BJP is the greater evil: Prashant Bhushan tells voters in poll-bound Karnataka

Bengaluru, Mar 26: Human rights activist and Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan has warned the people of Karnataka that the “greater evil” for them is the Bharatiya Janata Party.

“Though the choice before voters in Karnataka is between the devil and the deep sea, the BJP is a far greater evil,” he told presspersons here on Sunday after addressing a gathering on political corruption and dangers to democracy.

“The [Assembly] elections are approaching and money power is going to play a major role. There will be a politicians-bureaucracy-contractors nexus that will bring in the money,” he said.

“D.K. Shivakumar is there, and the likes of (Ashok) Kheny have joined the Congress, which has ignored the corruption cases against them. The BJP has B.S. Yeddyurappa as its chief ministerial candidate and leader of the poll campaign, despite the cases in the Lokayukta and the Central Bureau of Investigation. The Reddy brothers are behind the BJP. The parties have all been partners in crime, but the people are stuck,” he said.

Opining that more transparency was required in funding of parties and candidates, he said that unless there is transparency, electoral reforms were not possible.

“When we speak of transparency in funding political parties, electoral bonds have become instruments of changing black money to white. They are bearer bonds with no name or serial number. Bonds are given to a party and they cash it in. No one knows where the money came from or even if it is a clear kickback on a deal,” he said.

Mr. Bhushan urged all democratic forces to join in advocating for transparent, corruption-free governance ahead of the elections.

Bengaluru, Jul 29: A day after Congress staged a nationwide 'Save Democracy' protest, Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy slammed Congress for "dividing" the political parties and "buying MLAs" and questioned their "democratic behaviour" to lure Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLAs who supported them.

Kumaraswamy, in a media statement, said, "Is it a democratic behaviour to lure MLAs of other parties through political shenanigans and later merging with them?"

"Congress is an expert in dividing political parties and purchase of MLAs," said Kumaraswamy adding, "If you are dividing the like-minded party MLAs through deceit, who would support you?"

He alleged that the term "horse trade" in politics came to be used because of Congress.

Congress had tied to divide the Janata Dal (Secular) in 2004. To this, he added, "To avoid the party being hijacked by the Congress, I had to oust the Congress-JD(S) coalition government through a political coup."

Kumaraswamy further accused, "Haven't the Congress who is making a big noise about the purchase of MLAs divided the JD(S) in the past? Is it not a fact that for the sake of one Rajya Sabha seat, the Congress government in Karnataka purchased eight JD(S) MLAs?"

Both -- Congress and BJP -- are "criminals" in purchase matter, he added.

Rajasthan Congress is in turmoil after simmering differences between Sachin Pilot and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot came out in the open. Pilot was removed as the Deputy Chief Minister and the state unit chief of Congress.

The Congress has accused the BJP of indulging in horse-trading to bring down the Gehlot government. The BJP has rejected the allegations.

Bengaluru, Jun 14: Karnataka's Health Department has shut down four city clinics for not reporting Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases, which are COVID symptoms, an official said on Sunday.

"We have shut four Bengaluru clinics for not reporting ILI and SARI cases," a health official told IANS.

The clinics are Namma Clinic at Sahakaranagar, Panchamukhi Specialty Clinic at Peenya 2nd Stage, Mathru Chaya Clinic at Sudhama Nagar in Bommanahalli and Nayak Hospital in Gayathri Nagar.

"We gave notice to 17 clinics for not reporting ILI and SARI medical conditions in patients. Out of the 17, 13 reverted that they did not do and will start reporting," said the official.

However, the four named clinics did not revert leading to their shutdown.

According to the official, the clinics failed to adhere to the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1987, Disaster Management Act, 2005 and others.

All medical facilities and hospitals should report all patients with ILI and SARI symptoms as many COVID positive cases have them as underlying conditions.
