Mangaluru, May 23: As predicted by several BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sitting MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has not only achieved a hat-trick but also improved his performance in 2019 Lok Sabha polls leaving Congress in shock.

When Mr Kateel had registered his second consecutive victory against Congress veteran B Janaradhana Poojary in 2014 general elections, the former had achieved the highest victory margin (1,43,709 votes) since Independence in Dakshina Kannada. This time Mr Kateel broke his own record and defeated his nearest rival Mithun Rai of Congress by a margin of around two lakh and a half lakh votes.

In the first-ever elections in 1951, the district was part of the South Kanara South constituency. It came to be known as Mangalore in the 1957 Lok Sabha polls and as Dakshina Kannada after delimitation of constituencies in 2008.

A qualitative assessment of the victory margin, however, reveals that the most convincing triumph in the constituency was recorded by K.K. Shetty (Congress) over C.M. Poonacha (Congress-O) in 1971.

Though the victory margin was 1.21 lakh — about 22,000 votes less than what Mr. Kateel secured — it appears to be qualitatively better.

Of the 3.18 lakh votes polled, Mr. Shetty had bagged 2.06 lakh votes compared to his rival’s tally of 84,286. Thus, he polled nearly two-and-half times (2.44 times to be precise) more votes than Mr. Poonacha.

Bengaluru, Feb 23: Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers DV Sadananda Gowda on Sunday said that several "anti-national organisations" were misusing the platform of anti-CAA protests.

"We have taken serious note of it and have started an investigation. Several anti-national organisations are misusing the platform of anti-CAA protests and many people are trying to take political advantage of this situation," he told the media on Sunday.

Gowda said that the government is "very serious" about the issue. "We are already working towards this. Both the state and Centre are together investigating into this," he said and added, "We will ensure that we cut this and will not allow this to grow. We will investigate the organisers of the event as well."

"If you are inviting such people (alleged anti-national elements), it means that you either know about it or that you are indirectly encouraging such things. In such situations, the organisers too will be acted upon," he stressed.

Kasaragod, May 25: An autorickshaw driver from Belur in Kasaragod was admitted for surgery to a hospital after being hit on the head by a falling jackfruit. He was tested positive for the coronavirus. It is not clear how he contracted the viral infection.

“While he was trying to pluck a jackfruit off a tree, one of them fell on him, injuring his spine. His hands and legs were weakened too. His condition required surgery. Our protocol dictates that we subject everyone who require immediate surgery to the covid test, just to be sure. That’s when he tested positive,” said Dr K Sudeep, superintendent of the Pariyaram Medical College in Kannur.

“He had symptoms of Covid-19. But he has no recent travel history or contact with any infected person. We’re not sure if he got it through one of his passengers in the rickshaw. He had visited the district hospital once so he could have got it from there. Anyway, we are examining it and preparing the route maps,” he added.

His family will be quarantined and health workers have begun to trace his immediate primary contacts.

Though there have been a number of cases in Kerala where a person’s source of infection could not be correctly ascertained, such people have gone on to recover without spreading the infection to others.

The Kerala government is conducting testing of high-risk persons on the frontlines, such as police officials, grocery vendors and health workers, as part of its sentinel surveillance programme, but maintains that there’s little evidence of a community spread in the state.
