Shanthi Prakashana’s Kannada stall a huge hit at Sharjah International Book Fair

Sharjah (UAE), Nov 5: When the 37th iteration of the Sharjah International Book Fair was opened on October 31, 2018, hundreds of Karnataka expatriates made a beeline for the book stall of Shanthi Prakashana.

It is for the third consecutive year, the Mangaluru-based leading Islamic publishing house setting up a stall in the 11-day event, considered to be the world’s third largest book fair.

At the inaugural ceremony of Shanthi Prakashana book stall, the president and the COO of Global operation of UAE Exchange Sudheer Kumar Shetty said it was the only one Kannada book publisher out of more than 1000 publishers from the worldwide participating in the book fair.

“It is really proud moment for every NRI Kannadigas who lives in UAE. More over the digital media are popular these days so the readers are facing towards the social and digital media, but the real taste of reading through books and print media does not get through digital,” he said.

Mohammed Ali Uchil, President of Bearys welfare Forum-Abu Dhabi, released the new title ‘Qurán Ondu Chintane’ written by Khadeeja Nusrath Abu Dhabi. “Shanthi Prakashana is a value based publishing house. It is proud moment for All Kannadigas who loves literature,” said Mr Uchil.

Muhammad Kunhi, Manager of Shanthi Prakashana said: “Mutual understanding between followers of different faiths will end hatred and misconceptions. Promoting amity, upholding values and spreading peace is the goal of Shanthi Prakashana through literatures.”

Encouraging people to read more good books, he said when people spend more time on social media, the relationships in real life will be affected.

Master Nooh recited the verses from holy Quran and convener of Shanthi Prakashana book stall at Sharjah book fair Abdul Salam Deralakatte read out the translation in kannada. Mr Abdul Khader Kukkaje compered the program.

Social worker Abdul Qadeer, kannada writer Irshad Moodbidri, Noor Ashfak Karkala, Ismail Bengre, Advocate Shamsuddeen from Kerala, Moideen Tumkoor, were present.

Shanthi Prakashana publishes books on different aspects of Islam such as social, political, economical and cultural, and theological. Till date it has come up with more than 280 titles. It also has three mobile bookstalls roaming all over Karnataka to spread the message of peace, human values and establish atmosphere of unity and brotherhood.

Tumakuru, Jan 4: Three people were burnt alive and four others sustained injuries in a head-on collision between a four-wheeler (Omni van) and a private bus on NH-206 near Doddaguni in Gubbi taluk of Tumakuru district in the early hours of Saturday.

Police said that Narasamma’s relatives and villagers were taking her to a hospital in Nittur when a private bus, heading to Shivamogga from Bengaluru, collided with the van on the tank bund road near Doddguni around 0200 hrs. The two vehicles caught fire and Vasanthkumar, Ramaiah and Narasamma were burnt alive in the van. The passengers in the private bus escaped unhurt.

The deceased were identified as Vasanthkumar (23), Ramaiah (62) and Narsamma (60) of N Hosahalli in Gubbi taluk, whereas the injured were identified as Ravikumar (23), Radhamani (30), Narasimha Murthy (40) and Gowramma (28).

Bengaluru, Mar 14: Infosys carried out evacuation at one of its satellite offices here on Friday after an employee came in contact with a suspected case of COVID-19, according to the company.

"We have taken a decision to evacuate one of our satellite buildings in Bengaluru as a precautionary measure, as one of our employees had been in contact with an individual with suspected COVID-19," the company said in its statement.

"Employees have been directed to work from home, and there is no impact on our client deliverables as a result of this temporary evacuation," it added.

On the other hand, Google also informed media on Friday that an employee at its Bengaluru office has tested positive for the COVID-19 and the firm has directed all its employees in that office to work from home as a precautionary measure.

"We can confirm that an employee from our Bangalore office has been diagnosed with COVID-19. They were in one of our Bangalore offices for a few hours before developing any symptoms. The employee has been on quarantine since then," Google had said in a statement. The search engine giant has asked colleagues who were in close contact with the employee to quarantine themselves and monitor their health.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.

Coronavirus, which originated in the Wuhan city of China, has so far spread to more than 100 countries infecting over 1,20,000 people. India has reported two deaths and 82 confirmed cases of the deadly coronavirus.

New Delhi, Jan 12: In a shocking revelation, one unemployed person committed suicide every hour during 2018 when a total of 1,34,516 suicides, including 92,114 male and 42,391 female, were reported in the country, NCRB's "Suicide in India 2018" says.

The latest data, issued by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which comes under Ministry of Home Affairs, last week reveals that a total of 12,936 unemployed persons committed suicide in 2018, which accounted for 9.6 per cent of the total suicides, and were of aged below 18 years to above 60 years.

Those below 18 years include 31 males and nine females while those between 18 and 30 years comprise 1,240 male and 180 female. A total of 868 male and 95 female were aged between 30 and 45 years. A number of 237 males and 21 females were aged between 45 and 60 years while 2,431 males and 310 females were above 60 years.

Of the total suicides by unemployed persons, males are 10,687 while the females are 2,249.

The highest number of suicides - 12.3 per cent - committed by unemployed persons were in Kerala (1,585 out of 12,936 suicides), 12.2 per cent in Tamil Nadu (1,579), 9.7 per cent in Maharashtra (1,260 suicides), 8.5 per cent in Karnataka (1,094 suicides) and 7 per cent in Uttar Pradesh (902 suicides).

"Each suicide is a personal tragedy that prematurely takes the life of an individual and has a continuing ripple effect, dramatically affecting the lives of families, friends and communities. Every year, more than 1 lakh people commit suicide in our country. There are various causes of suicides like professional/career problems, sense of isolation, abuse, violence, family problems, mental disorders, addiction to alcohol, financial loss, chronic pain etc," says the NCRB adding it collects data on suicides from police recorded suicide cases.

As per the NCRB, rate of suicides has been calculated using projected population for the non-census years whereas for 2011, the population of the Population Census 2011 was used.

The NCRB data says that a total of 1,34,516 suicides were reported in the country during 2018 showing an increase of 3.6 per cent in comparison to 2017 and the rate of suicides has increased by 0.3 during 2018 over 2017.

Government servants accounted for 1.3 per cent (1,707 out of 1,34,516) of the total suicide victims as compared to 6.1 per cent (8,246 out of 1,34,516) of total victims from Private Sector Enterprises.

Employees from Public Sector Undertakings formed 1.5 per cent (2,022 out of 1,34,516) of the total suicide victims, whereas students and unemployed victims accounted for 7.6 per (10,159 victims) of total suicides. Self-employed category accounted for 9.8 per cent of total suicide victims (13,149 out of 1,34,516).

A total of 10,349 persons involved in farming sector (consisting of 5,763 farmers and cultivators and 4,586 agricultural labourers) have committed suicide during 2018, accounting for 7.7 per cent of total suicides victims (1,34,516) in the country.

A total of 11 transgenders have committed suicide in which three were daily wage earners, one each were 'professionals and salaried persons' and 'unemployed persons' while six falls under 'Other Persons'.
