New Delhi, Apr 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will observe a day-long fast on Thursday along with all members of Parliament (MPs) of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to protest against the recent washout of the second half of the budget session of Parliament.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has blamed the opposition led by Congress party for the washout. The budget session was the worst session in terms of productivity in the last 18 years.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi will observe a day-long fast on 12 April but he will continue with his official engagements. He will continue to clear the files and hold regular meetings,” said a senior BJP leader aware of the plan. BJP president Amit Shah will hold a meeting in Hubli, Karnataka, to protest against the state’s Congress government.

Speaking at centenary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi’s fast at Champaran in Bihar on Tuesday, Modi alleged that opposition parties were creating hurdles for the NDA while it was working for the upliftment of financially weaker sections.

“From the streets to Parliament, roadblocks are being created in the government’s work. While the government is working towards uniting people and their hearts, some opponents are working towards breaking up society,” said Modi.

Without naming any political party, Modi said there are people who don’t want any improvement in the condition of the poor as they feel it would become difficult to mislead financially weaker sections if the government succeeds in its efforts to uplift the poor.

Modi also reiterated the need to end the menace of caste, religious differences and corruption, and said that these issues were affecting society and weakening the country.

“We have to eradicate the problems affecting our society which are weakening the country. We have to build a new India which is free from corruption, caste differences and religious divide. The entire country is one big family, we have to work together, only then we would be able to pay respects to the people who fought for the independence of the country,” Modi said.

Modi’s remarks come at a time when the country has witnessed protests by Dalits against the alleged dilution of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Several organizations working for the rights of Dalits organized a nationwide protest on 2 April.

The Prime Minister also praised the Bihar government under chief minister Nitish Kumar and said the state government would never compromise on corruption and would continue making honest efforts for the betterment of the people.

New Delhi, Jan 13: Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, has fired around 50 of its India executives as part of its restructuring in the country, three sources with direct knowledge said.

The move underscores the struggles Walmart has faced in expanding its wholesale business in India. The Bentonville, Arkansas based company currently operates 28 wholesale stores where it sells goods to small shopkeepers, and not to retail consumers.

The firings mostly affected executives in the company’s real estate division because the growth in the wholesale model has not been that robust, two of the sources said.

“It’s happening because focus is shifting to e-commerce rather than physical (stores),” said one source, who declined to be identified as the decision is not public.

Walmart did not respond to a request for comment.

Walmart has placed bold bets on India’s e-commerce sector. In 2018, it paid $16 billion to acquire a majority stake in India’s online marketplace Flipkart, in its biggest global acquisition.

The second source added that while Walmart could slow down the pace of opening new wholesale stores, the focus will increasingly be on boosting sales through business-to-business and retail e-commerce.

Some of the executives were sacked last week and more could be let go on Monday, two sources said.

In a statement to India’s Economic Times newspaper, which first reported the news, Walmart said it was always looking for ways to operate more effectively and that “this requires us to review our corporate structure to ensure that we are organized in the right way to best meet the needs of our members.”

Walmart has around 600 staff in its India head office out of a total of around 5,300 nationally, one of the sources said.

New Delhi, Jul 1: Jet fuel or ATF price on Wednesday was hiked by 7.5 per cent, the third increase in a month, while petrol and diesel rates were unchanged for the second day in a row.

Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) price was hiked by Rs 2,922.94 per kilolitre (kl), or 7.48 per cent, to Rs 41,992.81 per kl in the national capital, according to a price notification by state-owned oil marketing companies.

This is the third straight increase in ATF prices in a month. Rates were hiked by a record 56.6 per cent (Rs 12,126.75 per kl) on June 1, followed by Rs 5,494.5 per kl (16.3 per cent) increase on June 16.

Simultaneously, non-subsidised cooking gas LPG rates were increased by Re 1 to Rs 594 per 14.2-kg cylinder in the national capital. Prices were up by Rs 4 in other metros mostly because of different local sales tax or VAT rate.

On the other hand, petrol and diesel prices were unchanged for the second day in a row.

This, after diesel rates scaled a new high after prices were hiked 22 times in just over three weeks.

In Delhi, a litre of petrol comes for Rs 80.43 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs 80.53 per litre.

Rates vary from state to state depending on the incidence of local sales tax or VAT.

While the diesel price had been hiked on 22 occasions since June 7, petrol price had been raised on 21 occasions.

The cumulative increase since the oil companies started the cycle on June 7 totals to Rs 9.17 for petrol and Rs 11.14 for diesel.

Beijing, Mar 6: World health officials have warned that countries are not taking the coronavirus crisis seriously enough, as outbreaks surged across Europe and in the United States where medical workers sounded warnings over a "disturbing" lack of hospital preparedness.

The World Health Organization warned Thursday that a "long list" of countries were not showing "the level of political commitment" needed to "match the level of the threat we all face".

"This is not a drill," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters.

"This epidemic is a threat for every country, rich and poor."

Tedros called on the heads of government in every country to take charge of the response and "coordinate all sectors", rather than leaving it to health ministries.

What is needed, he said, is "aggressive preparedness."
