Mangaluru, Sept 14: The construction of the proposed barrage dam across River Netravati between Arekala and Adyar, about 5kms downstream Thumbe vented dam, can be completed within two years after the completion of tender process, according to minister for minor irrigation C S Puttaraju.

Puttaraju, who along with minister for urban development and housing U T Khader inspect the proposed dam construction site, told media persons that those who will lose their lands due to the dam will be provided suitable compensation.

Mr Khader said that the dam will be constructed under the Pashchima Vahini scheme at an estimated cost of Rs 174 crore. It will be a barrage cum road project, he said, adding that a 7 meter wide road will also be constructed atop the dam.

The dam is expected to meet the drinking water requirement of people of Ullal and surrounding areas in Mangaluru City constituency represented by Mr Khader.

A survey has already been conducted for the new dam and a rough estimate is ready. A detailed project report will be prepared and the process of floating tenders will begin after the proposal gets the cabinet approval. Later, the supply network and other related works will be planned based on the requirement, he said.

The two ministers also convened a meeting involving people's representatives from the coastal districts on the implementation of Paschimavahini Scheme at deputy commissioner's office.

You people are ready to give compensation to people. What about animals, birds and insects. Those are inevitable to earth. It is inevitable for keeping natural equillibrium. Dont show developments by destroying nature

Mangaluru, Feb 13: After pro-Kannada outfits called for a state-wide bandh today, the police are on high-alert to avoid any untoward incidents.

The dawn to dusk bandh was called demanding implementation of Sarojini Mahishi report which recommended certain percentage of jobs to Kannadigas in private & public sector companies.

There is no official holiday declared for schools and colleges. Besides, all government institutions and private establishments are open.

But, in some parts of Karnataka, autorickshaws and taxis, including Ola and Uber stayed off the roads.

Even though the bandh is unlikely to hit normal life in coastal Karnataka, stones were pelted on a Tirupati-Mangaluru bus in Farangipet.

Bengaluru, Jul 16: Karnataka Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar on Thursday paid a surprise visit to the C V Raman Hospital in Bengaluru and urged the administration to follow COVID-19 guidelines properly. He also took stock of the hospital's preparedness to fight the deadly virus.

The minister noticed a number of flaws and warned the hospital to go strictly by the guidelines. He saw that despite 15 high-flow oxygen beds lay vacant, only two patients were admitted. He then asked the hospital to send asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic patients to COVID-19 care centres so that beds were available to those who need these.

"Doctors' profession is a noble one and in a situation like this everyone should perform their duty with utmost humanity and compassion. During this crisis, we should all be kind and empathetic," the minister said. He also ordered the suspension of two officials for not following the guidelines and not giving the right treatment to patients.

He noticed that the hospital lab collected less number of swabs and instructed them to collect a minimum of 500 swabs per day. Pointing out the under-utilised beds and ICUs, he observed that because of such negligence by officials, the government is being blamed despite working day and night for the past four-five months.
During this visit, the minister also interacted with the patients through video call and enquired about the services provided to them by the hospital.

"Surprise visits will continue. I will be in touch with every lab and get the right number of tests done on a daily basis," the minister said while speaking to the media.

He also urged the people who have recovered from COVID-19 to donate their plasma to save other lives, adding that donors will receive a reward of Rs 5000 as a token of appreciation.
