Bengaluru/Belagavi, Dec 21: The Karnataka state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has started the process of putting in place a poll calendar of events for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The issue was discussed at a meeting of the party’s legislators and district units’ presidents held in Belagavi on Thursday.

As per plans, BJP supremo Amit Shah will kick-start the party State unit’s preparations for the Lok Sabha elections by addressing six to eight conventions of leaders from booth-level committee clusters in January.

According to a senior leader, each of the proposed convention will be attended by 5,000 to 8,000 grassroots-level leaders from three to five Lok Sabha seats. The first convention of the leaders of Shakti Kendras (clusters of booth-level committees) will be held in Bengaluru.

Soon after, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a slew of political rallies in different parts of the State in February, sources said. However, the dates of the Prime Minister’s rallies are yet to be finalised.

The party has also asked six of its morchas — Yuva, Mahila, SC, ST, Raitha, and OBC — to hold separate conventions in different parts of the State from January 15 to reach out to different cross-sections of society ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, sources said.

Thursday’s meeting also discussed the need to strengthen booth-level committees. The meeting prepared a poll calendar of events for the State unit comprising 17 issues/events.

The BJP is set to take social media to the grassroots levels in terms of its application for election campaign.

The BJP State unit has been told by its central unit to constitute Lok Sabha-level committees comprising a social media in-charge person along with others such as a legal expert and a media in charge by December 31 to monitor preparations for the elections. The committee, among others, will also have political leaders.

Bengaluru, May 9: The Karnataka government may not extend the daily working hours from 8 to 12, with Labour Minister A Shivaram Hebbar saying on Saturday that the move would neither benefit the industries nor workers.

Hebbar said that the proposal has not been discussed and it may come for final deliberations next week. He also noted that some States have already extended the working hours. More than extending working hours, there should be employment to be given. If there are no jobs what can be done by extending working hours? If it is done (working hours extended to 12 hours), it would neither benefit workers nor industries. Let's see what happens, he said.

Asked if the government was in favour of the extension, he said, "I don't think it will be ready for the (12 hour) proposal." Meanwhile, the Minister also said that their top priority now was to see that all MSMEs start operating again, salaries are paid to employees and there are no job losses for any reason. If industries don't reopen, how can workers get their employment? We should think in parallel, Hebbar said adding, the government was keeping the interests of both MSMEs and workers in mind.

He urged the Centre to offer a relief package to the MSME sector, saying it is facing very difficult times due to the adverse impact of the COVID-19-induced lockdown, and also noting its role in generating large-scale employment and feeding large industries.

The BJP-led government has done whatever within its limitations to help the MSMEs, he said. Earlier this week, the Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa announced that the monthly fixed charges of electricity bills of MSMEs would be waived for two months. MSMEs have suffered huge production losses due to the lockdown. It takes some time for them to revive, Yediyurappa had said. The Chief Minister had also said payment of fixed charges in the electricity bills of the large industries will be deferred without penalty and interest for a period of two months.

The Karnataka BJP, which faced action on Twitter earlier this month over incendiary tweets, this time has passed the blame of Sangh Parivar sponsored Delhi violence to the victims.

In an insensitive tweet on Friday, it dubbed the protests against the notorious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as "fake" and added that the violence that followed was "the most well-planned assault on the Idea of India," in an apparent attempt to portray the victims as villains.

The handle, notorious for tweets targeting Muslims, blamed the clashes that erupted in Delhi between people demonstrating for and against the CAA on "so called 'Peacefuls'" - a known right-wing slur for Muslims.

Many people on social media called out the tweet for misleading people and covering up the role of Delhi BJP leader Kapil Mishra's provocative speech for triggering the violence or the failure of the Delhi Police, which reports to the former BJP chief and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in controlling the riots.

Earlier this month, the Karnataka BJP had tweeted a video of Muslim women standing in queue to vote in the Delhi elections, showing their voter ID cards, with the snarky caption: "Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during NPR (National Population Register) exercise."

Soon after, the party unit's Twitter handle was blocked by the social media platform for 24 hours after many accused it of encouraging Islamophobia.

NPR has been widely criticised by opposition parties as a precursor to the government's planned NRC or National Register of Citizens which intends to make Indians prove their citizenship with documents that many poor or illiterate do not possess.

Many fear that combined with the already imposed CAA - which promises citizenship to only non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh - the NRC can be used to make millions of Muslims stateless.

The government has denied the allegation and said the CAA only intends to help those who have faced religious persecution. In recent weeks, it has gone back on its rhetoric on the NRC which was announced by Amit Shah in parliament as "it will certainly happen".

The CAA, which was cleared by parliament in December, has triggered deadly protests in the country which left at least 25 dead till Sunday. Since then, at least 42 more people have been killed as large-scale violence erupted in northeast Delhi and hundreds of homes and shops have been burned to the ground.
