Youth held on charge of sexually assaulting student after barging into hostel

Mangaluru, Aug 11: The Dakshina Kannada district police have arrested a person on charge of barging into a hostel and sexually assaulting a college student nearly twenty days ago.

According to B.R. Ravikanthe Gowda, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada, on July 20, the accused had entered the B.Sc. Nursing women’s hostel of K.R. Hospital in Mysuru after threatening the security guard with a knife.

The accused sexually assaulted a hostel inmate and fled after other inmates raised an alarm. A case was registered at Devaraja police station of Mysuru in this regard.

On Friday, a team of cops from the Uppinangady police station arrested Mohammed Altaf, 23, son of Abdul Razak, a resident of Ajilamogaru in Bantwal taluk. He was allegedly hiding, disguised as a worker at a plantation in Patrame village of Belthangady taluk. The SP said he would be handed over to the Mysuru police soon.

Chitradurga,  Aug 2: Said to be 110-years-old, a grand old woman Siddamma was discharged on Saturday from a COVID Hospital in Chitradurga after recovering from the novel coronavirus.

According to Dr Basavaraj, District Surgeon, Chitradurga, the woman had tested positive for the disease on July 27.

After her recovery, the frail woman dressed in a sari was seen being wheeled out from the hospital.

As many as 5,172 new COVID-19 cases and 98 deaths were reported in Karnataka on Saturday, taking the state's count of coronavirus cases to 1,29,287.

The active cases in the state now stand at 73,219 while 53,648 people have been discharged.

"5,172 new COVID-19 cases and 98 deaths reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, taking total cases to 1,29,287 including 53,648 discharges and 2,412 deaths. 

The number of active cases stands at 73,219," said State Health Department.

So far, a total of 2,412 people have succumbed to the virus in the State.

Mangaluru, Jan 1: On the first day of 2020, Bajpe Police became somewhat of a Guardian Angel for a college student, who was wandering around the city in the wee hours of Wednesday, convincing and escorting him to his home safely, after coming to know about his residence.

According to Bajpe Police Probationary Sub-Inspector Anita Nikkam and Police Officer Devappa Hosamani, they noticed a youth, hailing from Handelu in Todaru and studying in a college at Moodbidri, wandering at around 0245 hrs.

When asked about his whereabouts, the boy did not respond initially. However, police managed to collect his address and his mother's phone number after half an hour of interrogation.

Mangaluru, Feb 20: A wild tusker was spotted in Kukke Subrahmanya town here, in the early hours of Thursday.

Range Forest Officer (RFO), Kukke Subrahmanya Tyagaraj said that it was seen walking from Kashi Kattte in the town to Nuchila around 0530 hours without creating any havoc.

The same elephant was spotted some days ago at Harihara, a small village town near Kukke Subrahmanya.

It has been roaming around in the forests nearby for some time now. So far, it had not caused disturbance to people nor had it damaged any property, Mr. Tyagaraj said.

Kukke Subrahmanya is on the foot of the Western Ghats.
