Mangaluru, Mar 28: Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, who seeking reelection on BJP ticket for the third consecutive term today rubbished the reports of secret pact with the Social Democratic Party of India as baseless rumours.

Congress leaders in the coastal district had recently claimed that SDPI fielded its candidate from Dakshina Kannada just to help BJP by dividing non-communal votes and thereby reducing the vote share of Congress in the next month’s Lok Sabha polls.

Replying to the queries of media persons on the sidelines of the BJP workers’ meet at Sullia, Mr Kateel said that Congress and SDPI leaders help each other. “BJP will not stoop to the level of reaching a secret deal with parties like SDPI. You can expect such politics from Congress leaders,” he said.

He said that during last year’s Karnataka Assembly polls Congress leaders had very easily convinced SDPI to withdraw the nominations.

“This time too Congress will convince SDPI candidate to withdraw nomination in Dakshina Kannada. Let them do whatever they want. We are least bothered. Because we are sure that BJP will register a thumping victory in Dakshina Kannada in this polls too,” he said.

Bengaluru, Mar 10: With concerns growing by the day, the Karnataka government is readying three more labs to test throat swab samples.

Currently, only two labs in Bengaluru — National Institute of Virology and Virus Research and Diagnostics Laboratory (VRDL) lab attached to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute — are categorised biosafety level 2+, a requirement for coronavirus tests.

Now, the government is working on upgrading three more labs, one each in the government medical colleges at Hassan, Mysuru and Shivamogga. “The labs will be ready within one week,” the authorities said.

Currently, the labs are testing only throat swab samples of suspected patients and taking 24 hours to give the results. “A patient’s blood sample will be collected only if he or she tests positive for covid-19 infection in the first throat swab sample.

While earlier the state would send all samples of suspected coronavirus cases to NIV, Pune, the two labs were upgraded to biosafety level 2+ in mid-February.

Kasaragod, Mar 21: The lack of self-restraint and social distancing by people here, the ones who come from the Middle East regions, in particular, has been a cause of concern for the district authorities who have time and again been reiterating the need to follow tips from health authorities to counter the spread of Novel Coronavirus.

But as things are feared to go out of control, the district authorities including the Collector Dr. Sajith Babu have come out to the streets and bazaars only to impose social distancing instructions now in place in the district strictly since six more persons have been tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday.

According to health authorities, the new cases were caused by a few people who recently returned from abroad and who did not follow the self-quarantine measures.
