Mangaluru, Mar 12: Expressing severe disappointment over the “wholesale acquittal” of all the accused in the Amnesia Pub Attack of 2009,the Citizens Forum for Mangalore Development said that the court verdict was entirely unexpected when the citizens had been hoping for the strictest punishment for the guilty as per law.

In a release issued here, Forum Coordinator Vidya Dinker and Core Group Members Dilip Vas Naik and Mahesh Nayak demanded that the state government take measures to immediately appeal the present judgment and make every effort possible to prove the guilt of the accused and ensure legitimate punishment for them.

“Amnesia Pub Attack had made international headlines due to the graphic violence and the world had seen live TV footage of the brutal attack on young girls. Newspapers had carried photographs of the goons beating up the victims. It is distressing to note than despite such strong video and photographic evidence and a trial lasting nearly 10 years the prosecution has failed to bring the guilty parties to justice,” the release said.

The Amnesia Pub Attack marked the onset of immoral policing in Mangaluru which has destroyed the foundations of civic freedoms in this region and allowed criminal culture to flourish and terrorise the young and citizens in general, with political backing, it added.

The Forum also warned that the present judicial outcome of acquittal of all the accused would certainly send a wrong message to society that criminals can get away scot free. It will undermine public confidence in the law of the land and its ability to protect our civic rights. Young citizens who are picking up the courage to speak out and complain against immoral goons will be pushed into silence again.

“It has often been reported that in many media interactions, Sri Rama Sene’s Pramod Mutalik had himself made statements accepting the guilt of the accused. Today, after being acquitted, he has been brazen enough to celebrate his ‘victory’ by distributing sweets and bursting crackers. Media reports indicate that here again he has made statements tantamount to accepting guilt for the pub attack. All this only makes a mockery of the criminal justice system,” the Forum said while urging the state government to pursue the matter seriously and immediately take steps to strive and reverse the judgment by addressing all the loopholes and shortcomings of the case.

New Delhi, Mar 20: An official of South Western Railway has been suspended for "hiding" her son, who returned from Germany and later tested positive for coronavirus.

The youth has been hiding at a railway guest house in Bengaluru, officials said on Friday.

"She (the railway official) not only failed to inform authorities about her son's return from Germany, but also endangered the lives of others by lodging him in a railway rest house near the main Bangalore railway station," railway spokesperson E Vijaya said.

The Assistant Personnel Officer (Traffic) has been suspended, Vijaya said.

The 25-year-old man, who came from Germany via Spain and was instructed to be in home quarantine after he landed at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on March 13, later tested positive for Covid-19 on March 18.

"She virtually hid her son to protect her family but endangered all of us," a South Western Railway official said.

New Delhi, Mar 2: The bloodthirsty arsonists allegedly hired by pro-CAA politicians in the capital of India to target Muslims, did not spare even the house of a Muslim leader of BJP.

Akhtar Raza, the BJP’s minority cell vice-president for the Delhi Northeast district, is now not in a position to share his pain with anyone.

Even the police hadn’t come to his rescue, when the mob raising “Jai Sri Ram” slogans burnt down his house at Bhagirathi Vihar Nalla Road in northeast Delhi last week.

“They were chanting slogans. Around 7pm, they started throwing stones at us. I called for police help. But the police asked me to leave. We managed to flee before they burnt my house and destroyed everything,” Raza, who returned today to witness the destruction, told media persons.

“Those who attacked us were not locals. They were outsiders. They managed to identify and burn down all the 19 houses belonging to Muslims in this lane,” Raza said.

Apart from all the belongings in the house of Raza, the arsonists also have burnt down six vehicles belonging to his family.

Raza is sad that no one from BJP contacted him after the violence even though he has been serving the party and promoting its ideology for past five years. “No party leader contacted me. There was no phone call. There was no relief or special treatment or anything,” Raza said.

Interestingly, Raza is still indentifies himself as a BJP leader. “I belonged to BJP. I may continue in the party,” he said.

The locality remained tense on Sunday too. On Monday, several groups distributed relief materials among people who had queued up to collect them. In front of Raza’s house is a lane from which several bodies of innocent Muslims have been recovered.

On June 17 our state will be taking part in it at around 3 pm," Mr Sudhakar said in response to a question.

Speaking to reporters at Kalaburagi, he said the current situation would be discussed in that meeting. Mr Sudhakar said the Prime Minister has repeatedly been holding such video conferencing exercises to take stock of the situation and plan for the future.

"There will not be a lockdown anymore according to me," he added.
