Bengaluru, Feb 3: On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit here,a war of words ensued today between ruling Congress and opposition BJP over the latter's national president Amit Shah's claim that the Centre gave Karnataka more than Rs three lakh crore under various schemes.

Addressing a press conference, Congress working president Dinesh Gundu Rao and Karnataka agriculture minister Krishna Byregowda termed Amit Shahs statements "as nothing but lies." "BJP has only.... half-truths to offer to the people of Karnataka.

The money given to the state has been likened to largesse.BJP speaks as though the money it devolves to states is a gift or a handout, while in reality all states are constitutionally entitled to this amount," said Rao.

He alleged that Shah and other BJP leaders have been employing 'less than respectful tactics' in a bid to see the Lotus bloom in the south once again. "The people of Karnataka have seen the manner in which the BJP government plundered the state during its term from 2009 to 2013," he added. Byregowda said Karnataka received Rs 10,533 crore less than what it is entitled for.

"We know that you (Prime Minister) wont give us Rs 3 lakh crore tomorrow... at least you have to release the shortfall in the grants towards Karnataka," he said. He said this money was Karnataka's right and that the shortfall was a dent in the state's grants. "You not only have to issue a clarification on this issue, you also have to release the grants.

This will make us accept that you have respect for the Constitution," he added. Reacting to this, BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa hit out at Congress, saying that the party was lying with regard to grants in order to hide its 'inability'.

He said the NDA government increased the Central grants, including those by the 14th Finance Commission,by 42 per cent. "The Modi government doubled the central grants allocated by the previous UPA government," Yeddyurappa said.

A 53-year-old Indian worker in the UAE has missed a special repatriation flight after he dozed off at the Dubai International Airport, a media report said.

P Shajahan, who worked as a storekeeper in Abu Dhabi, was supposed to fly to Thiruvananthapuram on the Emirates jumbo jet chartered by the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC) Dubai, Gulf News reported.

It was the first-ever jumbo jet chartered for repatriation.

Shajahan, who had paid 1,100 dirham (USD 300) for the ticket, said that he did not sleep on the previous night as he kept on waiting for the confirmation of his ticket for the jumbo jet flying 427 stranded Indians to Kerala, it said.

He reached the airport early in the morning and after finishing the check-in procedures and rapid test, he reached the waiting area of the boarding gate at Terminal 3 around 2 PM local time, the report said.

“I sat away from most of the others. But I fell asleep after 4.30 PM,” he said.

S Nizamudeen Kollam, who coordinated the charter flight, said that the airline officials could not trace Shajahan when the flight was to take off.

“He woke up and called us after the flight left. It is sad that he missed the flight, which was the first-ever jumbo jet chartered for repatriation. We are now trying to send him on another Emirates flight that we are chartering on Saturday,” Kollam said.

Since Shajahan did not have any money, Jasimkhan Kallambalam, organising secretary of KMCC Thiruvananthapuram, went to the airport to meet him on Friday.

“Since his visa was cancelled, he could not come out of the airport. He had only eaten the snacks in the kit KMCC had given. We managed to give him some cash for buying food through KMCC volunteer Alamsha Latheef,” Kallambalam said.

In March, another Indian expat had fallen asleep in the same terminal and missed the last flight home before flights were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was stranded here for over 50 days before getting repatriated.

Ahmedabad/New Delhi, Jan 22: Interpol has issued a Blue Corner Notice seeking information about controversial self-styled godman Nithyananda, who fled the country amid allegations of wrongful confinement of children, officials said on Wednesday.

A Blue Corner Notice is issued by the international police cooperation body to collect additional information from its member countries about a person's identity, location or activities in relation to a crime.

The Gujarat Police had sent a request to the CBI, the nodal body for Interpol matters in India, seeking a Blue Corner Notice against Nithyananda, the officials said.

"Interpol issued the Blue Corner Notice against the controversial godman this month," Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ahmedabad (rural), K T Kamariya, told PTI.

The police said they are now working to get Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice, a global arrest warrant, against Nithyananda.

The Gujarat Police had registered an FIR against Nithyananda after two girls went missing from his ashram in Ahmedabad.

He was charged with kidnapping and wrongful confinement of children to make them collect donations from followers to run his ashram.

Nithyananda was earlier declared wanted by the Gujarat Police.

While police continue to look for him, reports emerged in December last year that he has created a Hindu nation, Kailaasa, with its own flag and political setup, on an island near Ecuador.
