The Karnataka BJP on Saturday described the government's attempts to withdraw cases filed against innocent minorities in communal incidents as "anti-democratic" and against "secular norms" and sought that the proposal be dropped immediately.

Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, BJP state general secretary Shobha Karandlaje termed the proposal as "unacceptable" and "dangerous". "Never before in the political history of the state has any government set such a dangerous precedent, which is grossly communal and has the potential to disturb law, order, peace and tranquillity," she said.

Shobha accused the government of practising politics of minority appeasement. She said every government in the past had withdrawn cases filed against Kannada activists and farmers and it was the prerogative of the state cabinet. "But, it was not on the basis of majority or minority. In the present case, the circular by the Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP) clearly states that the cases filed against minorities need to be withdrawn. This is deplorable," Shobha said.

She said the circular by the DG&IGP made it clear that the government was misusing police machinery to further its political and electoral ends.

"The attempt to project only minorities as innocent is unfortunate. This goes against the oath taken by the chief minister that he will do justice and provide equality to all sections of society without bias or discrimination," she said.

The Siddaramaiah government, however, rejected the BJP charge and said the circular was applicable to innocents belonging to various minority communities and also involves those arrested during agitations over inter-state water disputes.

The circular by Assistant Inspector General of Police Shivaprakash Devaraju and addressed to police commissioners of Mangaluru, Belagavi and superintendents of police of various districts asked them to withdraw cases against the innocent minorities booked on charges of rioting and other offences.

Rubbishing the BJP’s claim of "Muslim appeasement" by Congress party ahead of coming assembly polls in the state, Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy clarified that the communique, dated January 25, referred to all minorities including Muslims, Christians, Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs.

Bengaluru, July 29: The Central Crime Branch arrested four international drug peddlers belonging to Kerala and recovered drugs worth Rs 1.25 crore from them, said Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday.

"We have started a war on drugs. Our agenda is to curb the drug mafia not only in Bengaluru, but in entire Karnataka. Many people are involved in the drug mafia. They are targeting students, other states, and international students who can spend and afford to become victims," said Bommai.

The recovered items include 2,000 kg LSD strips, 110 grams MDMA Cristol, 10 ecstasy tablets, 5 kg Ganja, five cell phones, weighing machine and pouches.

"When we raided a house in Soladevanahally police station area, we arrested Shahad Mohammed, Azmal, Ajin KG Verghese and Nitin Mohan. All are from Kerala and we will arrest their contacts as well. They are involved in the dark web mafia," Bommai said.

He said the peddlers were using post offices and couriers for their business.

"I'll speak to the central government, the home ministry and postal department, and other issues related to this mafia. Canada, Netherlands, and other nations are also involved in this mafia," said the state home minister.

"People from influential backgrounds are also involved in this mafia, but our objective is zero tolerance. We are using our intelligence. Drugs are coming from other states like AP, Goa, and other states," he said.
Bommai said he was personally addressing this case and appealed for support from parents, schools and colleges.

"I'm addressing this issue personally because it's important to curb the drug mafia. I need support from schools and college managements and parents. I'll also call college and hostel managements before colleges start. We will make managements responsible," he said.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: Several ministers staying at the Bengaluru resort had been emotionally pressurised to leave the Congress party, said Congress leader Jitu Patwari on Thursday after he was rescued by party leader DK Shivakumar from getting arrested due to the scuffle that had broken out at Embassy Boulevard here.

"We had received information that one of the MLAs, Manoj Chaudhary, staying at the Boulevard wanted his father to bring him back home," Patwari told reporters.

He said, "We had accompanied Manoj's father to the resort but the moment we entered the restaurant at the resort, some miscreants took away Manoj to some other unknown place," Patwari told reporters.

"Meanwhile, we (Lakhan Singh and Jitu Patwari) were manhandled and taken to the police station," he added.

Patwari said that the police had started the process of arresting them but Shivakumar came to their rescue and stopped their arrest.

He further said, "The police manhandled us even though we tried to talk to them in a very calm manner."

"If the MLAs giving resignation was their decision then why is the BJP not allowing them to contact their families," the MP said.

He further said that Jyotiraditya Scindia would soon become a minister but "why are the other ministers being made scapegoats."

Earlier in the day, a Congress leader in Madhya Pradesh had said that if action on the assaulters of its two leaders is not taken then the matter will be taken to the court.
