After fight with husband, woman files case: NIA steps in to probe ‘forced conversion’

Ahmedabad, Jan 29: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has decided to probe into the claims of forced conversion of a Gujarat-born Malayali woman, who married a Muslim man from Kerala and after a fight with him accused him of trying to take sell her to terrorists in Syria.

Based on the complaint lodged by Akshara Bose (25), who had moved the Kerala High Court last year against her husband Mohammad Riyaz, a native of Thalassery, the NIA registered the case on Sunday, January 28. The case, which was earlier handled by the police, will now be handled by the NIA.

The NIA had, in November last year, said that it was ready to take up the investigation into the case if the HC wanted. The agency is already probing the Hadiya case, wherein the Supreme Court had recently ruled that the investigation could go as planned, except that her marriage to Shafin Jahan would not be probed.

What’s the Case?

Bose, born into a Hindu Ezhava family, is originally a native of Pathanamthitta in Kerala and resides in Gujarat along with her family. In her petition to the High Court, she had said that she met Mohammed Riyas while she was studying in Bengaluru.

She accused Riyas of forcing her to have sexual relations with him and recording the act. He then blackmailed her into converting to Islam and marrying him, after which Bose took the name Aisha, she told the court.

She further alleged that he forged her Aadhaar card, got the marriage registered, and also forced her to listen to sermons by Dr Zakir Naik. She also accused her husband’s mother of colluding with him and alleged that they received gifts, in cash and kind, for converting a non-Muslim. She said she was also forced into wearing a veil and supporting ISIS.

Bose had gone to Saudi Arabia too along with Riyas in 2017. However, in her complaint, she alleged that she was forced to go to Saudi Arabia, where she was confined to a rented flat and was told that they would move her to Syria to “sell her to ISIS terrorists.”

She claimed that she managed to get in touch with her parents somehow, who got her a ticket back to Ahmedabad. She also alleged that there was a threat from Riyas and an activist of the Popular Front in Kerala.

However, those who know the couple closely claim that it was a love marriage and not a forced conversation. The woman decided to take revenge against him husband after a fight with him in Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, sources from NIA said that the agency would probe into all allegations made by the woman including forced conversion and attempt to sell her to terrorists.

In her complaint , she included everything to tarnish muslims... forced conversion, family & community support for conversion, flow of money for conversions.. forced sex, recording it to blackmail... forced to watch Zakir naik videos (to prove him as terrorist), connecting to popular front (to expand propaganda)... etc   . entire story seems hatched by Sangh parivaar or NIA itself for sangh parivaar....

Fantastic Cock & Bull story. It reminds me of CHANDAMAMA monthly story book I used to read half a century back. Instead of sneking into Muslims bed rooms, had these people searched few Ashrams in the country, thousands of sisters would have been saved and billions of wealth unearthed and loads of illegal arms & amuntions would have been seized. What a pathetic state of our great nation today!!!

Bengaluru, May 5: The movement of migrant labourers from Karnataka to other states has stopped temporarily, as few North Indian states are yet to give consent.

Revenue Minister R Ashok said that the state government will convince labourers to stay back and ensure free food supply at their camps. "Even if we allow them to travel, they will be quarantined for 14 days as soon as they reach their native states.

The labourers don't know about this and some states have not yet given permission for their return," Revenue Minister R Ashok said.

According to sources in CMO, the decision to convince the workers to stay back came after several major projects - both government and private - were affected by the mass migration of labourers to their native districts and states.

Ashok, along with S Suresh Kumar, Primary and Secondary Education minister and head of the group of ministers focusing on migrant workers, also visited labourers who had gathered demanding that they be allowed to return.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa will chair a meeting tomorrow and instruct builders under CREDAI to pay pending wages of labourers, provide food supply and ensure their safety, Ashok said, adding that all construction work by BBMP will also be taken up to help the labourers.

Kochi/Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 7: The Managing Director of Muthoot Finance company was injured after miscreants allegedly pelted his car with stones here on Tuesday morning following which one person was reportedly taken into custody.

George Alexander Muthoot, who suffered head injury has been admitted to a private hospital, police said.

A section of employees have been agitating against the Muthoot management over dismissal of 160 staff from the company's 43 branches across the state in December.

The protest is being held under the aegis of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU).

While the Muthoot management alleged that "CITU goons" were behind the attack that occurred at around 9 am in front of IG office here, the union leaders have maintained that they have no role in the incident.

Reacting to the incident, Labour Minister T P Ramakrishnan said he does not think any of the Muthoot employees were behind the attack.

"The employees were protesting peacefully. Violence is not part of their protest. Even now, in today's incident, I don't think any of the Muthoot employees attacked the MD.

However, it was the management of the company which had always provoked them by not implementing the decisions taken at conciliatory meetings," the Minister said.

If the management was prepared to change its stance, all the issues would be resolved, he said.

CITU leader Ananthavattom Anandan told reporters that they do not believe in such type of violent mode of agitation.

An official of the Confederation of Indian Industries Kerala chapter condemned the incident, saying "it is a matter of great concern".

Well known businessman and founder chairman and CEO of V-Guard Industries, Kochouseph Chittilappilly condemned the attack and said it was unfortunate that such incidents still continue in the state.

“Earlier also such incidents have taken palace. It's highly condemnable. The union leaders will now claim that the incident took place without their knowledge. But without the backing of union, such incidents will never happen,” he said.

Kerala-headquartered Muthoot Finance is the largest gold financing company in India.

Bengaluru, Jun 26: Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar on Thursday suggested that the cost of building and installing a new statue of Nada Prabhu Kempegowda in the Bengaluru airport should be borne by Kempegowda international airport (KIAL).

Shivakumar wrote to Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and welcomed the decision of erecting a statute of Bengaluru founder Kempegowda at KIAL but he also suggested that the chief minister should not spend state government's money on this.

He said that the Karnataka government has done many favours to airport authority earlier.
