'Alliance for LS polls depends on how Cong treats us'

Bengaluru, Jul 25: Entering into a pre-poll alliance with the Congress for the Lok Sabha polls will depend on how the JD(S) is treated, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said Tuesday.

“The agenda is there,” he told reporters when asked about the JD(S) forging a pre-poll alliance with the Congress. “But let’s see how the Congress will treat the JD(S),” he said.

This remark comes a day after a section of Congress exerted pressure on the party’s leadership to take the Hassan or Mandya Lok Sabha seats, which are JD(S) strongholds. The Hassan seat is currently held by JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda whereas Mandya was represented by C S Puttaraju of the JD(S), until he won the Assembly polls.

While AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka K C Venugopal has already announced that the Congress and the JD(S) will fight the Lok Sabha polls together, the state leaders have maintained that not much has progressed in terms of finalising the modalities of the pre-poll alliance. A section of Congress leaders thinks allying with the JD(S) may not be in the party’s best interests.

Kumaraswamy, however, was positive on the effort that is underway to stitch an anti-BJP alliance - the Mahagathbandhan. “That will continue,” he said.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Dinesh Gundu Rao, meanwhile, said that the priority for the party is to think about how it can win maximum number of seats in the Lok Sabha election. Karnataka has 28 seats.

Rao also reiterated the warning that no leader should wash dirty linen in public. “The party will not accept personal attacks against leaders and criticism of the Congress-JD(S) coalition,” Rao said, justifying the show-cause notice issued to senior leaders K B Koliwad and K N Rajanna.

Rao clarified that former chief minister Siddaramaiah is not against the Congress wanting to fight the Lok Sabha polls with the JD(S). “The high command has already decided. Also, Siddaramaiah is not opposed to the coalition that we have,” he stated.

New Delhi, Mar 19: Senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes on Wednesday extolled the virtues of 'gaumutra' and shared an anecdote about a man claiming to have cured his cancer by drinking cow urine to drive his point home.

Participating in a debate in Rajya Sabha on two bills for setting up national commissions for homoeopathy and Indian systems of medicine, the former Union minister said, "My extreme friend Jairam Ramesh pulls my leg, when I talk of 'gaumutra'."

Sharing an anecdote, Fernandes said once during a visit to an ashram near Meerut he had met a person who claimed to have cured his cancer by drinking 'gaumutra'.

Many BJP leaders have earlier spoken about the healing power of 'gaumutra'. The Congress has reacted sharply to such remarks.

He also praised the virtues of the Indian systems of medicine. He said when he had severe pain in knee joint and doctors had suggested for replacement surgery. However, he refused and started doing 'Vajrasana'.

"I started Vajrasana, practising yoga, and today I am able to do wrestling without any difficulty," the septuagenarian leader said.

"When (former) prime minister (Atal Bihari) Vajypee ji had a knee surgery, I thought if I had known him earlier, I would have definitely gone to him and ask him to follow 'Vajrasan' and it could have been cured," he said.

He also claimed to have met a person in US aged around 104 years and moving swiftly as a young man.

"Yoga is our wealth. If you practise yoga, may be our budget cost of health can be reduced by 50 per cent. It's way of life," he said.

"Our own Indian systems of medicine will provide a lot of reliefs even before going to a doctor," he said.

Though Fernandes supported the bills but raised objection over the exclusion of yoga and naturopathy.

"I would urge the minister either to amend the bill or bring an assurance that it will bring a separate legislation to cover yoga and naturopathy," he said.

Mangaluru, Jan 13: A truck parked at the site of protest against the new citizenship law and National Register of Citizens (NRC) at Deralakatte on the outskirts of the city was charred down to ashes after it was set on fire by miscreants, police said here on Monday.

Police said that Deralakatte Citizenship Protection Committee had organised a protest rally against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) here on Sunday. After the rally concluded, a few unidentified miscreants set the vehicle on fire.

The incident resulted in chaos, causing panic among the locals who informed the police immediately.

Condemning the incident, the local unit of Popular Front of India has claimed that the incident was an attempt by saffronist goons to disrupt peace and trigger communal riot in the region. It has urged the police to nab the accused immediately without yielding to any political pressure.

Bengaluru, Jun 29: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah along with Congress leaders on Monday rode a bicycle from his residence to Minsk Square to protest against the hike in fuel prices.

KPCC President DK Shivakumar was also seen riding a bicycle along with other members of the Congress party to Minsk Square where the party staged the protest.

During the protest, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar along with party leaders carried a bike on their shoulders.

"We are carrying out our duty today. At the time of the UPA government's rule, when there was any hike in fuel prices, several BJP leaders had made bold statements. It is ironic that today, at the time of this COVID-19 pandemic, even despite the price of barrels falling, they have increased fuel prices," said Shivakumar.

"In Delhi, diesel prices have exceeded petrol prices. We must protest against this. The DCP can file whatever case he wants to. Despite several cases against us, we have never been shaken up. They are inconveniencing people and causing the people to burn in hell. These people must be protected," he added.

With the hike in fuel prices, the petrol prices stand at Rs 83.04/litre (increase by Rs 0.05), and the diesel prices stand at Rs 76.58/litre (increase by Rs 0.13) in Bengaluru, according to a price notification of state oil marketing companies.

The Congress has termed the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel as "unjust" and "thoughtless", and urged the Central government to roll back the increase with immediate effect and pass on the benefit of low oil prices directly to the people.
