Bengaluru, Nov 4: Regardless of opposition from the Sangh Parivar, the chief minister H D Kumaraswamy led Karnataka state government is determined to celebrate Tipu Jayanti on November 10. With this the fight in the name of India’s legendary freedom fighter is expected to escalate ahead of the bypoll results.

"We have decided to celebrate Tipu Jayanti on November 10 in consultation with chief minister H D Kumaraswamy. BJP will be held responsible if there is any kind of untoward incident in the state on that day," said Kannada and culture minister Jayamala, following a meeting with food and civil supplies minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan here on Saturday.

Tipu Jayanti celebrations had caused a stir in the state since 2015, with clashes erupting in districts. In 2015, two people were killed in Madikeri when a group taking out a procession was stalled by VHP activists.

Last year, a (PIL) was filed in the Karnataka High Court, challenging the October 24, 2017, circular issued by the department of Kannada and culture for Tipu Jayanti celebrations throughout the state.

The HC had asked the state to file its objections to the PIL before November 2018.

However, the state failed to file objections, forcing the court to impose a fine of Rs 1,000 on the state government. The court will hear the case next on November 9.

The opposition BJP, Tipu Jayanti Virodhi Horatta Samiti and some right-wing organisations have already threatened to launch a protest to oppose the celebrations. They had earlier petitioned Kumaraswamy, who had also opposed the Jayanti celebrations while in the opposition, during the previous Congress regime.

Meanwhile, some pro-Tipu Jayanti activists have also taken objection to Jayamala's statement that the BJP will be held accountable for any violence during Tipu Jayanti. "The state government and minister should ensure proper security for people to prevent any untoward incident. Her helpless statement clearly indicates that the government is anticipating violence but has no clue how to prevent it," they said.

Davanagere, Apr 26: Amid the national lockdown imposed by the Centre to check the spread of coronavirus, social distancing norms were flouted as BJP MLA from Honnali -- MP Renukacharya -- held a meeting of ASHA workers on Thursday.

The workers were present in large numbers and no distance of at least one metre between the workers was maintained during the meeting.

However, the workers were seen wearing masks at the meeting but violating the norms of social distancing.

Social distancing is one of the measures that can help people avoid contracting the highly contagious coronavirus.

According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Karnataka has a total of 489 positive COVID-19 cases of which, 153 patients have recovered and 18 patients have died due to the deadly virus.

Bengaluru, Jun 26: Karnataka's Commercial Taxes Department has sealed off an undeclared warehouse with imported goods worth Rs 4 crore in Bengaluru and found 60 GST registrations linked to a Chinese national from Wuhan.

The tax department officials found 25,446 China-made electronic and fast-moving consumer goods worth Rs 4 crore stored in the warehouse which was not declared to the tax authorities.

Commissioner of Commercial Taxes MS Srikar said in a statement that the officers noticed that one person from Wuhan City, China, got the premises in Bengaluru on lease.

They also found that about 60 registrations (both central and state jurisdictions) under the GST Act, in the name of a number of persons for online trading of imported China-made goods, had a single address which was vacant.

Most of the registrations were found irregular in the filing of returns and payment of tax. Majority of the firms either filed nil returns or were non-filers. The registration data showed that one business was registered in 2017-18, 43 in 2018-19, 14 in 2019-20 and two in 2020-21. Most of the 60 firms were private limited companies and 24 persons were interchangeably directors in 58 firms.

At the time of raid, neither the lessee, the Chinese national, nor any of the other 59 registered taxable persons were available at the business premises and no one came forward to participate in the proceedings in spite of providing sufficient time.

It is learnt that the Chinese national is operating the business from Wuhan City since January 2020 with the assistance of some of his agents/employees in Bengaluru.

It has also been learnt that multiple registrations are being taken for a better rating on e-commerce platforms, Srikar said.

The raids were led by Nitesh K Patil, Additional Commissioner, Enforcement, South Zone.
The Commercial Taxes Department is closely watching the genuineness of newly registered persons and conducting post-registration verification visits.

Any registration taken with mala fide intention of evading taxes will be dealt with seriously, the Commissioner said.
