Cattle trader’s murder: Arrest of saffron chauvinists hurts Shobha, says it was ‘needless’

Udupi, Jun 4: The arrest of policemen and saffron activists in connection with the murder of a Muslim cattle trader in Udupi district has deeply hurt BJP leader and Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje.

Husainabba, 62-year-old a cattle trader from Jokatte, was attacked by a gang of Bajrang Dal members last week near Perdoor in Udupi in front of the policemen and then stuffed him into a police jeep. Husainabba had breathed his last in the jeep. The policemen and Bajrang Dal activists had dumped his body to cover up the case. However, the top cop managed to crack the case and 10 persons including three policemen were arrested in the case.

When people hailed the competence of Udupi Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi, who did not hesitate to arrest the men in khaki for assisting Bajrang Dal activists to cover up the murder case, Shobha along with a BJP delegation met him and urged him not to arrest members of Hindu organisations needlessly.

Lalaji R. Mendon, B.M. Sukumar Shetty, Raghupati Bhat, MLAs, Dinakar Babu, President of Zilla Panchayat, Udaykumar Shetty, Mattar Ratnakar Hegde, T.V. Hegde, Gurme Suresh Shetty, BJP leaders, were part of the delegation.

Shobha said that there was rampant theft of cattle and their illegal transportation in the villages coming under the Perdoor-Hiriyadka belt and hence police should not go tough on Bajrang Dal activists, who according to her are protectors of cows.

“Even in the present Husianabba case, 13 head of cattle, 12 calves and one cow, were being transported in a multi-utility vehicle. Hence, the police should first take steps to check cattle theft and their illegal transportation,” she said.

The MP said that the saffron activists had first given information to the Hiriyadka police. It was the responsibility of the police to have seen that the activists did not gather at Shenarbettu near Perdoor. Even if they had gathered, the police should have dispersed them.

The police should have ensured that there was no assault on cattle transporters. Instead, the police had used the Hindutva activist, Suresh Mendon, for their own purpose. And, now, Mendon had been made an accused in the case, she said.

Shobha said that Sub-Inspector of Police Rafiq should be removed from the police investigation team in this case and also such other communally sensitive cases as there were allegations that he behaved rudely with people. The police should stop linking Hindutva activists with this case unnecessarily. It should not resort to frightening activists of Hindu organisations. The party would hold a protest over this issue here on Wednesday, she said.

Apr 23: An FIR has been registered in Nagpur against Republic TV channel's editor Arnab Goswami for promoting social disharmony and accusing Congress President Sonia Gandhi of orchestrating the Palghar lynching.

Three Mumbai residents, including two sadhus, who were on their way to Silvassa on April 16, were lynched by a mob in Gadakchinchale village of Palghar district on the suspicion that they were thieves. Nagpur Police Commissioner B K Upadhyaya said they received a complaint which was turned into an FIR at Sadar police station.

DCP Vinita Sahu said Goswami has been booked under sections 117 (abetting commission of offence by the public or by more than 10 persons), 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy), 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 153 (B) (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration), 295 (A) (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 290-A (public nuisance in cases not otherwise provided for), 500 (defamation), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the ipc. Another FIR was filed against him in Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

In a statement condemning Goswami, Maharashtra Congress said the killing has been wrongly given a communal angle despite ample proof of the contrary. "At a time when country is fighting against coronavirus pandemic, it is very unfortunate that a section of media as well as politicians are trying to create social unrest... [and] spread racial and religious hatred in society. Goswami has tried to create misogyny against women in the society. He made an outrageous remark against the Congress president on a live TV programme. This is completely unethical journalism and we publicly protest it. We believe in brotherhood and cannot accept such animosity. This will be dangerous for the unity and integrity of the country (sic)," it said.

Bengaluru, Jun 27: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Saturday emphasised on giving a new dimension to the city by strengthening the infrastructure and improving various other sectors including health and housing.

He was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the 108-feet-tall bronze statue of Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bengaluru, at the Kempegowda International Airport near here. The statue would be built at a cost of Rs 66 crore in one-and-half years.

Yediyurappa said Bengaluru has earned the fame of Garden City and Silicon Valley of India. Noting that the state capital was one of the fastest-growing cities in the world and internationally acclaimed hub of information technology and biotechnology, he said, "We need to give a new dimension to this city and strengthen the infrastructure. We have to focus on health, housing, pollution control, traffic management. Our government has taken various measures to develop the city," the chief minister said.

On Kempe Gowda, Yediyurappa said though the city did not have a perennial river, he built hundreds of lakes and interconnected them. His water management reflects on his foresightedness, he added.

"Kempambudhi, Dharmambudhi, Sampaniram and Halasuru lake are among the major lakes gifted to the people of Bengaluru. He had set up the markets called Chickpet, Akkipet, Balepet, Kumbarpet, are still the major trade hubs," Yediyurappa said.

Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, Union Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi, deputy chief ministers Govind Karjol, Dr C N Ashwath Narayan, Laxman Savadi and many other ministers were present on the occasion. The event was organised on the 511th birth anniversary of Kempe Gowda. Kempe Gowda was a chieftain of Vijayanagara dynasty who founded Bengaluru around 550 years ago.
