Mangaluru, Jan 24: Haji Abdul Hameed Kandak, a well-known social worker, veteran community leader and philanthropist of Mangaluru, passed away on Wednesday evening after he suffered a massive cardiac arrest while delivering a speech.

72-year-old Haji is survived by his wife, four sons, a daughter, and a large number of relatives, friends and well-wishers.

He collapsed on the stage while speaking as a chief guest at a seminar on judiciary and constitution organised by the Dakshina Kannada district unit of Ahinda movement at Woodlands Hotel in the city on the eve of Republic Day.

He began his speech expressing frustration over the current situation in India. “Those who are trying to change the constitution and those who killed the father of the nation are ruling our country now,” he said.

He also said that even though religious minorities, backward classes and dalits together comprise a vast majority of India’s population, they are oppressed and suppressed by a very small section of people. “We had built Ahinda movement years ago. However there is no unity among us. We are divided and deprived of all our rights. A small section of people is ruling us,” he said and called upon Ahinda communities (minorities, backward classes and dalits) to unite.

Meanwhile, the speaker’s face turned pale. He almost lost his voice when he said that he was feeling uneasy. All of a sudden he collapsed. DYFI leader Muneer Katipalla, fishermen community leader Vasudeva Boloor, former Beary Academy president B A Mohammed Haneef and others who were present on the stage rushed to help him. Within minutes Haji was taken to nearby Unity Hospital where he breathed his last.

Mr Katipalla said that Haji was active till last moment and prior to the commencement of Ahinda programme he mingled with the people freely and discussed about the social and political situation of the coastal Karnataka.

Son of a farmer, Haji Abdul Hameed Kandak was a successful businessman in the city. He had engaged in travel industry. He was an advocate of unity among Muslims. He had been at forefront of several social movements and was a prominent Muslim leader in coastal Karnataka. He had served as member of the All-India Haj Committee, and as vice-president of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Muslim Central Committee. He had also been the president of Central Market Merchants' Association. He was also a leader of Congress party.

Family sources, said that the last rites will be performed at Ullal Darga mosque premises on the outskirts of the city on Thursday, January 25.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raajioun.  We pray with almighty allah to bless late haji abdul hameed kandak with his jannaathul firdouse, aameen. May almighty allah give patience & forebearance to his family to bear the brunt of bereavement. This humble gentleman is known to me since last 50years or more during his association as a manager in a bombay based company called byculla transport co, near badria masjid, bunder, mangalore.   Due to his  sincere & social nature  as a mediater & compromiser between two parties or groups and to unite  them.,  he was familiarly and friendly addressed by his friends circle as uno chief.  Holy qur'an says *kullu nafsin zaikathul mouth* (every living soul has to taste death). Even though his death is a great loss to the community and humanity, we have to respect our creater almighty allah's decision & pray for his maghfirah.

IInna Lillahi Va inna ilahi rajivoon, May Allah grant him Jannat. Whenever we met always discussed about community issues. His deep concern about disunity in the community, enmity among brotherly communities   and leader’s failure to tackle on burning social and community issues are highly praise worthy.

Bengaluru, Feb 14: Bengaluru Police on Friday said that it has busted a gang engaged in e-commerce fraud over the online marketplace who were involved in 200 of the 316 cheating cases registered last year.

"We registered 316 cases for cheating through online marketplaces last year. We have busted a gang operating from Rajasthan's Bharatpur and arrested 5 people. They are responsible for 200 out of 316 cases. We are questioning the accused," Bhaskar Rao, Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru told reporters here.

Explaining their modus operandi, the Police Commissioner said, "There were fictitious buyers and sellers on the online marketplace. These people used to call up prospective buyers and sellers. The products that were shown were two-wheelers, four-wheelers, electronic items and furniture."

"People used to send their money to these fraudsters using their QR code. The fraudsters were operating from Bharatpur in Rajasthan. A police team of 15 was sent to the place from where they were operating. Rajasthan police gave us full cooperation and we were able to arrest five persons," he added.

