New scheme to provide regular income for Keralites returning from Gulf

Kasaragod, Jan 4: The Kerala State Cabinet has decided to recommend the Governor to promulgate an Ordinance amending the Kerala Pravasi Welfare Act to provide a regular income for non-resident Keralites (NoRKs) returning home from the Arabian Gulf and other part of the world.

The proposed scheme will enable the Kerala Pravasi Welfare Board to receive deposits from non-resident Malayalis and use it, along with a matching share from the government, to provide a monthly dividend for investors.

The amount collected through the scheme will be used to fund development activities taken up by KIIFB and other agencies.

The Cabinet also resolved to enhance the monthly remuneration for special Government pleaders to Rs. 1,20,000, senior government pleaders to Rs. 1,10,000 and that for government pleaders to Rs. 100,000.

Former Pro Vice Chancellor, University of Kerala, J. Prabhash will be appointed Special Officer of the Open University proposed to be set up under the Higher Education department.

Kasaragod, Jun 10: Indian Union Muslim League leader Metro Muhammad Haji passed away at a private hospital in Kozhikode today. He was 70.

He was a well known social and political activist in Kasaragod district. He has served in the social, cultural, philanthropic and educational fields.

He was the Executive Committee Member of the Muslim League. He also served as the Kerala State Vice President of the Sunni Youth Union, and President of the Kanhangad Samyukta Jamaat.

He is survived by his wife Zuhra and children Mujeeb, Jaleel, Shameem, Khaleel, Kabeer, Suhaila and Jusaila.

Mysuru, Jul 9: The renowned Mysore Palace has been closed on Thursday after a relative of an employee at the palace was tested COVID-19 positive, an official said.

The palace has been closed for the visitors in the view of rising COVID-19 cases. Authorities have decided to re-open the palace on Monday.

Earlier the Palace was closed for tourists for a week from March 15 to 22, in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, Mysore Palace committee said.

According to the Union Health Ministry, Karnataka has reported 28,877 COVID-19 positive cases including 16,531 active, 11,876 cured/discharged/migrated while 470 succumbed to the virus.

Mangaluru, Jan 17: A poultry truck transporting chickens overturned on Friday at Perne village near Uppinangady on Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway, killing 200 of them.

Police said that the truck was headed towards Mangaluru from Uppinangady when the truck driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to topple. As many as 200 chickens were killed in the mishap.

Another vehicle was later used to transport the remaining chickens.
