Mangalore, Mar 21: To ensure that all the eligible voters exercise their franchise and to create awareness on exercising franchise, under SVEEP (systematic voters education and electoral participation plan), a committee under the chairmanship of Zilla Panchayat CEO has been constituted in the district, said Deputy Commissioner N Prakash.

onlineSpeaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, he said that those who have been issued an election photo identity card can verify if their names are found on the voters' list by visiting the website of the Chief Election Officer, Bangalore, on www.ceokarnataka.kar.nic.in

Additional DC Dayanand said that using the EPIC ID card number, one can verify whether their names are found in the voters' list.

If there was no EPIC ID card number, then one can verify the  names by writing the name, father's name, and constituency name.

Taking note of several complaints from people that their names did not figure in the voters' list in the recently concluded elections to urban local bodies, the DC said mere possessing of EPIC is no guarantee that one can vote in elections. The final voters' list for Dakshina Kannada district has been published. “People have to verify if their names figure in the latest list.

Voters can also do so at the respective offices of the block level officer, village accountants, taluk offices, offices of the assistant commissioner and Mangalore City Corporation,” he added.

In case the names of voters missing from the list, people can get in touch with the respective offices and seek inclusion of their names using form 6 under the continuous updation of the voters' list.

The citizens can also register their name online in the chief election officer's website, he said and added that names can be included in the voters' list till the submission of nominations for the coming Assembly elections.

Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr K N Vijayaprakash said that awareness drive will be held across the districts. A campaign to motivate the citizens especially youth and women will be organised in the district. Handbills will be distributed in colleges, hostels, educational institutions, hospitals, malls, government offices, bus shelters to create awareness among the general public. Stickers with slogans on the need to exercise their franchise will be pasted on the buses and autorickshaws.

Theatres will be asked to show the slide on the need for exercising franchise and enrolling their names in the voters' list.

The DC said that as all the citizens can not visit the website to verify their names in the voters' list, a help desk will be started in every gram panchayat, TMCs, town panchayat, tahsildar's office and Mangalore City Corporation. The official in charge of the help desk will guide the citiznes.

Belagavi, Feb 24: Almost a month after a soldier was reported missing following a trip to Gokak's Godchinamalaki falls, his wife and her lover - who was her car driver - were arrested in Belagavi for his murder.

Police said the accused, Prashant Patil, and two friends tried to throw Deepak Pattanadara, 32, off a cliff after slitting his throat. Deepak's wife, Anjali, had registered a missing case with police on February 4, saying her husband had gone on a trip with friends on January 28 and hadn't returned.

In a twist, Deepak's elder brother lodged a complaint at the same police station, alleging that Anjali was behind the disappearance.

Anjali and Prashant, both 26, were arrested on Saturday while Prashant's two friends are absconding. Deepak's decomposed body has been recovered.

Deepak, who was posted in Delhi and was on the verge of retirement after 14 years in the army, had suspected his wife's alleged affair, police said. He'd bought a car for Anjali in 2019, and since he was home only twice a year, he hired Prashant as the driver. Anjali and Prashant grew close but when Deepak asked Anjali about the affair, she denied it outright.

When Deepak came home during vacation, the duo planned to eliminate him, police said.

New Delhi, Feb 12: Buoyed by the Aam Aadmi Party's stellar performance in the Delhi Assembly elections, the Maharashtra unit of the party has decided to fight all forthcoming local elections, including the Mumbai elections.

The AAP’s Bengaluru unit will also contest the municipal corporation polls likely to take place in August or September.

AAP National Executive Member Preeti Sharma Menon said the party will try to “replicate the Delhi model of pragmatism, performance, and people centric policies”.

“We are sure that Maharashtra will shower us with the same faith and love as Delhi has done so,” she said.

The party has decided to field candidates in all the 198 wards of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

"We have been planning to contest the BBMP election when we received a major shot in the arm. The Delhi victory happened because of the good work, which we want to replicate here," AAP's co-convener in Karnataka and party's BBMP campaign in charge Shanthala Damle told PTI on Tuesday.

Born out of an anti-corruption movement, the AAP led by Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal registered the second landslide victory by winning 63 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections.

According to Damle, AAP in Bengaluru was working in full swing to make its presence felt in the city. "The party has already done its ground workin terms of election campaign and reaching out to the people in Bengaluru," she added.

According to her, the party has already opened around 10 offices and about 50 people have been announced as the assembly president or ward president.

Last month, the party launched a 40-minute movie called 'Hosa Bengaluru' (New Bengaluru) and conducted 50 shows already.

"It shows the Delhi model and explains what can be done in Bengaluru. So that is part of our vision," the AAP leader said.

In its next level of the campaign, AAP intends to conduct 'Jana Samvada' (Dialogue with people) in every street and in every ward.

The preparedness of the party can be gauged from the fact that it has identified many of its candidates for the BBMP elections.

The party has never tasted success in Karnataka anywhere but the Delhi's success story has kindled a new hope as many people would now be waiting to join the AAP, Damle said. The AAP cadres in Bengaluru burst into celebration soon after it became clear that the party was going to script history by forming government for the third consecutive time since its inception.

Sporting their signature caps, party workers lit crackers, danced on the Delhi election song 'Lage Raho Kejriwal'.
