New scheme to provide regular income for Keralites returning from Gulf

Kasaragod, Jan 4: The Kerala State Cabinet has decided to recommend the Governor to promulgate an Ordinance amending the Kerala Pravasi Welfare Act to provide a regular income for non-resident Keralites (NoRKs) returning home from the Arabian Gulf and other part of the world.

The proposed scheme will enable the Kerala Pravasi Welfare Board to receive deposits from non-resident Malayalis and use it, along with a matching share from the government, to provide a monthly dividend for investors.

The amount collected through the scheme will be used to fund development activities taken up by KIIFB and other agencies.

The Cabinet also resolved to enhance the monthly remuneration for special Government pleaders to Rs. 1,20,000, senior government pleaders to Rs. 1,10,000 and that for government pleaders to Rs. 100,000.

Former Pro Vice Chancellor, University of Kerala, J. Prabhash will be appointed Special Officer of the Open University proposed to be set up under the Higher Education department.

Mangalore, Jun 3: One man was arrested by the Crime Branch of city police from Mangalore for allegedly having links with gangster Ravi Pujari, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Patil said on Wednesday.

According to the police, the man identified as Ghulam has been sent to 10-day police custody.

"During the investigation of a case related to Ravi Pujari, it was found that one Ghulam is a close associate of Pujari and had helped him in extortion and other illegal activity. Ghulam was arrested from Mangalore. He was produced before a court and sent to 10-day police custody," Patil said.

The senior police officer said that further investigation is on in the matter.

Pujari, who was wanted in several cases including ones related to heinous crimes like murder and extortion, was brought to Bengaluru earlier this year from Senegal. He had reportedly gone underground two decades ago and had allegedly been carrying out illegal activities from abroad.

Mangaluru, Jul 12: No decision has been taken regarding re-imposition of complete lockdown in Dakshina Kannada, according to district in charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary. 

The minister's clarification comes following social media rumours about complete lockdown in the district from July 14 to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Speaking to media persons, Mr Poojary said that chief minister will hold video conference with Deputy Commissioners, MPs and District ministers of the state on July 13 at 11 am. following which a decision will be taken. 

He also clarified that the government will not cause inconveniences to people by taking any such decision all of a sudden. "People should not pay heed to rumours," he said.

Bengaluru, May 8: Karnataka Minister for Primary and Secondary Education S Suresh Kumar on Friday said that the next academic year will have to be shortened as it will delayed due to the COVID-19.

Mr Kumar in a meeting with Education Department officials said that the syllabus and curriculum for the academic year will have to be designed according to time available. Additional content in the syllabus will have to be removed, according to a statement issued here by the education department here on Friday.

The Minister also stated that plans are underway to conduct CET examination meant for admission into professional courses immediately after the SSLC examination.

He also advised the officials to make the Department’s YouTube channel feature more subject-wise and chapter-wise content for the aid of the students.

Additionally, a booklet will be launched to teach students on how to adjust to life in the post-COVID-19 world.
