BJP, JD(S) join hands to defeat Siddaramaiah in his home district

Bengaluru, Apr 24: The BJP and the JD(S) appear to have joined forces to take on Chief Minister Siddaramaiah-led Congress in almost all constituencies in Mysuru district and not just Chamundeshwari.

The two Opposition parties have decided to help each other to defeat the Congress in the district, which currently holds eight out the 11 Assembly segments. While the JD(S) had bagged three seats in the 2013 elections, the BJP could not even garner one seat. But, this does not negate the saffron party’s presence in the district.

The party, in fact, gained momentum in the district, especially after BJP state chief B S Yeddyurappa’s son B Y Vijayendra decided to contest against Siddaramaiah’s son Dr Yathindra from Varuna seat.

Though Vijayendra’s fate hangs in balance of now, the JD(S) has entered into a tacit understanding with the BJP to ensure the latter’s victory in Varuna.

The party has even gone to the extent of changing its candidate to facilitate the BJP’s victory. The JD(S) which had fielded Abhishek, now wants to field a Muslim candidate, Sajid.

“The decision has been taken to ensure Yathindra’s defeat in Varuna. The JD(S) had not strengthened the constituency. So, it was decided to help the BJP,” said party sources.

The JD(S) move is in reciprocation to the BJP’s support to its candidate G T Devegowda in the Vokkaliga-dominant Chamundeshwari, from where Siddaramaiah has filed his nomination. The BJP had earlier wanted to field Hemanth Gowda, a Vokkaliga from there. After it came to fore that Hemanth Gowda would eat into a sizable chunk of Vokkaliga votes, the BJP fielded a Brahim, Gopal Rao, to facilitate the JD(S) candidate’s victory.

The BJP also changed its candidate in K R Nagar. It had earlier thought of fielding Hosahalli Venkatesh (a Vokkaliga), but later decided to field Shwetha Gopal, to help JD(S) candidate and sitting MLA Sa Ra Mahesh. Else, there would have been a close contest between Mahesh and Congress candidate D Ravishankar.

In Periyapatna, the BJP wanted to field Ganesh (who had taken 28,000 votes in the previous polls), but has now fielded S Manjunath, to help JD(S) candidate K Mahadev. As Manjunath is a Kuruba, the two parties hope that his candidature will cut into the Kuruba votes, denting Congress MLA K Venkatesh’s prospects. The segment is dominated by Kurubas and Vokkaligas.

The same strategy has been adopted in Hunsur, H D Kote and Chamaraja segments, where the BJP had fielded “weak” candidates.

The JD(S) for itts part has decided to help the BJP in Krishnaraja, where the saffron party has fielded S A Ramdas. Krishnaraja is currently held by Congress MLA M K Somashekar.

Bengaluru, Mar 3: Bengaluru mayor Gautam Kumar on Tuesday said that the decision to ban protests in front of Town Hall was made by the council and not only by him.

"The decision to ban the protest in front of the Town Hall was made by the entire council and not only my decision. Also, the things which are approved by the councillor are also read by the ruling party leaders," Bengaluru mayor told media.

"Still it is the discretion of the Commissioner to take a call after the council also. As of now, we have banned any protests in front of Town Hall," he added.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders staged a protest against Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Mayor Gautam Kumar and BJP at Council BBMP building against the decision.

"If people will start protesting, it will badly affect the traffic of the city," said Kumar, while commenting on the protest. If they want to talk about the matter, let us have a healthy discussion. I don't have a problem with and I don't think the ruling party has a problem too," he added.

On Sunday, pro-Kannada activist and former MLA Vatal Nagraj staged a protest in front of Sir KP Puttanna Chetty Town Hall (Bangalore Town Hall) against the decision taken by Bengaluru mayor.

Talking to reporters, Nagraj had said: "He does not know the history of the Town Hall. It is a historic building and protests can be staged there."

"Mayor's decision is against Bengaluru's tradition and culture, that's why we are condemning it and are protesting against this decision. We will not allow Mayor's programs in Bengaluru and he will be shown black flags", he added.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: After pro-Kannada outfits called for a state-wide bandh today, the police are on high-alert to avoid any untoward incidents.

The dawn to dusk bandh was called demanding implementation of Sarojini Mahishi report which recommended certain percentage of jobs to Kannadigas in private & public sector companies.

There is no official holiday declared for schools and colleges. Besides, all government institutions and private establishments are open.

But, in some parts of Karnataka, autorickshaws and taxis, including Ola and Uber stayed off the roads.

Even though the bandh is unlikely to hit normal life in coastal Karnataka, stones were pelted on a Tirupati-Mangaluru bus in Farangipet.

Bhuj, Feb 14: In a horrifying incident, as many as 68 undergraduate girls were paraded through their college into the restroom and forced to individually remove their undergarments to prove that they were not menstruating.

This shameful exercise was conducted at Shri Sahjanand Girls’ Institute (SSGI) in Gujarat’s Bhuj under the supervision of principal and other teachers.

It all began after the hostel rector complained to the principal that some of the inmates had been violating the Hindu religious norms specifically for menstruating females.

According to the sect’s norms, menstruating females are barred from entering the temple and kitchen. They are even forbidden from touching other students. However, the hostel administration reportedly complained to principal Rita Raninga that some girls who were having their periods not just mingled with other hostel inmates, but also entered the kitchen and ventured near the temple on the premises.

“It was sheer mental torture and we don’t have words to describe it,” a student who underwent the traumatic experience said, adding that there were total 68 girls who were forced to pass through the test.

“The hostel administration levelled this allegation and insulted us on Wednesday. On Thursday, when we were attending lectures, rector Anjaliben called the principal and complained about this. We were forced to leave our classrooms and queue up outside in the passage. The principal abused and insulted us, asking which of us were having our periods. Two of us who were menstruating stepped aside,” said another victim.

“Despite this, we were all taken to the washroom. There, female teachers asked us to individually remove our undergarments so they could check if we were menstruating,” she added.

Another teenage undergraduate said, “We come from farflung villages. The college campus houses a school that runs classes from Class 1to 12. They provide hostel facilities to the school students. The college does not have its own hostel. We live with the school-kids in their hostel.”

She added, “The principal, hostel rector and the trustees harass us regularly over the issue of menstruation. We are punished for having periods. This happens even if we follow their religious rules. They made us remove our undergarments because they thought some of us were lying about not having periods, and mingling with the others against rules. But the humiliation meted out to us on Thursday was the last straw. When we protested against this, trustee Pravin Pindoria told us that we could take legal action if we wanted but we would have to first leave the hostel. He also forced the students to sign a letter saying nothing happened in college. But enough is enough.”

Kutch University authorities have, meanwhile, swung into action and a five-member team including in-charge vice-chancellor, Darshna Dholakia, and two other senior female professors visited the college on Thursday. “We will speak to the students and the college authority and later initiate appropriate action based on the findings,” Dholakia said.

Run by followers of Swaminarayan Mandir, the college was set up in 2012 but moved into a new building on the premises of Shree Swaminarayan Kanya Mandir in 2014. The college which offers BCom, BA and BSc courses has about 1,500 students of which 68, who come from remote villages, stay in the hostel on campus. The college is known for its pro-Hindutva stance.
