place on earth. Now he will apply in higher courts and buy more time.

Bengaluru, Jul 7: Former Health minister and Congress MLA UT Khader has alleged that the state government has purchased coronavirus equipment for more than twice the actual price.

"Rs 500 sanitizers have been purchased for Rs 900 and Rs 9,000 has been paid to Rs 1200 for the thermal metre by the government. Instead of asking to allow him to work, Mr B Sriramulu, being health minister he must work for the people," he said.

He said that three months have passed since the pandemic started but the state government is still struggling to send ambulances to needy patients.

"Instead of ambulance it is sending final rights vehicle to needy people," Khader said.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, there are 23,474 coronavirus cases in Karnataka including 13,255 and 372 deaths.

Mysuru, Jun 18: The Karnataka government's proposal announced on Thursday to hold online classes for students amid concerns over COVID-19 has not gone down well with thousands of tribal students residing in villages across the state.

A team from Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) visited a few tribal hamlets in Mysuru and Kodagu recently and found that the students, unlike their urban counterparts, lack accessibility to not just smartphones and computers, but basic necessities like power supply.

''When such is the situation in the tribal hamlets, how can you expect students to catch up on their studies if classes are held online?'' wondered M L Parashurama Member, KSCPCR, who toured villages like Thithimathi, Beematagere, Devamachchi and Gaddadi in Kodagu's Virajpet taluk, besides Bavali, Balyadi, Machchuru, and Anemone in Mysuru's HD Kote taluk along with Chairperson Antony Sebastian.
