Sirsi, Feb 3: Renowned Kannada poet and former professor K S Nissar Ahmed was on Friday honoured with the ‘Pampa Award’ at simple programme at Banavasi near Sirsi in Uttar Kannada district during the ‘Kadambotsava’.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ahmed stressed the need for efforts from all quarters to save Kannada and said that the survival of Kannada language would be difficult if apathy towards use of the language continued.

Referring to the history of Kannada language he said Kannada was one among ancient languages and it had been ranked 19th among the most ancient languages.

“While Kannada has a rich heritage, the younger generation, however, is not at all aware of it and there is a sense of inferiority among our youths when they come across people of other languages” he said, emphasising the need to be proud of one’s language and heritage.

He clarified that there was no need to oppose other languages to ensure the survival of Kannada but there was need to give priority to Kannada language.

The poet expressed regret over the present day politics, which he said had become more divisive in nature. “Karnataka was a garden of peace comprising people of all faiths. But now efforts are being made to divide the people on the lines of caste, religion and party”, he said.

Thanking the selection committee for choosing him for the award, Mr. Nissar Ahmed said he was honoured to receive it, that too in the land of poet Pampa.

Earlier Minister for Large and Medium Industries and district-in-charge R.V. Deshpande presented the award to the senior poet and felicitated him in the presence of various dignitaries and senior officials. Mr. Deshpande listed out the various measures taken by the State government to promote art and culture and also listed out various developmental activities undertaken in the district and State.

Bengaluru, Jan 19: Two college students have been arrested for allegedly spiking their female friend's drink and sexually assaulting her in Bengaluru.

The 19-year-old victim filed a complaint against the two accused, following which they were nabbed. In her complaint, the victim said that the two friends persuaded her to accompany them in a party where one of them allegedly spiked her drink.

Feeling unwell, she wanted to return to her PG, but the two managed to convince her to stay back at their place, where they allegedly sexually assaulted her.

"After some time one of my friends gave me something to drink and I vomited. I felt uneasy and decided to return to my PG. However, he forced me to go to his house stating that I was not in a condition to go to my PG. He convinced me saying that I can go home in the morning. I did not suspect any foul-play as he was a friend," the victim was quoted as saying by the publication.

Mangaluru, Feb 27: An utterly unprofessional thief, who fell asleep after breaking into a house, was caught by the house owner and handed over to the police in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada.

The hilarious incident took place on Wednesday in the one-storey, tiled-roof house owned by Sudarshan at Ullas Junction under the limits of Uppinangady police station.

The thief, who gained entry into the house by removing the roof-tiles, has been identified as Anil Sahani, a native of Bihar’s Majipur district. He was snoring on the sofa with a set of keys clutched in his hand when the house owner woke up in the morning.

The house owner, who was sure that the thief was drunk, woke him up by hitting him with a stick and then handed him over to the police.

According to police, the thief was tired after removing the tiles on Tuesday night and hence he decided to take a nap soon after entering the house.

He grabbed a bunch of keys kept near the TV stand and then lied down on the sofa. He woke up only when the house owner hit him with a stick the next morning.
