Mangaluru, Jun 27: A youth was killed and three others suffered injuries after a speeding car rammed into two stationary vehicles at Kannur on the outskirts of the city today.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Farooq (32), local resident. He and two other local residents – Junaid and Sarfaraz – were sitting inside the car parked near the mosque at Kannur, when the tragedy took place.

It was raining heavily. A newly purchased Polo car coming from BC Road rammed into the parked car after hitting an auto-rickshaw. The impact was such that both the cars fell into the roadside drain.

Farooq, who was in the back seat of the car, lost his life while others sustained injuries. Haneef, who was driving the Polo car also sustained injuries.

Both the cars and rickshaw were damaged. A case has been registered at Mangaluru South police station and investigations are on.

Mangaluru, Apr 4: About 20,000 quintal boiled rice has been distributed among the ration card holders through Public Distribution System, District-in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said here on Saturday.

As people in the district prefer boiled rice over white rice, the government has given approval for distributing boiled rice. From next month, only boiled rice will be distributed in the district at fair price shops.

In the last two days, rice has been distributed among 61,302 cardholders in the district.

Hubli, Mar 9: A Hubli court on Monday rejected the bail application of three Kashmiri students, who were booked for sedition, after their video allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans went viral.

The plea was filed under Section 439 of CrPC.

This comes after the Hubli Bar Association earlier withdrew its resolution against representing the three Kashmiri students and said that advocates who wish to appear for them can approach Dharwad Principal District Court to file bail plea.

The three students are Basit Ashik Sophi (19), Talib Majid (19) and Amir Mohiuddin (23). They were booked under sedition charges for raising pro-Pakistan slogan in a video shared on social media.

They were earlier transferred to Belgaum Hindalga jail from Hubli sub-jail and the case, registered in Gokul Road police station, was also transferred to the rural police station because the video was recorded in the college hostel room, which is in its jurisdiction.

Bengaluru, May 28: A thousand government schools in Karnataka are set to get Englishmedium sections from this academic year (2020-21). These institutions will function in both English and Kannada medium.

The decision was taken by primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar and officials of the education department at a meeting on Wednesday.

Suresh Kumar said dualmedium will help improve the standard of schools and enable their development. The poorest of the poor spend almost 40% of their income on their children’s education in private schools. With the introduction of dual-medium, the government hopes such families will be able to save their earnings, he said. These schools will impart lessons in both English and Kannada. They will also provide textbooks in both languages.

‘Kannada must for all’

The meeting reviewed implementation of the compulsory Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015. Officials from the Kannada Development Authority were present at the meeting who claimed that some private schools have failed to implement the Act properly.

“Action will be taken against such institutions. Every child studying in schools across the state must learn Kannada,” Kumar said at the meeting.
