2,000 saints, monks from across India to attend Dharma Sansad in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru, Jul 11: A national level Dharma Sansad (Hindu religious assembly) will be held at Kanyadi Srirama Kshetra near Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada district on September 3.

Brahmananda Saraswati, the head priest of the Kshetra told media persons here that around 2,000 saints, monks and religious leaders from across the country would participate in the event.

He said that the Dharma Sansad was being held to mark the celebration of the 10th year of Brahmananda Saraswati’s ascension as Peetadhipati of the Kshetra.

The event will be inaugurated by Dharmadhikari of Shrikshetra Dharmastala D. Veerandra Heggade. Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar Mutt, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, the former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and a few Union Ministers will participate, he said.

The Peetadhipati said that sadhus and sants from different parts of the country will come to Kanyadi on September 2. They will take part in the Shoba Yatra on September 3 at 9 a.m.

The Dharma Samsad will be held at 11 a.m. He said that the Dharma Sansad will discuss the formation of the “Rashtriya Loka Kalyan Manch” that will deliberate issues concerning religion and give suggestions to governments.

Mangaluru, Mar 30: Indira Canteens and Kadiri Manjunatha Temple here have started distributing food packets to the poor, stranded labours, destitute and needy in the wake of the COVID-19 lockdown.

''We have prepared over 2,000 food packets in the morning. The same number will be prepared in the afternoon and night for distribution," said Prabhakar Shetty from Indira canteen at Urwastore in Mangaluru on Monday.

"The MCC teams come and collect food for distribution among the poor, beggars and destitute," he added.

Mangaluru, May 31: The bus services by private operators in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts will begin from tomorrow (June 1) with 15 per cent hike in the fares, Canara Bus Owners Association president Rajavarma Ballal said on Sunday.

In a statement issued here, he said that the members of the Association have appealed for a 3-month tax break. ''We have received tax breaks for 2 months and have demanded for an additional month again,'' he added.

He said that the government has agreed to a 15 per cent hike in bus fares. All the passes issued already will be converted into cash cards and no discounts will be available till the end of the COVID-19 crisis.

An added attraction in private buses will be the option of paying travel fares through smart cards.

According to Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators Association president Dilraj Alva, 50 per cent of 325 private city buses will resume their services on Monday. It also meant that 50 per cent of buses will operate on the allotted routes.

The smart cards (or travel cards called Chalo Card) will not be introduced on all routes at a time. They will be introduced in a phased manner covering all routes from Monday.

 Mangaluru, July 18: The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi recorded a total of 346 covid positive cases in last 24 hours. Dakshina Kannada recorded 4 new deaths.

While DK recorded 237 positive cases, neighbouring Udupi saw 109 people testing positive. It may be recalled that DK and Udupi had reported a combined record spurt of 347 Covid-19 cases for a single day on Thursday. 

Dakshina Kannada 

As many as 26,368 samples have been sent for tests so far. Among them 23,096 have turned out negative, and 3,311 people have received positive report. Currently there are 1,848 active cases while 1,387 persons have recovered. 109 patients were discharged from Wenlock as well as private hospitals today. Including today’s four deaths, 75 people have succumbed to covid. Among them 12 are from other districts.

The patients whose deaths were reported today are a 74-year-old female from Puttur who was also suffering from heart disease and asthma, a 67-year-old male who was suffering from pneumonia and was on ventilator, and two females aged 49 and 61 from Mangaluru who suffered cardiac arrest.

Udupi

With 109 new cases, the total number of covid positive cases reported in the district mounted to 2088. Among new cases 58 belong to Udupi taluk, 40 are from Kundapur and 11 from Karkala. 

A total of 24,382 samples have been collected so far, including 524 on Saturday, out of which 17 are coronavirus suspects and 317 are COVID contacts. Out of them, 21,757 samples have turned out to be negative, including 292 on Saturday, and 537 reports are awaited.

As many as 1,586 patients have been discharged so far including 43 on Saturday, and 492 cases are currently active. Ten deaths have occurred so far. One positive case has been transferred to Dakshina Kannada.
