Bengaluru, Sept 4: Karnataka is likely to get seven new ministers, while 30 legislators of the Congress and the JD (S) will be adjusted as chairmen of top corporations and boards in the state, according to party leaders.

The Karnataka state cabinet will be expanded by the third week of September to its full strength of 34, with the addition of seven new ministers, JDS Secretary general Danish Ali said.

“While there will be six new faces from the Congress in the cabinet, one of the JDS legislators will also get a ministerial berth.

“Besides, 30 new legislators, including 10 from the JDS, would be adjusted as chairmen of key boards and corporations in the state,” Ali, who is also the convener of the coordination committee, told PTI.

The Karnataka cabinet currently has a strength of 27, including 11 from the JDS and 16 from Congress.

Sources said that after completion of 100 days of the government, resentment was brewing among the legislators over ministerial berths and other key posts in the state that are still vacant.

There has been talk of cabinet expansion for many days but the issue was resolved after a meeting of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy with Congress chief Rahul Gandhi last week.

The cabinet expansion and naming of the chairmen of boards and corporations will take place simultaneously in the third week of September, Siddaramaiah has said after the coordination committee's third meeting since the formation of the coalition government.

The delay has fuelled dissent among senior leaders of both the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular), who failed to get a ministerial berth earlier.

This will be the first cabinet expansion of the coalition state government.

The vacancies in other boards and corporations would be filled later, Ali said. There are a total of 94 boards and corporations in the state.

Meanwhile, the sources also said that three leaders would be nominated to the legislative council after vacancies had arisen as some members were elected to the state assembly.

Besides, a nomination of an Anglo-Indian member is also to be made in the state legislative council.

The sources said the Congress is likely to bag two of the three nominations to the legislative council.

Bengaluru, Feb 8: The BJP on Saturday drew flak on Twitter for taking a swipe at Muslim women who appear to be standing in a line to vote in Delhi's assembly polls. ""Kaagaz Nahi Dikayenge Hum" ! ! ! Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during NPR exercise (sic)," the party's Karnataka Twitter handle posted using the hashtag #DelhiPolls2020.

The video, which appears to have been taken from one of the polling booths in Delhi on Saturday, shows burqa-clad women flashing their voter ID cards. While the threatening tone of the tweet is unmissable, the tweet contradicts the government's statement that no person needs to submit any documents during the house-to-house survey for updating the National Population Register (NPR) and that information provided by individuals would be accepted and recorded.

The tweet has added to the prevailing confusion regarding the NPR exercise in the country.

The NPR is a list of "usual residents" of the country. In 2010, the data for NPR was collected along with the house-listing phase of the Census of India 2011. The data was updated in 2015 by conducting a door-to-door survey.

Currently, it has been decided to update the NPR along with the house-listing phase of Census 2021 during April to September 2020 in all the states/union territories except Assam.

Most of the opposition parties see NPR as a prelude to the contentious National Register of Citizens (NRC), which has been opposed by even NDA allies like the JD(U). The NPR questionnaire asked details like the birthplace of parents. In combination with the recently amended citizenship law, protesters fear that the registry might be eventually used for NRC.

As a result, people, predominantly Muslims, have hit the streets as India witnesses one of the most widespread civilian unrest of recent times.

Mangaluru, Jun 14: In a fresh case of vigilante attack, a cattle trader was tied to a buffalo-laden vehicle and thrashed by the miscreants belonging to Bajrang Dal in the city today.

The victim has been identified as Mohammad Haneef Guddemane (34), a resident of Jokatte village on the outskirts of the city.

The attack took place in the early morning near Infosys office at Urva, when Haneef was transporting his four buffalos to Kudroli slaughter house.

The miscreants continued to thrash him until the local police reached spot. Based on the complaint of ‘illegal cattle transportation’ by the Bajrang Dal, the police took the victim to custody and also seized the buffalos.

The police also took the victim to hospital and subjected him to covid test before producing him before a local judge.

While the Bajrang Dal members lodged complaint of illegal transpiration against the victim, the victim showed all the records of the cattle and lodged a counter complaint against the attackers.

It is learnt that Haneef had purchased 10 cattle from Haveri district and sold six among them. He was transporting remaining four buffalos to Kudroli slaughter house.
