Udupi, Jun 6: Condemning the arrest of the accused in connection with the alleged murder of an elderly Muslim cattle trader in the district last week, saffron outfits led by Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday staged a protest in front of the DC’s office at Manipal, here.

Addressing the protesters, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Sobha Karandlaje held H D Kumaraswamy-led coalition government responsible for the arrests and urged the police not to touch the saffron activists.

“If the Forensic Science Laboratory report confirms that Husainabba died of heart attack, then police cannot treat it as a murder case. Till they get the report, the police shouldn’t have arrested the ‘innocent’ gau rakshaks,” she said.

She went on to claim that the saffron activists never take law into their hands. “The cattle transporters themselves damaged the vehicle and put the blame on gau rakshaks,” she added.

Speaking on the occasion, K Raghupati Bhat, Udupi MLA, hit out at police for giving more importance to the death of a cattle transporter than the death of two cows.

“Two of the 13 cattle being transported by Husainabba and others were found dead. Many people were arrested for the death of Husainabba, but no one was arrested for the death of two cows,” he lamented.

He suggested that Husainabba death case should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which is under the control of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union government.

The police have arrested 10 persons in connection with the attack on cattle transporters near Perdoor in Udupi district that resulted in the death of Husainabba, a resident of Jokatte in Mangaluru. Among the arrested seven VHP-Bajrang Dal chauvinists and three others are their associates in the police department including a sub inspector.

62-year-old Husainabba was reportedly found dead under mysterious circumstances near Perdoor on May 30. During investigation it came to light that he died in police jeep after attack by Bajrang Dal chauvinists.

Kalaburagi, Apr 25: In order to make people aware about the precautionary steps required to be taken in order to contain the spread of coronavirus, Muslim clerics here are making announcements from mosques after 'Azaan' urging people to follow the government guidelines to keep infection at bay.

Speaking to news agency, Ateeq Ur Rahman Ashrafi, All India Imams Council Karnataka's state president, said, "Under our council, there are around 80 mosques and after Azaan we are spreading awareness about COVID-19. I also appeal to other mosques to make such announcements and follow government guidelines."

This year, due to the spread of the virus, Muslim clerics have requested people to offer prayers inside their homes and avoid any kind of social gathering.

The country is under lockdown till May 3. All religious places including mosques have been closed to stop the transmission of the highly contagious virus.

Karwar, Jun 3: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert, predicting thundershowers and heavy rainfall over north interior Karnataka, coastal Dakshina Kannada and Udupi over the next three days.

With Cyclone Nisarga hitting the Uttara Kannada coast on Tuesday,  parts of coastal Karnataka received heavy rainfall. Gusty winds tore through the coastal towns, as the sea too turned violent with rough waves smashing the shore.

The alert was issued with the advancement of Nisarga from east-central Arabian Sea to north Maharashtra, and adjoining south Gujarat coast. “Though it does not cover Karnataka, the range of cyclonic winds is very big and reaches north interior Karnataka also.

So an alert has been called out,” CS Patil, director in-charge, IMD, Bengaluru, said. The weather department has forecast a severe cyclonic storm and then a depression. Patil said formation of systems is a common factor before the onset of the monsoon and they help in its advancement.

“Cyclone Nisarga is helping in the quick advancement of the southwest monsoon to Karnataka, and the monsoon is likely to arrive before the scheduled date as conditions are favourable,” he added.

Bengaluru, Mar 2: Killing an Indian porcupine and inviting his TikTok followers to view it proved costly for a 25-year-old man from Kalaburagi. Forest department officials tracked him down and arrested him on Sunday morning.

Manjunath Biryalhissa, a resident of Jewargi taluk, was famous for his various TikTok videos and for lifting heavy stones in his village and neighbouring areas.

According to forest officials, on Friday, Manjunath and his friends caught a porcupine in Sindagi range, Vijayapura and stoned it to death. Later, they fried and cooked it. Manjunath then made an 18-second video, where he spoke about the porcupine hunt and slaughter, besides inviting his followers to like the video and join him in the feast.

The video was on TikTok and Facebook. Wildlife activists who found the video alerted forest department officials.

“Porcupine comes under schedule four of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Keeping this video as evidence we were able to trace him through his Facebook account, where he had shared details of his hometown,” said forest officials.