Rao said that these fraudsters had an idea about the loopholes in the e-commerce sector and exploited them.
"Some of those arrested were employed in the e-commerce and banking business and they had an idea about the loopholes in this sector," he said.

"We warn the citizens to ensure that they verify the antecedents of the buyers and sellers in this sector before spending money on these platforms," he added.

New Delhi, Jan 18: Senior advocate Indira Jaising urged the mother of Nirbhaya to pardon the men on death row who were convicted for the 2012 gang rape of her daughter.

Jaising took to Twitter to make the request shortly after Asha Devi on Friday expressed her disappointment following a Delhi court postponed the date of the execution of the four convicts.

"While I fully identify with the pain of Asha Devi I urge her to follow the example of Sonia Gandhi who forgave Nalini and said she didn't not want the death penalty for her. We are with you but against the death penalty," Jaisingh tweeted.

Asha Devi lashed out at Jaisingh suggesting pardon for the convicts. "I can't believe how Indira Jaising even dared to suggest such this. I met her many times over the years in Supreme Court, not once she asked for my wellbeing and today, she is speaking for convicts. Such people earn livelihood by supporting rapists, hence rape incidents don't stop," Asha Devi told ANI.

Nalini was arrested and convicted for her role in the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.

Earlier on Friday Asha Devi had lashed out at the courts and the government stating that "the same people who had in the year 2012 gone around participating in rallies and raised slogans for women's safety are playing with the death of my daughter for their political gains. They have stopped the execution for their political gains."

The death-row convicts who were earlier slated to be executed on January 22 at 7 am are set to be hanged on February 1 at 6 am.

Asha Devi rued that the convicts got what they wished for. "I will not be satisfied until they are hanged," she added.

Four convicts, Vinay, Akshay, Pawan and Mukesh were convicted and sentenced to death for raping a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus in the national capital on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012.

The victim, who was later given the name Nirbhaya succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Singapore where she had been airlifted for medical treatment.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: The Karnataka government would provide Rs 10,000 immediate relief to families affected by heavy rains and flooding in districts across coastal, central and southern areas of the state, an official said on Thursday.

"Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has directed all the Deputy Commissioners in the rain-cum-flood-hit districts to provide Rs 10,000 interim relief to the affected families and Rs 5 lakh to those whose houses were completely damaged in the natural disaster," a Revenue Department official told media persons here.

As the south-west monsoon advanced and intensified, heavy and widespread rains with gusty winds have been lashing 12 of the 30 districts across the state, wreaking havoc and disrupting normal life due to flooding, landslides, lakes and ponds overflowing, and rivers and their tributaries in the spate.

"The Chief Minister also instructed the officials to make use schools, colleges and public places as relief centres to shelter the rain-cum-flood-hit families, as hostels and community halls have been converted into Covid care centres in the affected districts," said the official.

The affected districts have also been advised to conduct a survey of crop loss suffered by farmers for compensation under the centrally-sponsored Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and the Weather Based Crop Insurance Schemes.

Deputy Commissioners have been told to take preventive measures to protect and provide relief to the people from heavy rains, floods and landslides in the affected districts.

"Yediyurappa also directed ministers in-charge of the districts to remain in their constituency and visit the affected areas to assess damage caused by the rains and flash floods for compensation and relief aid," noted the official.

The Chief Minister on Wednesday announced Rs 50 crore for rescue and relief operations in the affected districts across the state.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological department has issued a red alert on heavy rains in the affected districts of Kodagu, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttar Kannada in the coastal region and in Shivamoga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Haveri in the Malnad region.

"Bagamandala in Kodagu district where Cauvery river springs near Talakaveri received a whopping 486 mm rain during the last 24 hours, causing flash floods and disrupting normal life as offices, shops and eateries remained shut and public transport was affected," added the official.

The water-level in Cauvery and Lakshmanatheertha is flowing at high level while the Sayi layout and Kuvempu layout Kushalnagar is inundated and the affected residents were shifted to safer location.
