Muslims have all the right to demand Cong LS ticket from DK; I am with them: Poojary

Mangaluru, Oct 27: Former Union Minister B Janrdhana Poojary, who has created a record in Dakshina Kannada by losing the Lok Sabha polls for five times, this time has openly endorsed the demand of Muslim Central Committee that Congress should field a Muslim candidate from this constituency.

The 81-year-old Congress veteran, who is suffering from multiple ailments, recently had stated that he would not hesitate o contest the 2019 polls from Dakshina Kannada if high command wills. However, in a U-turn, he stated that the Congress should not ignore the demand of the Muslims.

The U-turn comes days after a meeting of the Muslim Central Committee resolved to urge the Congress to field a Muslim candidate from Dakshina Kannada parliamentary constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. It also decided to constitute an action committee to submit a memorandum to the Congress, and to rope in influential ministers such as U T Khader and B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan, to prevail upon the party on this issue.

“I wholeheartedly endorse their demand. They should continue to pressurise the party high command. I am with them,” Mr Poojary was quoted as saying by a Kannada news paper.

He also said that Muslims have been demanding ticket since 2009 Lok Sabha polls when he was given the ticket. “In last Lok Sabha polls (2014) too they wanted ticket. But they could not get as I was chosen for the ticket through internal polls. Now it’s time for them to intensify their struggle,” he said.

Mangaluru, Apr 20: The Dakshina Kannada district administration had declared certain areas in the district as containment zones after COVID-19 positive cases were detected from there.

A seal down has been declared in these zones, completely banning all movement of the people including leaving their houses.

In Ajjavara, Sullia taluk a one-kilometre containment zone has been set up on April 19.

The zone stretches from Ankotimar Road and includes Forest agriculture land and the residences of Savera and Achar.

Bengaluru, Mar 12: Days after a video of an elephant being shot in Bandipur National Park went viral on social media, officials said that they have removed a staffer and initiated action against an employee of the Karnataka Forest Department in the matter.

According to officials, the incident took place on March 7.

"We have removed Rahim, temporary staffer, and initiated action against Umesh, a permanent employee of the Karnataka Forest Department, after an internal enquiry," Bandipur field director T Balchandra said.

While Rahim is said to have shot the charging elephant, Umesh reportedly made the video and shared it on social media.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.
