Mangaluru, Feb 27: Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath is supporting a group of environmentalists whose petition to the Forest Department has led to the stalling of work on the urban poor housing project at Padavu in Shaktinagar, according to his predecessor J R Lobo.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, the Congress leader and former MLA said he worked tirelessly to get the approval of the State and the Union governments for building 930 flats for the urban poor at a cost of Rs. 69.5 crore in the nine-acre government land in 2017.

“Having completed 75% of the work and after calling for tenders, environment groups raised objection that made the department keep on hold its permission to clear trees in the nine-acre deemed forest area.

The environmentalists raised objections at the instance of Mr. Kamath,” he said. Mr. Lobo said the project has been stalled since July 2018 and Mr. Kamath, who heads the taluk-level Ashraya Samiti, has not made any effort so far to get the project moving.

Mr. Lobo alleged that Mr. Kamath falsely blamed him during a review meeting, chaired by Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, recently.

Denying the charges, Mr. Kamath told media persons that he was making efforts to set right the faults in implementing the project.

He said the law clearly stated that the government land, where there are more than 50 trees, becomes a deemed forest.

“Despite knowing this fact, Mr. Lobo, who has served in various positions as a government servant, went ahead with the project in the deemed forest area without getting necessary clearance.”

When the issue about the project came up for discussion during the meeting of Mr. Kateel, Mr. Kamath said he pointed the legal issue. “I did not blame Mr. Lobo but pulled up officials for the folly.”

The MLA said based on his letter, Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer has written to the Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S. for grant of land in the name of MCC that will facilitate construction of flats.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Karnataka Forest Minister Anand Singh on Wednesday said that there was no criminal case filed directly against him.

When asked about PIL filed in the Karnataka High Court against him, Singh told media: "Some lawyer has filed a PIL against me in the High Court. I cannot stop anyone from filing the PIL."

"I have given my criminal record. There is no criminal case directly filed against me. My name is there in some cases but in 'others category'. We will see what happens," he said.

When asked about Congress leader Siddaramaiah's comments criticising him for being given the forest portfolio, Singh said: "I cannot comment on what he said against me as he is a former chief minister and very senior leader."

"Also the opposition always tries to make allegations against me. That is why he criticised me," he said.

Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Monday demanded that Forest Minister Anand Singh should either be expelled from the ministry or assigned a different portfolio.

A number of cases are pending against Singh including those registered under the Karnataka Forest Act.

Bengaluru, Jun 23: Karnataka Congress leader and Kanakapura MLA DK Shivakumar said on Monday that in the wake of coronavirus pandemic, people of his assembly constituency have taken a unanimous decision of remaining under voluntary lockdown until July 1.

The decision was taken after he headed a meeting at Kanakapura on Sunday, at the office of Kanakapura Municipality.

"Let us consider the situation after July 1, hold a similar meeting, and take the next decision. It has nothing to do with the state government's mandate. It came to the conclusion that this was a decision that we all voluntarily took," said DK Shivakumar.

DK Shivakumar informed that the merchants have agreed to sell groceries, fruits, vegetables, fennel, meat and other food items from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. only. District authorities, DCs, SPs and hospital representatives have decided the timings of clinics and drug stores.

He further said, "In this self-motivated lockdown, unnecessary driving should be avoided. The social gap must be maintained. No one should be oppressed by anyone."

Member of Parliament DK Suresh, Ravi - Ramanagara District Collector Archana, SP Anoop Shetty, and Kanakapura Planning Authority Chairman Jagannath were also present in the meeting.

Bengaluru, Jun 18: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah has accused the BJP-led government of not passing the benefit of the low price of crude to the common man and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps to bring down prices of petroleum products.

Hitting out at the BJP-led government, he termed it as "opportunistic" and said the price of petroleum products were being increased when people were facing difficulties due to COVID-19.

"It is very disheartening to witness and unprecedented opportunistic government which is trying to extract every pound and flesh from the common man, that too when the whole country is suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic. This is in the backdrop of the continuous price hike in the last 10 days," said the letter was written on Wednesday.

The Congress leader said that the policy decisions taken by the government "with respect to managing fuel sources are inconsistent with the prudent measures generally adopted".

"When the price of crude oil was remarkably low in March, April and May 2020, your government was very reluctant to pass on the benefits to the people by reducing the fuel prices proportionately, but, instead, your government continued to capitalise by increasing the excise duty," he said.

He said the government had also "failed" in the last six years to increase the oil storage capacity which could have been used for the country's advantage when the international crude oil price fell really low.

He said the government should roll back the excise duty and help in the reduction of fuel prices.

"The reduced burden will help the common man to have additional money in hand that will be spent on essential goods and services which will ultimately help them tide over these difficult times," he said.
